Report: Bengals did turn down Redskins

UPDATED, 4:56 p.m. (Blogger has been malfunctioning all day, repeatedly delaying my posts from Paul Brown Stadium.)

In scouring my tape of Marvin Lewis' press conference from 11:30 this morning, I have come across this question and answer:

Reporter: "Have you received any trade offers for Chad (Johnson)?"

Marvin Lewis: "No."

INITIAL BLOG POSTING: After the second ESPN this afternoon, in which Lewis told Chris Mortensen that his initial report was correct and that the Bengals had turned down Washington's trade offer for Chad Johnson, The Enquirer contacted Bengals public relations director Jack Brennan.

Brennan gave the following statement to The Enquirer:

"A questioner (a television producer) said ESPN had reported a Redskins trade offer of two first-round picks. Coach Lewis denied such an offer had been made.

"But ESPN, in fact, did not report an offer of two first-round picks. Coach Lewis later confirmed that the ESPN story, as actually written, was accurate. Marvin told the Redskins that we were not interested trading Chad."

ESPN initially reported that Washington had offered its first-round pick this year (No. 21 overall) and a conditional third-round pick in 2009 that could escalate to a first-round pick if Johnson met performance levels.

Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson's agent, has not returned a phone message from The Enquirer seeking comment on the day's news of Washington's trade offer.

The Bengals would take an $8.03 million salary cap hit if they traded or released Johnson before June 1. After June 1, the Bengals could spread the salary cap hit into 2009.

I honestly am to the point where if deals like this are being offered it might be time to take the deal. Then use some of those extra picks to trade up and get Dorsey and still have the other first from Washington to grab a WR like Kelly or Hardy. Plus next year they get another 3 (that could possibly be a 1) and probably a couple of supplemental picks. But then the jerk side of me just wants to see CJ rot until 2011 not playing a sport that he undeniably loves to play.

I hope the Bengals are just holding out for a better pick next year to be added to this package. If they are simply ignoring the quality of the offer and rejecting everything that is proposed, then they are truly, honestly, clearly complete morons, and deserve nothing better than to be openly mocked by every living football fan.

For the first time in a long time I am in full agreement with Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis.
You can't reward this crap.

I am in complete agreement ewad. It's not like chad will make or break this team this year. A receiver is only as good as their QB. Chad is acting like a baby and I would love for him to be forced to live up to his word and sit out. So what if the Bengals lose out on draft picks? Look at how the Marvin era draft picks have turned out anyways.

On the surface, it seems hard to believe that Marvin and Mike Brown don't see the obvious benefits of trading Chad --preventing him from being a distraction, and getting something of value in return.

But is it possible they're not just being stubborn, but actually feel it's better for the team if they send a strong message that Chad's antics will not be tolerated? I.e., this team has been selfish, undisiplined, and immature for years now, and this is how they're going to reassert control of the ship -- by telling one of the biggest stars he has to get in line or sit.

Personally, I say cut your losses, make a trade, and move on....but perhaps Marvin feels that's a short-term improvement/long-term inconvenience, and that this is the only way to retake control of the locker room. He's been called soft on Chad for years...can't say that now.

Our beloved Bengals ARE NOT GOING to trade that jerk until after June 1. The salary cap would "hamstring" our Bengals!! Too big of a hit. I wouldn't be suprised to see a big trade after June 1. That CHUMP (right, Mike from....?) will be traded right after June 1. Just wait. Some team is not going to be happy with this years draft and go after CJ (Complete Jerk) with an aggressive offer or,,,,,, some team is going to be "geeked" about this years draft and blow-up next years draft with and aggressive offer!! It's win, win for our beloved Bengals. Stand pat Mikey!! Make her,,,,, oops,,, him sweat!!!!

Chad is an idiot. This is a great poker game being played. The only loser in the end will be Chad. Oh wait, he is a loser. It doesn't look like Chad will be joining Palmer in the HOF (who never once boasted about his greatness).

The Media needs to stop nitpicking about what what was said and not said. knowone cares what was said and not said. We know he is not going to be traided at this point. If things change then they will change when they change.

Clearly why would you trade to avoid a distraction, and not wait until June 1, when the cap hit is half as bad. Why not trade after June 1 for a big lineman, another receiver, Urlacher or someone else.

Get real, he's going nowhere before the draft.

Mike Brown, Hmm:
1) Stand on principle & let him sit?
2) Trade him after 6/1 & get the most I can?

A Mike Brown no-brainer, if ever there was one!

Can the Bengals negotiate with a team, like the Redskins, to pick a player we want at 21 then trade his rights to us after June 1st? We get what we want and miss the giant cap hit. Could that be the Bengals dilemma?

are the employees running the ship? he signed a legal contract, make him honor it.

Love Marvin's comments of Chad backing up his word and sit this season.

Go Marvin. Enough of this pouting tactic from Rosenhaus. Next player. Next player. Next player.

I believe last year during training camp Marvin Lewis said 'We have too many players worried about their contracts and not enough worried about football'.

I think the Bengals position of not trading Chad is totally about that. If they trade Chad, then the rest of the players see that the Bengals caved again and that will not help to change attitudes. But by playing hardball with a player as talented as Chad, I think the Bengals organization is drawing a line in the sand. In my opinion, this is their only option.

For those who believe Chad is doing this only because he is tired of losing, let me say this. At the end of last year when Chad first started his whining, Chris Carter, the former NFL wide receiver was asked what his opinion was. Chris Carter said 'It's ALWAYS about the money'. I believe him.

I hope the Bengals do not cave in unless the trade offer becomes just too good to turn down.

Spike --

It does matter what was said because it is good to know if your football team's coach -- orthe man you're interviewing -- will just plain, flat-out lie in your face.

"No Comment" or "I don't want to talk about that" would have been the way to go rather than a flat-out falsehood, explained away by the bengals as a semanitc word game.

I am dissppointed actually. I thought much better of Coach Lewis than that.

Mark -

does the team have to pay any amount to the player if he sits out? Do they pro-rate it if he comes back mid-season? Also, doe sChad lose a year of credit from not showing up?

another way to ask this is what does each one lose IF chad sits.

I believe Bengals Management needs to stand pat! Why is it in professional football you do not have to honor your contract? In every other walk of life, if you do not honor a contract, you get sued. Why can't the Bengals sue for breach of contract?

Mike Brown would love to get rid of this clown (calling Jerry Jones) before June 1st. It would allow him to have 8mil in dead cap space. That is economics he loves! Money that cant be spent in player salaries. That way he can still be tight fisted and not, on the surface, look cheap.
