2003 Anderson High School graduate Chris Norwell, a defensive lineman from Illinois, signed a rookie free agent contract with the New England Patriots. Norwell went undrafted, but said he had heard from the Patriots in the weeks leading up to the draft that they liked him as a free agent. "It feels good to finally know where I'm going," said Norwell, who signed the contract Sunday night, about three hours after the last draft pick was made. "My family is very excited for me." He said he first talked to a New England scout at the Illini Pro Day, when he and several of his college teammates worked out for NFL scouts at the school's Champaign, Illinois campus. Norwell was a four-year starter at defensive tackle for the Illini, but will try to earn a spot as a 3-4 defensive end with New England. "It's a good opportunity for me," he said. "They already have a great defensive line. I am going to learn from the best." According to the team's website, the Patriots had five defensive ends under contract as of Sunday night. That could change, as a flurry of deals were being made in the hours and days after the draft. The Patriots' starting defensive end positions are currently held by two veterans, Richard Seymour and Ty Warren.
Norwell said he drew interest from the New York Jets, San Diego Chargers, and Baltimore Ravens, among other teams. He had little difficulty making his decision. "I signed with New England pretty quickly," said the 6'6", 315-pound lineman. Vince Suriano, who coached Norwell at Anderson, was very happy to see one of his former players sign with an NFL team. "I think it's absolutely tremendous," said Suriano, now the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at The College of Mt. St. Joseph. "He is the first player I've coached to sign an NFL contract. I am thrilled and excited for him. I think it's a great opportunity." Norwell, who is represented by Cincinnati-based agent Richard Katz, signed a three-year rookie contract. He will report to the Patriots rookie minicamp on Thursday, May 1.
also as free agent signings the Benglas signed Anthony Hoke and Bradley Glathaar of UC. That's 3 bearcats for this year.
In related news the Bengals are changing their name to UC South-campus.
