Lewis defends second-round pick Irons

While discussing fourth-round pick Marvin White, the TCU safety, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis went back to Saturday to discuss second-round running back Kenny Irons.

"We would have liked to have picked a defensive player (in the second round)," Lewis said. "The value was a little later. Kenny was the best pick for us. He has the chance to be there on opening day."

Lewis also was asked today whether Cleveland general manager Phil Savage called about trading to get quarterback Brady Quinn.

"What would have been more fun was to call Tom Condon (Quinn's agent) and tell him we were going to draft Brady and play him behind Carson Palmer," Lewis said.

TE Ben Patrick might be nice addition if he's still available for the Bengals in round 5. Kiper just said that he could have been a round 2 level pick.

Mark: I think you do a terrific job. But I have to disagree with you on Irons. Excellent pick in an area of intense, underpublicized need.

The Bengals only have one feature back. If Rudi got injured -- which can happen at any moment with a older back especially -- they would have no one who could carry the load full-time.

I also think the lack of a speed back has allowed other teams (Steelers, Ravens) to play base defenses to third down especially.

We are just going to have to disagree on this.

What does that mean? "He has a chance to be there on opening day." That's quite flattering for a 2nd round pick, Marvin. I don't think any argument flies in favor of taking Irons. What happens if Palmer gets hurt? Do we take a QB on the 1st day as insurance? Obviously not. You can't just assume Perry won't be back. He broke his leg, didn't tear his ACL. Someone remind coach the Bengals aren't in position to make luxury picks. We've been to the playoffs once since 1991, something a lot of people seem to forget.

No need to defend, Marvin. Irons was a good pick. Would they have liked to get an impact defensive player? Sure; but there were none there. Yes, they could've reached for an LB or DE but, I think, the players they were targeting were picked just before (the michigan pair, among others). Overall draft - excellent.
