Crystal (foot)ball

With Michigan offensive left tackle Jake Long agreeing to terms Tuesday with Miami, making him the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the Bengals are now expected to pick one from the following players at No. 9:

Ryan Clady, Boise State offensive left tackle

Sedrick Ellis, Southern Cal defensive tackle

Derrick Harvey, Florida defensive end

Chris Long, Virginia defensive end

Leodis McKelvin, Troy cornerback

Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois running back

Keith Rivers, Southern Cal linebacker

Jonathan Stewart, Oregon running back

How can we NOT pick up Sedrick Ellis. As all the experts say, it all starts up front, the battle is won or lost on the line. A monster DT is a great start to winning that battle. A good Defensive line makes everybody else play better.

I would think Ellis will be gone by the time the Bengals pick . . . they trade up! I think there are other teams interested in Ellis (NO for one) who would be willing to trade up to get him. It's disappointing to me that they probably won't consider trading up. Sigh . . .

I can't even fathom Jonathan Stewart being in this mix.

My order of preference (assuming I could pick any): Chris Long, Sedrick Ellis, Keith Rivers, Ryan Clady. The others, are not acceptable No. 9 picks.

Every mock draft I have seen has Ellis to the Bengals at nine. Look, we all agree that Jake Long, Dorsey, Ryan, McFadden, Gholston and C. Long will be gone before the Bengals pick. That only leaves 2 other picks before the Bengals. Most "experts" have Leodis McKelvin going in the top 8 as well. My guess is if Ellis does go before the Bengals pick they will take Keith Rivers.

If Ellis is there at #9, its a no brainer but they can't move up to get him, they need the picks. Wait at #9 and take Rivers or McKelvin.

I have read that the Bengals, at some point in the draft, may consider looking at RB's. Which brings me to ask, what is the deal with Kenny Irons? Mark has stated that they are not counting on him this season. Does this mean he is still too hurt? If so, how bad? And he is out of their plans for good?

On the trade rumors et al (kinda on topic).
Here's how it goes around here:
1. Mortenson or Profootballtalk.com report it.
2. BenGAL's front office, players and coach (with that stupid condescending smirk in tow) all deny it vehemently.
3. Story gets out, can't be contained by MB and co.
4. BenGALs finally acknowledge, but usually tell different version.
5. Truth finally comes out- (see item #1)

What did the local media or the BenGALs do to Mort to make him have such a jones for the GALs? He is killing the local media when it comes to scoops which makes me wonder how a guy in Bristol CT can know more than our guys who are here, in BenGAL offices, talking to GAL players. coaches, staff. Is the local media simply mouth pieces for the GALs? Seriously, I have implored who dey heads for years now to read other NFL team coverage in other cities and see what it means to have your team covered. These issues with Chad and the gang have been there for a while and Mark and Doc were not eager to report them when times were good (2005) for fear of a massive who dey head backlash.
Who Dey Heads listen up- let MArk and company report, the good, bad and ugly or your team will always suck. They are the fans' watchdog and the team's checks and balances, let them do their jobs, even in the midst of a good season should one ever take place here.

Clady, Mendenhall, Rivers, and Stewart are reaches at #9. Chris Long will likely be "Long" gone. That leaves, in my order of preference, Ellis, McKelvin, and Harvey. I do hope that they get Ellis, but I don't think that they should trade up to get him. McKelvin is the return man that the Bengals have been needing for a long time, and he would make Deltha expendable, so that would not make me unhappy either. They don't really need Harvey with Geathers and Odom both locked up, so maybe Branden Albert makes more sense than Harvey here, with Willie aging and Stacy Andrews unwilling to sign a long-term deal.

Hey Who Dey Head Hunter, As long as Curnutte and the other "reporters" don't care that they are being lied to, they aren't going to dig into stories. They want to call what happened at the press conference "confusion", so be it. If it was my job to cover a team and the team spokesman lied to me, I might take that personally and try to do something about it. Maybe someday they will learn they don't have to cover for the team and can actually cover the team.

Unless the Bengals get some ridiculous offer on draft day to move up or down with more picks. They will wait until after June 1st to deal Chad. I would like to get Roy Williams in here possibly. TJ is not TJ without Chad. I hope I am wrong, but we need someone to spread the field and I am not counting on Antonio Chatman...

lets assume we were able to trade chad for a first and a second round pick and make the needable cap space, take ellis with 9, take mendenhall with the other 1st round pick, take hardy with the first 2nd round pick, take the next best dlineman with the other 2nd, with our third round picks take a center and a guard. trade andrews to philly for their 2nd round pick take mayo from tn that would free up alot of cap space i know i am not living in the real world but nice thoughts

I don't know why nobody ever brings this up, but If they want to trade Chad but don't want to absorb the salary cap hit of $8M by doing it now instead of June, Why don't they make the trade now for 'a player to be named later' and in June they name him. That way they agree to splitting the cap hit and they are able to pick up the draft selections beginning this year.
That said I would let him sit just like they are doing.
As far as the draft "How can we NOT pick up Sedrick Ellis" duh because he will be gone. If he's there he's your guy. If not then the rest of the list becomes valid. I hope they don't take the Oklahoma WR with any pick. LB's Mayo or Rivers would be much more acceptable.

I still like a draft of Ellis in 1, Manningham in rd 2. G/OL in 3 or 3a, C in 3a or 4. Then work on LB's.

If Ellis gone, Rivers in rd 1. Get a DL (Campbell or Jackson) in rd 2, WR in 3.

The name Dre Moore fascinates me for some reason - I hope he is around at 3a.

Ellis and Moore on the D line, new WR, some OL help. Sweet.

What the Bengals should do but end-up doing, rarely makes sense. The Defensive line is what they should address but with Mike Brown having the final say, nothing surprises me. An awful front office.

Per Chad: trade him to the "skins! Cap hit or not, it's a no-brainer. In other words, we won't do it because it makes way too much sense.

Accepting the Redskin's offer should have been a no-brainer. You shed the team of a malcontent who, assuming the best-case scenario that he plays, will never go over the middle again for you in Cincinnati, will never block if he is not the primary WR, and is on the back-nine of his career. In exchange, you pick up a 1st round pick this year and probably at least a 2nd round pick next year and you address numerous needs with young immediate-impact talent through the draft. Next, you pick up Alexander on the cheap and push Rudi to earn the RB spot. Of course, in a town where the franchise-tag designation was used on a back-up OL, none of this will happen.
