Bengals take Nevada QB Rowe in fifth round

The Bengals used the 151st overall pick on Nevada quarterback Jeff Rowe. He started all 12 games last season the Wolfpack in 2006 and was 172-for-266 passing for 1,907 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was the MVP of the East-West Shrine Game after throwing two touchdowns.

He is 6-5 1/4, 226 pounds and is knocked for being too thin.

The Bengals have only two quarterbacks under contract, starter Carson Palmer and backup Doug Johnson. The Bengals also had given a workout to free agent veteran Tim Rattay and had a visit last week from Koy Detmer.

The Bengals passed on Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Troy Smith of Ohio State and Jordan Palmer (Carson's younger brother) of Texas El-Paso.

Coach Marvin Lewis said the pick will preclude the Bengals signing either Rattay or Detmer and should provide the team with some future stability.

Lewis indicated Johnson will be the top backup to Palmer.

"This is a great prospect, a good fit for us at this point," Lewis said.

I don't quite get it, there are a couple linebackers out there right now that could fill backup rolls? This QB would be around in the 6th or 7th rounds. And if not someone else that is as good would be there. Bad pick.
Missed filling a roll at linebacker and picked up a maybe 3rd string QB that 2 years ago was wasn't good enough to play at a low level college.

I'm not sure who's in charge at the bengals, but a QB? I'm sure it's a lot cheaper to get a backup QB for 5th round money than to sign an experienced backup like Detmer or Rattay. They better use some of that left over money to sign some defensive free agents. If the defense doesn't show improvement this year with their lackluster desire to improve it, Marvin should go. Wait, I mean Mike Brown.

If this defense is so good that they can go after backups for their offense, we are all stupid. All I can say is, if the defense is not improved after this coming season, heads should role.

that was a wasted pick if i had the choice i would have taken troy smith or another defensive back/safety/corner back

The Bengals 2nd and 5th round picks pretty much confirm that Odell Thurman will be back with the team this coming season.

Ugh. I liked the Irons pick, as I said, but this one is suspect. I suppose, from a salary-cap standpoint, it makes sense. We don't have to waste $1M on a thirty-something do nothing third-stringer like Rattay or Detmer. If that frees up room to sign Hartwell, AND he can stay healthy (that's a big 'if'), then this pick makes some sense. But, couldn't we get a quality QB prospect in Rounds 6 or 7? If you go offense, isn't a current second-string TE more important than a hypothetical future backup at QB? And that doesn't even begin to mention the issues on defense.

To sum up, I still like Irons, and I can live with this one, but it's suspect. Maybe Marvin knows something about Odell that we don't know.

Okay, that's TWO projected backups today--on OFFENSE!!!

Is Lewis THAT secure about our defense? Is he THAT negative about the remaining defensive player? If they're THAT bad, why is everybody else wasting picks on them?

I'm losing confidence in Lewis's drafting ability. (And never had any in the front office.)

Worst Bengals draft ever.

This looks like the worst draft I've seen of the marvin era. 2 back up offensive players - when we don't have a quality back up TE or any experience at S (or LB, really). This just reeks. Watch us draft a P in the 6th round.

As a Wolfpack fan, I would suggest that Rowe will work out well for you. He is a great young man who will not embarrass you, and he is a winner.

I'm willing to give the Bengals the benefit of the doubt here.

I'm sure that they had a reason for taking Rowe this high and felt like he was a good fit. They do afterall need a solid back-up to Carson. A new back-up every other year is not ideal by any means.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that Odell Thurman will be back in the mix next season, which would also help explain their rb and qb picks.

I'm sure Rowe and Irons are good picks, just not for THIS Bengals team.

And I agree that this suggests Thurman isn't as much "not a part of this team" as Lewis keeps telling the media.

Which, if true, would be ONLY good news of this draft since the 1st round.

You are all not getting it. Yes he is cheaper but the Bengals need a backup like Rattay or Detmer who have started in the NFL before, who could be ready to play if Palmer goes down. This kid wont be ready for that for another couple years. This was a waste. Marvin sucks.

Jeff Rowe Bodine? He or any other QB is a total waste in the 5th. Burn a 7th on a QB if Mike Brown is too cheap to pay Rattay, not a 5th. Several decent TE and WR prospects on the board that actually might play in 2007. Or better yet a defender.

QB was not a smart pick at this point and passing over Troy Smith made it that much more ridiculous...

Yes, it's a horrible draft because we all know better than the front office, the assistants, the head coach. Come on, they DO know what they're doing! I may not like the picks, you may not like the picks, but that's their plan. A 5th/6th/7th round defender won't improve your defense next year. More than anything, this drafts just answers some questions- Chris Perry's injury is VERY serious, Odell is going to be given a serious chance to rejoin this team, and Ed Hartwell will be signed. As for Rowe, we DO need a QB, 5-6-7 rounders are damn near interchangable anyway, they wanted him, didn't think he'd be there later and didn't like any other qbs left. Knee-jerk reactions, 2003 draft looked like an absolute coup with 4 projected 1st rounders drafted with Palmer, Steinbach, Washington, and Weathersby. Well Palmer is great, Steinbach was great but is now gone, and the other two did very little besides make stupid gestures after first-down grabs. Give this draft time before we say it sucks.

If Palmer reinjures his knee, then everyone would have been crying how we didn't take a QB high enough in the draft to back him up. I love all the armchair GM's out here....

Do you honestly think that this rookie project of a QB is going to replace carson if he gets hurt? Johnson is #2. That's why we needed a veteran QB who had some experience and didnt need 2 years of grooming.

Passing on Brady Quinn will haunt the Bengals for 20 years. Assuming Palmer is going to be healthy for years to come is too risky. ZERO depth and quality at QB now and we coulda had Quinn. ARGH! Quinn is going to prove to be one of he best ever. And Browns fans won't ever let us forget it!

Hey the Irons pick I like. The QB was a waste. And for the guys that wanted the Bengals to pick Quinn, that would be more of a waste.
But Irons will be good, Rudi is getting old in running back years and the Bengals are planning ahead. Good Pick on Irons, bad pick on the QB.
