T.J.: Maybe best to trade Chad

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Chad Johnson's confidant, said Thursday that his teammate of seven years is serious about not playing again for the Bengals.

Houshmandzadeh told The Enquirer that it might be best, in spite of the salary cap hit, if the Bengals were to grant Johnson’s wish to be traded.

"If he’s not traded, he’s going to be a problem," Houshmandzadeh said.

He found himself talking to both Johnson and quarterback Carson Palmer on Wednesday, the day Johnson strongly refuted Palmer’s comment that Johnson had told him he would report to the Bengals when required.

"Honestly, it’s the same thing; he doesn’t want to be here," Houshmandzadeh said. "Will he eventually show up? I don’t know. Logic would tell you he would show up and get a credited season. Whatever month it is – September, October (or) November – it’s going to be a distraction."

Houshmandzadeh compared the situation to a husband and wife divorcing. If one spouse wants to leave, the only reason that spouse might stay is out of pity, he said.

"It’s going to be ups and a whole lot of downs," said Houshmandzadeh, comparing Johnson’s relationship to the Bengals. "It’s early. We’ve got May, June and July. We have 53 players on the team. Do you want to roll the dice and get him to Cincinnati and see if he will perform and be professional? But will it be such a disruption that it will be another season down the drain – a season when (esteemed right tackle) Willie Anderson doesn’t get to the playoffs?"

Houshmandzadeh, the team’s player representative, told Johnson that he faces more than $14,000 a day in fines for not reporting when required.

"He doesn’t care," Houshmandzadeh said of Johnson’s reaction.

By crossing swords with Palmer, Houshmandzadeh said, Johnson might have picked a fight he can’t win.

"Carson is the $119 million man," Houshmandzadeh said. "I talked to him (Wednesday). He said, `I don’t know what I said to (anger Johnson).'"

The Bengals need to sit Chad on the bench until his contract is up! Why should they take a huge salary loss because of his temper tantrum? Let him get fined everytime he doesn't show up and spend the next 2 years sitting on the bench, then let another team deal with him.

That's it. The can't possibly trade Johnson now. Not after TJ's comments. TJ shouldn't be making comments about the player. His comments probably just created the biggest rift on the team. Maybe Cincy should trade Chad and TJ and anybody else that wants to open their yap.

I think that Chad should stay in Nati and run 10-12 yard patterns over the middle for the rest of his career.

Trade CJ Jerko Ochino Yoko Ono Butto. Just trying to be positive here.

Bingo! Let TJ run the deep stuff, and after a season of letting LB's smack him around for the fun of it, let's see how much Chad and his 250 yards is worth to another team. What do we feed these receivers? It's Carl Pickens all over again. The guy truly has lost any sense of team and community I once credited him with having.

How can a person under contract for multi-millions breach it? On top of that get fined too.

Legally, make this sucker sit.

The only place Cincy should trade Johnson is to Atlanta. We'll see how much he likes catching passes from Harrington, Redman, or Shockley. If that doesn't happen, let him enjoy his weekly fine letters until Rosenhaus has to dump him for not having any cash!

Ok, I think we all agree. Chad at one point was funny (at times) and harmless. Now he's become Cincinnati's version of T.O. I have to bring up the obvious point of his agent Drew (I think you should sit out until they pay you) Rosenjerk. I personally can't say enough venomous and hateful things about the guy. He has been very detrimental to the game thus far. He simply preys on the ego of athletes and makes problem children out of them. I say we ban Drew Rosenhaus from the game, therefore reducing the amount of dickosity from players.

chad johnson just makes me sick. he's a showboat and never cared what it cost his team in penalties, as long as he got the camera on him showing off with stupid stunts. he never has been the receiver that TJ is. he can't catch and then fall dead to the ground so he don't get hurt! He can't leave town fast enough for me. I was never a fan. Just buy him a new diaper and let the cry baby go.

This yapping has been going on so long that I don't even remember what Chad's problem with the Bengals really is. It's not money or playing time. Is it just him wanting to "have fun" on the field?

I do have a suspicion that Chris Henry is part of it too. When Henry returned, Carson looked his way a lot. So *basically* Henry was a favorite even though off the field he was quite unsavory. So Chad may have thought -- hey, I'm doing what the team wants me to do, and this criminal rejoins the team and gets all these looks!

Given that Chad's cousin was thrown off of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers for a year, who was also a prima donna, and b/c he shares the same agent as Owens, who pulled this stunt in SF and Philly, Chad's actions should not surprise anyone.

Its all about money for Chad & nothing else. He wants more than the 3M per year, which is what remains on this contract & figures that he will be able to renegotiate a better deal with someone else.

While TJ may have said what he said, in part to help Chad get out of Cinci, since TJ is not also requesting a release I don't think it is fair to say that TJ was being anything other than honest.

Palmer is the key to this team, not Chad Johnson. If the Bengals can get some value for CJ, they should trade him -- the Bengals are UNDER the salary cap anyways from what I have read. If they can't trade him, release him & then sue him for breach of contract in connection with the upfront bonus if he carries on that he refuses to honor his contract.

The bonus was paid b/c of an understanding that, physically able, Johnson would honor his contract. He is not honoring his contract & thus I would recommend that the Bengals consider suing him for a breach of his contract in terms of the upfront bonus money. The Bengals should talk about this option with an attorney, if they have not already.

I have nothing concrete to back this up, but I wonder if the reason Johnson has had this 180degree meltdown over being here is because he is cash strapped and desperate, and thinks this is the only way he can get out and get a new deal. The last contract was heavily front loaded, and all that money may now be gone, and I understand he has a number of illegitimate kids to support, maybe he's made some bad investments, and he's not getting any younger, so future prospects for earning from playing football could be coming to an end. In general I always find it amazing how a wealthy person's lifestyle often expands to fit their income at the time, then when the money runs out, panic sets in.
Chad should keep in mind that Mike Brown beat the IRS. Putting one malcontent wr in his place shouldn't be all that hard in comparison.

How about someone tell someone Chad that he signed a contract and to shut his pie hole. I truely hope for the league's sake that Mike Brown does the correct thing here and make a public announcement (directed at Chad and his "shark" agent) that Chad is under contract. He is going nowhere. If he does not wish to play, he will sit on the bench. If he does not show up for mandatory functions, he will be fined and loose his game checks. Explain that this action will be done as long as he is under contract. Then after 3 years, as a free agent, he can go to whatever team he wants to.

I think it is about time that the owners make the players realize that this is the reason why contracts are created, negotiated and signed. Let's hope Mike Brown will be the stubborn jerk we have accused him of being. Do the right thing Mike. Exercise the contract and sit Chad on the bench. Perhaps Mike Brown was correct with trying to get the language in the contract about talking smack against the team in order to get out of a contract.

Regards,
Dennis Gilgallon

What a shame it's come to this. When Marvin arrived, he brought a breath of fresh air to a losing organization. There was hope and optimism in the air.

It took a while, but they finally made the play-offs in 2005 and things were looking good. Granted, I think they should have focused more on the defense with their personnel moves instead of drafting Chris Perry.

Then the double injury against the Steelers, and the total meltdown in the locker room, with Chad throwing a fit and hitting his coach at halftime.

You can pretty much point to that pivotal event - and the gradual erosion of respect for Lewis because he didn't bring down the hammer on Chad afterward - as the peak of optimism for the Marvin Lewis era. Since then, it's been all downhill from there.

The last Cleveland game this year showed me who Ocho Sucko really is...Bengals first drive, it's 3rd down, and Carson throws Chad a perfect quick out splits the 8 and 5 on his jersey with the ball, would have been first down, but Chad, being who he really is, was too lazy to get his hands out and catch the ball with his hands, so the ball hits his chest and bounces to the ground...that's not the kicker though...the real kicker is that the camera stayed on Ocho Sucko, and he immediately glared back at Carson, instant "reaction", like he was trying to blame him for the perfect pass that this a _ _ clown was too lazy to catch (this'd also be what TJ was shown trying to "teach" Mr. Future Hall of Famer on the sidelines during a previous game that the Bengals went down in.) TJ is right, get rid of this cancer, whatever it takes...he's not that good, and is never going to change...let him become somebody else's nightmare...

Trading or releasing Chad Johnson WOULD BE THE BIGGEST BLUNDER THIS ORGANIZATION COULD EVER MAKE, and they have made a lot. Let Chad sit out for the next three seasons as we all sit and watch his skinny body atrify. No one would want to sign him after the end of the 3 seasons. Also ban him from the practice fields and locker room and anywhere near the team. If he wants to fire off some bombs towards the club he'll have to do it from home. Chad declared war on the Bengals and it's about time this organization show some cajones and destroy Chad Johnson and his career.

Here is my suggestion. We trade Johnson for Arizona's first round pick and select Dorsey. Then with our pick we take Ellis. Two big time tackles for 5 or more years. Forget about it.

I like the Daugherty article, The "Good Chad" and this Chad. This Chad has proven his critics correct, that he's immature, selfish, and a problem. All of his behavior just makes a fool of himself. What I don't understand is why can't the Bengals fine or suspend him? This is behavior detrimental to the team and the league. What would a Procter & Gamble or GE, etc. do? It gets me mad but it's also really sad. He had the city eating out of his hand. Now no one can stand him.

I think we should trade him to Dallas for 1st and 5th round picks. Atleast make it a productive season. The cap hit is offset by Chad's salary if we choose to just let him sit... he's smart, he'll figure out a way to get paid and not play... like randy moss in oakland.

at 4/18/2008 4:43 PM Blogger Aaron T. said...

Too big of a cap hit, doesn't make sense to trade him. actually a better business/team move to pay him $2 million to sit and hope he comes around than to give up $8 million for nothing. i hope the bengals do NOT give in to his trade demands and make him live up to the name he signed on both contract extensions he signed.
also for what it's worth drew rosenhaus is a slimeball.

I'd love to see Mikey fry him (sit him) just like most of you.
But it won't work. Chad'll show up (contrary to what he says) and be a total cancer to a team with too many problems already.
Got to trade him! for anything.

I used to be a Chad fan, but not any more. He lost me a long time ago with his childish tantrums. TJ is right. They need to trade him while they can get something for him. Not sure if that is before or after the draft, but a couple of good draft picks is better than living with a festering cancer!

Funny thing is, in 2005 I was saying CJ was weak, wouldn't go over the middle, was a huge distraction, and his game was weakening in clutch situations because the league knew he couldn't take a hit and hugged the sidelines because of this.
I was, of course, lambasted, bashed, told to blow my own head off, and even had one guy so tightly and sadly wound that he came on here posing as me and posted a bunch of silliness. For all your "good riddance" talk, I say shut up and eat it. Eat the crow and admit that this team, even when I saw these holes in 2005 and was pleading with Curnutte to report them, not a bad word could be said about the guy. You all were so into his antics then. It reminds me of that scene in Major League 2. Parkman comes up to the plate when he was an Indian and shakes his tail, Uecker says, "Parkman doing that little shake that drives the fans crazy." Then, later, after PArkman bolts for a new team (see: CJ, three months), and then plays the Indians. He comes to the plate and does his shale to which Eucker replies, "Parkman, doing that little shake that disgusts the fans here in CLeveland.
CJ is your Parkman.
Wise up, this team is really really bad. They were bad last year, lost some of those guys, and replaced them with worse. Let me know how that works for you all next year.

Zach,

Thank you! That answered my questions about June 1st! That does put things in to perspective.

By the way, this is my theory-
Chad had always complained that someone working for the bengals had been saying things. We all thought, Who? While being unclear about the whole situation it all seams so clear now. I dont know, maybe it is me, but Mark seems to be wraped around Mike Browns little finger. I read your artical Zach, and looked up if that was actually how things worked. I found this artical was true. (and the obvious -why would you pay an unproductive reciever more than the cap hit over a period of years). Now, Mark, for being a bengals beat writer and, should be one of the more knowledgable people on the NFL in this city why havent you explained this before. Why have you been so pro-cap-hit in this situation? sounds alot like what the Bengals themselves where doing. Are you the in house person Chad is talking about. You always say what they say, and i would believe as a writer you would want to explore all of the hypothetical options for your fans opinion (especially in a blog) on this situation.

This situation actually made me lose all respect for you as a professional. Why, because I have explored two options in my theory!
1. you are paid on the side by the bengals thus being the reason we still have never heard any possible options other than what ML and MB say to the fans (taking us for fools)

or

2. you are just a bad writer that doesnt do his homework or cant figure out any other way of getting around this situation yourself (and i am not saying a way to prevent losing money i am just saying you cant weigh out the pros and cons)

I still think Chad is a friggen buffoon.
Carson Palmer will be writer of the Year (just sayin)
