What are your top 10 picks in draft?

OK, I've had my first couple of chances to write a mock draft of the first round, all 31 picks.

Go ahead, what do you think will happen in Picks 1-10, with the Bengals at No. 9?

We'll update our mock draft online at the end of the week and again on draft morning, April 26.

What scares me more than anything is the words that the Bengals don't think they hve any gaping holes.

Here is my top ten...

1. Jake Long
2. Vernon Gholston
3. Glenn Dorsey
4. Chris Long
5. Ryan Clady
6. Darren McFadden
7. Leodis McKelvin
8. Matt Ryan
9. Sedrick Ellis
10.Keith Rivers

I think the Bengals will trade up into the Chiefs position if they think Ellis won't drop. Chiefs could still get their man at 9 too.

1. Miami: Jake Long
2. St. Louis: Chris Long
3. ATL: Glenn Dorsey
4. Oakland: Darren McFadden
5. KC: Matt Ryan
6. NY Jets: Vernon Gholston
7. New England: Leodis McKelvin
8. Baltimore: Ryan Clady
9. CINCINNATI: SEDRICK ELLIS
10. New Orleans: Keith Rivers

I would be surprised if the Saints try to trade up and snag Ellis before he drops to us. If that's the case, the Bengals grab the Jeff Otah or Keith Rivers.

1. MIA- Jake Long OT
2. STL- Chris Long DE
3. ATL-Glenn Dorsey DT
4. OAK- Darren McFadden
5. KC- Matt Ryan QB
6. NYJ- Vernon Gohlston DE
7. NE- Brandon Albert OG
8. BALT- Leodis Mckelvin CB

And with the 9th selection of the 2008 NFL Draft
The Cincinnati Bengals select....................
Rashard Mendenhall RB University of Illinois
(With Ellis sitting there and all the cries in Bengaldom for upgrading of the interior line of the defense, Mikey Boy still will not pay top 10 money for anything but "skill" positions. Coach Lewis' statement of getting back to rushing the ball and stopping the run goes straight to Mikey's head and picks the next best RB on the board to bolster the rushing attack and can get a less expensive DT in 2nd or 3rd Rds, proving once again that the Brown family thinks that offense and offense only fills the stadium and another year goes by of ignoring the GLARING and BIGGEST weakness of this franchise)

10. NO- Sedrick Ellis DT

Here's what I see shaping up in the 2008 Draft.

Here's mu guess on the first 9 selections of the first round.

1. Miami - I think they will take an offesive player first with OT Jake Long.

2. St Louis - they need everything and will take DE Chris Long to strengthen the rushing defense.

3. Atlanta - They need a QB but they can't afford to pass on DT Glenn Dorsey.

4. Oakland - They always do wild things so I think they will draft RB Darren McFadden.

5. Kansas City - QB Brian Brohm.

6. N Y J - I see the Jets taking either RB Jonathan Stewart or LB Vernon Gholston.

7. N. E. - Since New England lost 2 starters at CB I see them taking either Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who's stock has really risen or Leodis McKelvin. Although the could I don't think that NE will go after Sedric Ellis because of the need at CB plus they already have youth at DT.

8. Baltimore - I see the Ravens being a real spoiler here because I think they will move to prevent Cincinnati from getting a top notch DT. Therefore I see them taking Sedric Ellis if he is still on the board. If not on the board I think that they will draft QB Brian Brohm or Matt Ryan. In the event that neither of those players are available I think that they will go after OT Ryan Clady to shore up the offensive line.

9. Cincinnati - Since both Dorsey and Ellis will be gone by the time that Cincy picks I see them taking either Rashard Mendenhall at RB or Derrick Harvey at DE. Harvey would appear to be a good pick for them but he and Mendenhall are really not the best player on the board at the number 9 pick.

Based on the prospects I think that Cincy needs to work out a trade with St. Louis or Atlanta in order to move up in the draft so that they can get Dorsey. Preferably swapping with St. Louis for the number 2 position would be best because that way they can get either Dorsey but if he's not the first pick or Chris Long who is bona-fide DE. This is a definite possibility now considering the loss of 2 more DLM in the last few days.

After the first round I'm guessing
that Cincy looks to WR James Hardy, OLB Shawn Crable, WR Devin Thomas or MLB Phillip Wheeler. I'm thinking Hardy will add the depth for the loss of Chris Henry but OLB Crable will add further depth at the LB position.

For the 3rd pick they should look at WR Andre Caldwell or DT Frank Okam depending on whether they trade up on the first round. I really like Okam becuase of his size. Of course if they do trade up it's possible that this pick will be lost to the trade.

For the 3rd round compensatory pick I think they should look at DT Red Bryant, WR Jordy Nelson,OG Roy Schuening or OLB Beau Bell. WR Nelson appears to be a burner and could be a kickoff specialist.

For the 4th round pick they should look at RB Tashard Choice, TE John Carlson or OC Steve Justice as possible picks. The RB sounds appealing based on last years running game but I also see a need to pick up a backup Center.

For the 5th round pick they should look at WR Will Franklin or WR Kennan Burton who have good size and speed, CB Tyvon Branch who can give depth at CB or DE Kendell Langford which has good size at the position or OG Jordan Grimes who can provide OL backup.

1. Miami Dolphins - Jake Long
2. St. Louis Rams - Glenn Dorsey
3. Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan
4. Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden
5. Kansas City Chiefs - Sedrick Ellis
6. New York Jets - Vernon Gholston
7. New England Patriots - Chris Long
8. Baltimore Ravens - Leodis McKelvin
9. Cincinnati Bengals - Rashard Mendenhall
10. New Orleans Saints - Keith Rivers

I'd like to see the Bengals move up and get Ellis but they will probably hope that he falls. If he does, I think they would be better served trying to trade back with a team wanting someone like Clady (Carolina?) and taking the best player available. That could be a Keith Rivers or Mendenhall.

If the Bengals take ANYTHING OTHER THAN DEFENSE WITH 1st PICK....My TV will break. If there is ANYTHING on Offense that needs fixing, it is the coaches first. Bratkowski has NEVER had success in his career. It is time for him to go. Also, there is WAY too much Defensive talent in this year's draft to pass up on.

Let's see... Ellis, an every down star who will make those around him better, or a 5th Running Back? Mendenhall...HA! Stupid pick. It makes no sense to have talented Defensive coaches with a sorry defense and have sorry Offensive coaches with a talented Offense.

I personally dont see ellis falling to us. I think Mendenhall, Harvey, or Rivers may be more realistic. If Ellis is still at #9 then i would most definetly say Ellis!

jr9887, I pray your right!

9 - CIN - Keith Rivers OLB
10 - BAL (via trade) - Brian Brohm QB

Ravens trade down because they can still get the player they want (with the Saints or another team) and they screw the Bengals at the same time. This is a move that GM Ozzie Newsome is saavy enough to do and we will stupidly sit there and let it happen.

awhite,

While i agree with you on almost everything... Are you saying, since we have a sorry offensive coordinator we should also have sorry offensive players? I dont understand that logic. If you could please explain to me how that would help us win that would be fantastic! I think Ellis "CAN" be the best pick for us if he falls that far. So i do agree with you there. (unless mcfadden falls that far)

Carson Palmer will be MVP (just sayin)

Mike from... the bengals franchise ending as soon as they get rid of the salery cap.

i really get the strong feeling that Mcfadden falls to us just because the other teams at the top have stronger needs than RB, the only 2 teams that would possibly draft him is the raiders and the jets and with the raiders sitting so close to the top i think they will take a Dlineman and the jets are already loaded at RB so unless someone trades up this what i think will almost happen..remember every year a player slides and you have to take a strong look a whom that player maybe and right now i think that its McFadden

9. Cin - Derrick Harvey
10. Bal - Matt Ryan

If jr9887 is right, then the Bengals should grab Chris Long!

I highly doubt that will happen.

Historically Marvin's defenses are based on great LB play - I could easily see Keith Rivers being the first selection, and in the second round see which DT or DE is available. Dre Moore maybe?

Dallas, Atlanta, KC, and Baltimore selections will dictate who is available. Dallas may jump up and grab McFadden, who knows.

When all is said and done, defense must be addressed, OL next, then WR, IMHO.

If the Bengals select an offensive player in the 1st round, I will punch a baby. Sedrick Ellis if he is there . Otherwise, Harvey or Merling.

Everybody is on the bengals draft board, and as much as i hate to say it guys you cannot draft by need it will only get you into trouble, the only time you should ever draft by need is if you have two guys rated the same on your board. Our 1st round pick means nothing anyways they always flop it seems we get better value in the 2nd round

jr9887, you just contradicted yourself. You said that the Bengals should not draft according to need, but you have Darren McFadden falling to the Bengals on your mock draft (and, yes, chris long will be drafted in the top 5). He will never fall there using your philosophy; a team that doesn't need a running back will draft him because he is the best available pick. Also, even if we didn't have a DESPERATE NEED for a d-lineman, Sedrick Ellis would still be a steal at the #9 pick. If he (or Dorsey) isn't there, look for us to try and trade down.

Picks 1 thru 8: I DON'T CARE!!
The number 9 pick? I DO CARE!
I HOPE Ellis is there at 9 and our beloved Bengals snatch him up.

NO OFFENSIVE PLAYERS DURING THE FIRST DAY PLEASE!!!!! This defense has been the bottomfeeder for too many years!!! Reload that "D" NOW!!! Draft players that CAN and WANT to tackle! They have 10 picks and 7 should be defense.

The running game? You start improving your running game with the O-line first. RB is the least of their worries right now.

canmickcoach?,

You said,"Historically Marvin's defenses are based on great LB play."
Great LB play starts with a DL that dominates the line of scrimmage. Historically, Marvin's Bengals' defensive line has been less than average.

This whole "draft the best player available" mentality is ridiculous. You have to draft by need to some extent. You have to know your needs and know you have a variety of needs and then take the best player available that fits one those needs.

If we draft the best player available, we could get Matt Ryan so there goes that argument right there.

Our needs (in order) are DT, LB, DE, WR, OT and then some. To me our first three needs are more dire than the last two. Given this, I think we should take the best player available of the following:

Glenn Dorsey
Chris Long
Sedrick Ellis
Vernon Gholston
Ketih Rivers
Derrick Harvey

You can't have a strict best player available approach. This isn't fantasy baseball.
