Chad to Carson: Out of my business

Chad Johnson, the Bengals' disgruntled five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, took exception to comments made this morning about Johnson by quarterback Carson Palmer.

Palmer said Johnson told him that he would be at the mandatory minicamp in mid-June.

Unhappy with what he read on the Internet, Johnson called EPSN.com's John Clayton and told Palmer to stay out of Johnson's business and that he would not report.

Johnson has refused to speak to Cincinnati-based media since October.

I hope Marvin calls for a "code Red" on Chad when the little weasel finally reports for camp.
What a tool.

Chad is a crappy teammate.

Read what was said about his contract JUST TWO YEARS AGO by his agent:

""In terms of 'new money,' and just being unique from the standpoint of being able to do something for a player who still had four years left on his [existing] contract, it's really monumental," said agent Drew Rosenhaus, who was hired by Johnson a year ago to upgrade his contract "As long as I've been doing this, I've never been able to get an extension like this, basically because of the time remaining on the contract. It's historical. And it's a testament to Chad, and how well he's performed, and to Bengals management for the way they have handled this and the commitment they've made to him."

Mark is there "any" options we have with trading him without any cap penalty?

Carson Palmer will still be MVP (just sayin)

Mike from (smell something burning) my chad jersey

His childishness is really starting to become embarassing. Palmer didn't really say anything offensive and just told the media what Johnson supposedly told him. I think he's picking a fight just to show that he isn't submitting to the Bengals' will, even though he is showing up at mini camp.

Just really childish behavior on his part. He's not talking to the local media because we're the only ones who will call attention to his childishness while ESPN makes excuses for him. Johnson wouldn't talk to Clayton unless he treated him favorable and now is turning Clayton into a mediator. What a baby. Just get on the field and shut your mouth and maybe someone will respect you as a football player, like a "great one" that you always refer to.

If Chad decides not to show up for Camp, does that provide the Bengals with a lawsuit opportunity ala Ricky Wiliams and Miami?

I have reached the point where I can't wait to see the Bengals stand pat. Do nothing. Fine the bejezus out of Chad, and let him look like the idiot he is. He can rot on the sidelines for all i care.

Hey Chad, Read This: We dont need you, who wants a receiver that cant go over the middle, who drops crucial third down balls that hit them in the number, and who cries like an infant? NOBODY so stay at home with Smokey McPot(Chris Henry) and watch the real men (BENGALS) in the playoffs!!!!!

Where's all the Chad supporters that claimed everyone is being unfair to Chad? It seems like Chad continues to show his real character. What a horrible teammate. Let him go the route of T.O. Make him an elephant in the three-ring media circus. I hope they don't trade him and he continues to lose money and sit out. Who's going to want this guy (besides Dallas of course)?

I'm the last person ever to defend Mike Brown, but here's what I would do if I were him. I'd suspend Johnson from the team without pay for the year. I would ban him from the stadium or from coming within 1 mile of the stadium. I would then hire a lawyer and spend a few hundred thousand dollars on the inevitible law suit from Johnson and the NFLPA.

In other words, I would NOT give into his childish demands to be traded and I would NOT let him become more of a cancer on the team.

The only way to deal with a guy like this is to make him irrelevant and, trust me, once the regular season has begun, he'd become irrelevant.

It's sad that he's single-handedly destroying a once-great reputation - turning himself from one of Cincinnati's favorite sons to one of its lowest villans. Mike Brown has GOT to know that Bengal Nation would support him 100% if he played hardball.

Enough is enough!
Chad..needs to shut up..he has said enough and now coming out and calling CP out..what a cry baby!!
I want the Bengals to let him cry and use his whining as a motivation to be the Super Bowl 43 champs....
Carson is either gonna be the MVP of the league..or play like no one's a better QB than him..Yes i said that Peyton!
i have full faith in the Bengals organization..let the cry baby whine!!
No one is ever gonna show any respect to Chad ..coz he is a loudmouth and nothing else..He should go back and keep running with horses and dogs..will make him better.
WHO DEY baby!!
the future looks bright!
I bleed Orange and Black!!

Does anyone know what happens if Chad just doesn't show up? What can the Bengals do about that situation and how does it effect the cap and their financial situation. Just wondering what their options are without trading him, but MAKING him play for the next 3-4 years, however long his contract is.

at 4/16/2008 3:15 PM Blogger Unknown said...

I love that when Chad is criticized, he calls John Clayton. He could've called Carson and gone to the source. But that might not have been public enough. So he called John Clayton. Awesome.

The best thing for the Bengals would be for him to not show up. Then they don't have to pay him. If he does show up, Marvin should deactivate him like Gruden did Me-shawn. Sure, they would have to keep paying him, but they're not giving him what he wants and Marvin would teach him that no one is bigger than the team.

I use to be a huge Chad fan and defender but he is so far out of line I have lost all respect for the man and the player. The one time we go to the playoffs we come into halftime with the lead he is so selfish that he blows a fuse because it's all about Chad. Two of his team mates got cartedd off the field and still he's crying because he wants the ball more. He's not happy that we were winning because he wasn't getting any of the spot light. If that doesn't show you what a low-life loser this guy is nothing will. Not only has this team turned their backs on him most of the NFL has realized Chad is a cancer and only out for Chad. Heck just ask his kids and family...Chad only cares about Chad at the expense of anyone and everyone else. I have never seen a more pathetic man in my life, anywhere. Carson and the Bengals will be far better off without him. Just watch.

Chad is just a tpyical WR thinking his position is more important than it really is. Please go to Miami and see how many balls you catch with Beck at QB.

All he is worried about is the contract Larry Fitzgerald signed. Setting his contract up the way they did with him making a majority of the money in the first couple years was begging for this to happen.

How could they expect Chad to be happy making $7 million one year and then $3.5 million the next year..

Chad you are disgrace to football and a disgrace to the town of Cincinnati. Please pack your bags and be someone else's problem...Don't for get your bib on the way out

I have been a die hard Chad Johnson fan since the begining. I have defended his drops, his mouth, his dealings with the media, and his me first attitude. I doubt other than Chad, there is a bigger fan of #85 than me. That said, this last chapter of CHAD, is just too much to stomach. Calling out a well respected QB has reduced him to a petty, selfish, sad person (notice I didn't mention him as a player). If he wanted to just say he was misquoted or he misunderstood, I can live with that, but not the quote about Carson "staying out of his business." I say let him sit out all year, there is nothing we can use the cap money for right now anyway as all the quality players have been snached up. If he does come back, pay him but DON'T let him see the feild outside of special teams where hopefully he gets some common sense knocked into him.

Whatever happened to the “loyalty” clause that Mike Brown instituted? Wasn’t that instituted as standard language in all Bengal player contracts after the whole ordeal with Carl Pickens (which was pretty similar to Chad…and Corey Dillon…)? As I recall, that language stipulated the player could be punished for conduct detrimental to the team….was it nixed by the NFLPA or an arbitrator, or something like that?

On a separate note, couldn’t agree more with James 3:49. No matter where a fan has sat on the pro-Chad-against-Chad debate – when he called out Palmer like that, he just stepped over whatever line remained. Hard to see how any Bengals fan could support him now. The only question that remains is if Marvin/Mike Brown will finally recognize that bringing him back will just further bring the team down, or if they’re willing to cut their losses and just dump him – which brings up another question: what could they realistically get for him?

Unlike when they traded Dillon, Chad is still in his prime…I would hope they could at least get a 1st round pick, if not a 1st and a 4th…

Jim,

You nailed it!! I couldn't agree more!!

Chad Johnson,

You are a spoiled punk!! Once, again, it's about Chad!! If a REAL MAN had a problem with another man, he'd go straight to the source. Not you!! You have to bump your gold teeth to John Clayton or anyone in the national media that will listen instead! Your side show has gotten really old. It seems you just HAVE to get some publicity at least once a week!! What will it be next week? You can't be counted on for anything except running your big pie-hole! You've shown what a lousy teammate you are. You couldn't be counted on at crunch-time in any close game. Now you're starting to show what a lousy man you are becoming!!! May Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis let you rot on John Clayton's lap! YOU ARE UNDER CONTRACT!! YOU SIGNED IT!! Honor it!! Oops! You have no honor!!

I hope, sooner than later, the NFL de-certifies Drew Rosenhaus as an agent!!! He must advise his clients to act like little punks with big mouths. Isn't T.O. one of his clients? I thought so. Chad is acting the same.

Fellas,
Take this from an Eagle's fan who has been through this.

Chad realizes that the Bengals have dug their feet in, Just like the Eagles did in 2004 with "he who must not be named". Chad and "hwmnbn" are boys, with the same agent and surely have discussed how best to get Chad out of Cinncy. The answer is simple...

Go after the sacred cow....

The second TO went after Donovan, things went from a fight, to an all out war. TO and Rosenwhore knew the quickest way to get their way was to go after Donovan so badly that he eventually said to the Eagles..."Its either him or me". the eagles picked Mcnabb and sent TO home.

Chad has started down this path and it is very clear his sights are now aimed at Carson. He will continue to bash Carson until Carson tells the Bengals "Its wither him or me". They better do it before it gets to bad and they lose any leverage from other teams. The NFL network reports they have been offered 2 first day picks (a first and a second). That's a lot, and if true, the Bengals are dumber than advertised.

Looks like T.J. is going to get to go deep more often, like he has been wanting.

I have no problem with T.J. and Holt on the outside, Chatman in the slot, and Utecht at tight end. As long as Palmer is the one throwing the ball, and the running game gets in gear, the offense will be fine.

I would sue immediately under he centuries-old doctrine of "anticipatory breach of contract." That states when someone declares that he has no intention to fulfill his contract, the other party need not wait for the day of breach, but can sue now. Thus, the Bengals should file an immediate grievance seeking a return of the $8 million left in his signing bonus.

Oh, the CBA got rid of the "Pickens Rule."

This is just a sad day for me. I'm not sure why this is the breaking point, but can't we just let him go? Cap hit be damned. He's going to subvert the entire season.

The Bengals have said they're not going to get rid of him, and knowing Mike Brown, hated stick-in-the-mud he is, he'll stick to his guns. I hope with the ten picks in the draft, they take a couple WR's. So you'd have TJ, Holt, Chatman, Gabriel, Marcus Maxwell and a few rookies. If health is not an issue, they should be fine.

Let Chad sit. If it's about the money, who wouldn't want to get paid millions to sit around and do nothing all day? But if Chad really is the true competitor and gamesman he claims to be, he won't be able to stand watching new free agents and rookies taking his ball time. He'll have to give in, realize that he has to honor his contract, and play ball the way the boss says to.

If this was any other job, and the boss said to do something, and you just said no...you'd be fired. And the only reason we hear about it is because the national media panders to his complaining, because then they don't have to find stories, stories come to them. Chad just wants to be a story.

Here's how you handle Chad... Fine him fifteen to twenty thousand a day for every day he misses camp. Then when he gets burned by a jury of his peers in his Funny Bone class action lawsuit for 800 thou to a mil., he can cry to Drew Rosenhaus that the plan isn't working. Did Chad play his cards well with a liability trial coming up? When he loses 1 to 11/2 million for being a jerk, maybe his McDonalds' won't taste so good...
Don't get in a Pi$$ing match with Mikey Boy. This is the one area in which he excels.

Anyone know what happens if the Bengals try to trade him after June 1? Does the cap hit get spread across 2 seasons? I've been asking this for several weeks with no response.

Chad can sit on that thumb he's been sucking for all I care. I hope Mike Brown plays hardball. Don't trade him under any circumstances, even if the Chargers offer you LT and Gates in return. Just let him sit out if that's what he wants. For three years. See what that gets him. Send a message to the rest of the whiny, classes Rosenhaus clients. You see what this agent gets you? NOTHING. That would be beautiful. I guarantee the Bengals would create buzz for the team and make fans in every city in America. The Bengals could sell "Mike Brown" game jerseys, and people from every city in America would buy them to honor the owner who finally proved to the classes player that he wasn't bigger than the game, or his own contract.

Go Bengals. I'll take 2-14 next year if it proves that our team has class and character and won't put up with this trash. That said, let's win the Super Bowl without that little child and make him feel like an even bigger idiot.

Hey, Chad, if you are your own CEO, you're TERRIBLE at that job. Get back to football.

We need a full accounting of the Bengals options. Other than taking the cap hit by trading Chad Johnson before June 1, how can the team move him? Surely business heads like Mike Brown, Jerry Jones, and Rosenhaus can come up with some creative method for getting Johnson out of here. This last tantrum was the last straw. He must be wearing on his teammates as much as he has worn out his welcome with the fans. Too bad. Helluva way to end his days here, lumped in with Pickens and Dillon.

Mike's ONLY concern is the bottom line.
Letting him sit (payless) may be the answer.
Hope he sees it that way.
But I'm betting Mike'll trade for whatever he can get.

Either way, the Bengals are screwed again.

Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown,

Here is some advice on dealing with Ocho Psycho aka The Golden Grill: Let him sit and rot this season. You will save cap money by not having to pay him while he goes on every sports talk show from coast-to-coast saying how he is being mistreated. Then, sign TJ for a hefty extension and make him happy to be here. After signing the extension, tell Ocho Psycho that no matter what he does now to kiss up, there is no way on earth you will EVER renegotiate his contract and he will either play here or he will be out of the NFL. Play hardball with that clown and his idiot agent. No matter how much his mouth roars, you hold the cards. Keep playing them they way you are playing them by not trading him and one-upping him with TJ.

I'm not a Mike Brown fan by any means, but what Chad has said and done towards Carson is ridiculous. Mike should NOT trade or release this idiot, let him sit. Make other players like Chad (who have DREW as a agent) know that they can't cry and complain just to get out of town. I figured this low life would result in attacking Carson, he figures it's his only way out. Mike Don't give in to this idiot

It is time for the infamous "Carl Pickens" clause to be slapped on Chad's big head. Chad has actually moved way past Pickens and Corey Dillon on the jerk-o-meter. The Pickens clause would leave basically throw Chad off the team without actually releasing him. Oh, and without pay.

Mr. Brown, it's time to use it. The players union has enough to worry about right now with their contract set to expire with the NFL after the 2009 season

at 4/17/2008 9:38 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mark - thanks for clarifying the cap hit spread if Chad is traded/cut after June 1! My thoughts on what happens - they trade him after June 1 and get a quality player and a draft pick. Carson/Willie (the team's real leaders) re-do their contracts to soften their salary cap hits for 2008 and 2009. Bengals draft receiver in 1st or 2nd round this year. Carson stays out of Chad's business.

End of dealing with this crap.

at 4/17/2008 4:55 PM Blogger Rob said...

The really unfortunate part of this situation is that Chad the good faith that the Bengals had in him during his re-worked contract look ill-advised and naive. I've given Chad the benefit of the doubt many times over the years. I really can't do that anymore. He's a first-class jerk all the way.

at 4/17/2008 9:03 PM Blogger Kensil said...

Chad is nothing like TO and the comparison is idiotic. This is the off season, TO was a distraction during the season and he made jabs at McNabb..Chad have always said nothing but good things about Palmer. i.e. Chad thinks Palmer is as good as Brady and Manning. This was what Chad said recently about Palmer in Clayton's article "
Wednesday, the Pro Bowl wide receiver said he was surprised by Palmer's comments about his possibly reporting to mandatory camp.
"I wish he would stay out of my business,'' Johnson said."
That's not an attack at all.
