Let the Bengals pick again

The Bengals are about 20 minutes away from making their fourth-round pick.

In the light of day, the selection of running back Kenny Irons looks like a bad pick. He might very well be an excellent pro, but the Bengals need defense, defense and more defense.

That said, don't be surprised if the Bengals use one of their first two Day 2 picks today on a tight end.

So are we going QB and WR the next two picks? I figure we are trying to just add depth to positions we don't need in this draft. We don't need defense because we are just going to re-sign our own guys... oh wait...

Mark,

I frequently agree with your assessments, but I have to disagree with you on the Irons pick. You simply can't succeed consistently in the NFL with only one running back. The Bengals were really lucky last year because Rudi is so durable. Nevertheless, the shelf-life of a running back is short in this league, and Rudi has amassed a lot of carries over the past four seasons. We really do need a second guy.

Sure, perhaps from a 'need' standpoint, safety or linebacker, or even tight end, may have been a higher priority. But the Bengals' draft philosophy under Marvin is: draft the best player available. In today's salary-capped NFL, picking guys that will develop and stay on your roster is a must. The quickest way to screw that up is to reach for somebody. The Bengals couldn't trade up to get a better defender, and they filled a pressing need.

Irons should prove to be a valuable player. With the White pick, we have a replacement for Kevin K. and another special teams guy. We can find quality depth for the front seven and tight end later in the draft now.

I have no problem with picking a Rb in the 2nd...it's the RB they actually took I have a bit of a problem with.

Injury prone, under-sized back with no significant receiving experience...not really an ideal compliment to Rudi.

That said he's talented and may fit the bill - just wonder if they could've gotten someone later on and picked up a better player in the 2nd.

I do agree the Bengals' need a true #2 guy and cannot rely on Perry at this point.
