Browns play to win with trade

Congratulations to Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage for having the guts to make the trade to get the 22nd overall pick and select quarterback Brady Quinn. Some experts thought the Browns would have taken Quinn at No. 3 overall.

The Browns made a great pick at No. 3 overall to get Wisconsin left offensive tackle Joe Thomas. The Browns now have potential for an outstanding left side of their offensive line, with former Bengals left guard Eric Steinbach lining up next to Thomas.

Cleveland gave up its second-round pick this year and its first-round pick in the 2008 to get the 22nd overall pick from Dallas.

Whoever's at quarterback -- Charlie Frye or Quinn -- he will have greater protection when he passes. And new featured tailback Jamal Lewis will be running behind a significantly better offensive line.

I still can't believe the Bengals let Steinbach go. Absolutely horrible decision, in my view. You spend years and millions building a dominant offensive line, then drop your guard for a second and WHAM.

Now the Browns benefit from the Bengals' hard work and coaching and development, and the Bengals have a question mark lining up next to a tackle who, let's face it, is also somewhat of a question mark at this point.

Meanwhile they're spending how many millions to keep a so-so defensive end in Justin Smith? This makes sense how, exactly?

What a shame. After courting him as their top pick, Cleveland kicked him aside until they could get him ON THE CHEAP.

Cleveland will spin this and say they needed the proper linemen to protect him. But NOBODY projected Quinn as a second rounder. Cleveland got lucky.

Ironically, getting Quinn cost the team some picks. Which means the franchise's expense for taking Quinn will go somewhere OTHER than Quinn's wallet. (I wonder how that will make him feel on paydays...)

are you a browns fan? seem a little hard on bengals draft, when irons was rated better than the next def players. true, the jets traded up and probably got our draft...but like marvin said not much room to trade when they need to use draft picks to stock team.

id have rather seen bengals trade down some (if they could have) and still gotten a def player in rd 1 then add a 3rd....then use 3rd to trade back up higher in 2nd. but that is too much maneuvering for bengals front office.

back to your browns....they gave up a lot to get quinn. they will still likely have top ten pick next year. if quinn turns out to be next kyle boller, uh oh. we will see. but bold does not always mean great.

and if irons is the next emmitt smith? then what will you write? too early to make strong judgment statements on draft.

Leprachaun looking boy should have been a second day pick. Cleveland was the only team that even wanted the over-rated QB. Whatever they pay, it's money down the drain for a QB that's all hype.
