Second round pick is Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn

The Bengals drafted another Auburn running back, Kenny Irons, who rushed for 893 yards and four touchdowns in 2006. There are durability concerns for the 5-10 1/2, 203-pound tailback.

"It gives us a chance not knowing Chris's situation," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in reference to Chris Perry. The former first-round running back is not expected to be ready for the start of training camp because of a serious ankle and fibula injury.

Asked why the Bengals didn't make a trade -- 13 trades were made through the first 48 picks; the Bengals picked Irons at No. 49 -- Lewis said, "We didn't have the firepower to do that without a third-round pick."

The Bengals didn't have a third-round pick because they used it in the supplemental draft in July on linebacker Ahmad Brooks.

Bengals running backs coach Jim Anderson said Irons reminds him of another Auburn running back, James Brooks. "In this league today, you need more than one back," Anderson said. "We think we made an excellent pick."

Anderson said Irons has some of the same qualities as Perry -- he can make people miss in the open field, catch the ball and run in traffic through arm tackles.

Said offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, "You look at this as another weapon. He gives us a change of style at running back. We hopefully can improve our long runs, 15- and 20-yard runs."

I just don't get it. Why?

Good pick here. Good value, big upside and extend Rudi's career a little longer...

If Rudi goes down, who do you have to count on? Kenny Watson? Good special teams guy, not a huge offensive factor. Perry wont be ready for camp and is coming off of a serious injury for a slashing back.

Center ryan khalil from SC would have been a great fit. Guicheck sucks, stepanovich is a send off from the worst OL in the league.

WHY??????????
Does anyone besides me realize that we need DEFENSE. Let me be the first one to call for the firing of Marvin Lewis

i am struggling to understand this pick. bengals have no depth at safety or linebacker, our d-tackles are close to collecting social security. does that mean that they are giving up on a 1st round pick from just a few years ago. that was a suspect pick and so is this. i hope i am wrong.

We are due for a winner at running back after Ka Jana and Perry busts. Hopefully Irons will work out.

Apparently, Lewis did not think the remaining defensive players were worth a middle-2nd round pick. I find that hard to believe.

It's true that Perry is likely a bust (due to injuries). But he's a backup, and Lewis just used a 2nd round pick on a projected backup--when anyone can see that our problem on offense is our LINE. Every starter missed critical time. If our line had remained healthy last year, we'd have won 12 games, Perry or no Perry.

I hope Kenny Irons can play defense...

Both picks were excellent. I think they were prepared to take Woodley. However, he was gone by the time they picked. They were very lucky to get Hall. Very few thought he would be available at that spot. Good work Bengals.

sfmdpThis is a do-over of the Chris Perry / Keiwan Ratliff draft. I think it proves how bad those picks were. Hind site in the draft is always 20/20, but if this team would have drafted Chris Gamble and Julius Lones, or Michael Turner in the second round that year, then they could have improved the defense in other areas this year, instead of having to replace bad picks. Perry and Ratliff won't be on this team next year. The Bengal's recent histort of early round picks is suspect. We all love David Pollack but it's not like he was anywhere near a pro bowl. Palmer, Williams, Whitwoth, Joseph, are solid early round picks. But there are a lot of misses out there as well. I think that the Bengals internal player rating system is a little questionable at this point. Maybe if they would have held on to De De Dorsey, they could have used this second pick on defense. And if the pick was offense then I liked Kalil at center. One outside linebacxker to watch for in the fourth is Quincy Black out of New Mexico. He is a fast outside linebacker.

Worst pick since Marvelous Marv wasted a first-round selection on Chris Perry. Does he ever watch game film? Does he not get how bad this defense is? Backup running backs are a dime a dozen. You can get one off the waiver wire. Back to oblivion Bungle fans.

We got a good first round pick, the second, well we do need a faster break away threat running back, maybe in the next rounds we can get some offensive line help and defensive backs

I've said this about a billion times and I think this pick proves it. Rudi Johnson is not a very good fit for this offense. (and I luv Rudi, he is a great person) He is a one dimensional type runner on an explosive offense. The Bengals very badly needed a multidimensional threat at RB who can run to the outside and be a threat in the receiving game. (I wish Chris Perry would have been healthy but he isn't and we need to move on) I think this pick was a good pick. I think Irons will be real good and be a bigger part of this offense than you think!!

Horrible, horrible pick. We need defense, not offense. Yeah, Perry is hurt, nothing new there, has been his whole career and the offense has still dominated. Why not go for Tank Tyler who was still available or any other friggin player on defense. At least if you're going to blow the pick on a RB, why not Pittman from OSU. We took a guy with a 4.55 40 when there was a guy with a 4.40 sitting there. HORRIBLE PICK

Maybe Kenny Irons can play left field for the Reds too.

I think the Bengals were poised to pick either Zach Miller, Woodley, Houston, Branch or Durant with this pick and they were all off the board. Specifically Durant, a LB in the Marvin mold, taken by JAX in the pick right before us. If you look at the rest of the second and third rounds only 3 LBs were taken and they all had big negatives and were all selected in the 3rd and the Bengals would have been reaching with any of them in the 2nd round. Irons is a solid pick in the second round and will solidify RB esp. with Perry hurting.

I believe this pick brings the Bengals offense where it was at year before last. Irons, IMO, will recieve alot of passes out of the back field as Perry did when he was healthy.
I think that the Bengals were set at either picking LB Harris Mich, until J-E-T-S ruined that pick, or DE Woodley MICH,and JAX had the same idea a pick earlier.
I credit the coaching staff for not settling for a defensive player that didn't have the talent level to be selected at the 49th. I also credit the Bengals staff for noticing the drop of in the offensive game after Perry went down year before last. Lewis is in a no win situation with alot of fans. Sure I would have loved to trade up or get lucky and land another defensive stud. But that is how the draft goes.

Can Kenny Irons play left field for the Reds??? Cause Adam Dunn is terrible. And can Wayne Krivsky take over the draft for the Bengals. He seems to be the only person in this town who makes moves for a need.

Lets pretend Cincinnati is not a "Scarlet and Gray" town who would love nothing more than to see any Wolverine fall flat on his face. However having spent my first twenty years there, I know there are a lot more Ted Ginn Jr's and Dwayne Jarretts in the NFL than at UM. Is this to say that Dexter Jackson will show up 10 lbs. lighter as he prepares a return to his Superbowl form, when he appears out of nowhere at the precise moment to erase the burn marks from Hall's Jersey??? And to say that Perry, in the first round of another draft that thirst for defensive help, was a bad move; Is almost like taking a running back in round two when several round one defensive hopefuls are still there! (Oh thats the same thing. Isn't it?) Someone had to start the run on defenders. Right?

hello. i like the bengals. they are my favorite team. do you like them?

at 4/29/2007 8:06 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

My sources tell me that the Bengals
plan to put about 30 lbs. on Irons and have him do double duty at the LB and safety positions

Mark,
What are the fourth and fifth round areas we can expect? We need a LB, S and maybe a WR who can also return kicks. Are there any really good return specialists out there?

Seeing the way they've drafted, I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft a QB, since we need one of those like we need a RB.

This smells of Mike Brown intervention

If the Bengals would have picked RB Pitman. We wouldn't hear nothing but praise out of the selection. Geez, people this is the NFL, not college. Ohio State's players don't translate good NFL players anyways. I'd much rather have Michigan, Auburn, Fla., FSU, USC players anyday.

Kenny Irons is a good pick beause so many times the offense failed on third down and put the defense back on the field. Perry was picked to be the change of pace, a James Brooks type player but he's hurt and Irons will take over that roll. A healthy Adams and the addition of Myers who is a good experienced lineman, will improve the D-line.

You people are crazy if you think Pittman is better than Kenny Irons. Do half of you even watch college football?? Irons is explosive and can be a major threat in this offense. He will be a receiving threat too, something Pittman NEVER was. Irons may have run a 4.55 but he has run in the 4.4's before and plays fast. He is a 1st round talent. And obviously, they didn't see anyone on the defensive side that was a better value than him - get over it!

7 games in which they scored 20 points or less......

7 games in which they gave up 20 points or less......

5 games in which they lost by 7 points or less....

I like the pick.... Tells me Perry is not going to be ready for camp (if at all).....

I also like the 4th pick....

Horrible pick. Unless he can pitch the 8th inning for the reds or play nickel back or safety. Why pick a guy who at best will play about 10 - 20 % of offensive snaps when you can still get a STARTER for the 30th ranked D that would hopefully play 100% of D snaps. If no D players were the right 'value' pick, then for god's sake trade the pick, move down, and get ANYTHING, another 5th or 6th round pick, for moving down a little, as long as you get somebody that can improve the D on the 1st day of the draft. jeez.

at 4/29/2007 3:40 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Please tell me what person the Bengals could have picked instead of Irons that would be a starter on D? This was not a good draft for defensive players, period - end of story. I think most of the players on D in this draft are garbage.

mikey loves being 8-8. a mediocre defense ensures that. it can now be said that the bungles have yet to improve the "d".
