Best of Alexander debate

To the minute, 39 readers have posted comments on the question of whether the Bengals should try to sign tailback Shaun Alexander, released April 22 by Seattle.

Here are some of the best comments from readers: (Thanks for the input.)

-- The affirmative.
Offer him a short term deal. Make it insentive based. That way he gets paid well if he earns it. It would be nice, but I don't want us having an anchor around our neck if he doesn't have any game left. -- ewad

-- The neutral.
Would he be the next Ken Griffey Jr. Really good in Seattle and average in Cincy? -- Bengal43

-- The negative.
Signing Alexander would be ridiculous. He's done. These running backs just lose a step and we shouldn't be the ones to overpay him to linger a few more years in the NFL. Great guy...but he shouldn't be in our backfield. We already have a guy on the decline (Rudi J). -- WhoDeyNYC

Well... Jamal Lewis was on the decline and see what he's done for the Browns. I say give him a year's deal and if he pans out extend it.

If you bring in Alexander you would have to cut somebody. Usually the Bengals carry 3 RB's. If you tried to carry 4 I think the team would take it out of the WR or LB pool wouldn't they? I tried to find out what Rudi's cap hit would be if you cut him this year and the only thing I could find was around 7 million. I suppose if you waited until after 6/1 you could spread it into 2009. Mark do you have the info on Rudi's cap hit. I have a hard time believing you would want to cut Watson or Dorsey as they both are special teamers to carry a couple backs neither of whom play special teams. Do the Bengals even have any money to spend, I thought they were pretty hamstrung unless they restructured a couple deals and I don't think it would make sense to do that in order to sign a 30 year old RB that just got cut.

If you cut Rudi Johnson, it saves $3 million and does not cost us anything. That's why it's been discussed much in the past.

Hey Mark,

How about the stability that a shaun alexander would bring to the locker room. He might not bring the burst of speed but the intangibles such as leadership have to make him more valuable.

It's not like Alexander is in a position to demand a huge salary. Ideally, he signs a contract with heavy performance incentives and proceeds to put up numbers. Roster spots should be determined by competition. If Alexander comes in and beats out any of the (other than Rudi) journeyman RBs already on the roster then more power to him.

Could we not put Irons on the PUP list? Wouldn't that make room for another RB?
