Bengals confirm Thurman return

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman, after what has amounted to a two-year NFL suspension, learned this afternoon that he has been reinstated by the league, the Bengals announced this afternoon.

"Odell has met the NFL’s conditions for reinstatement and has been added to our offseason roster," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement released by the club. "It is now up to Odell to continue to meet all NFL guidelines, and to maintain a standard of personal responsibility that will allow him the chance to compete for a spot on our team."

Thurman missed the past two seasons because of repeated violations of the NFL substance abuse policy.

His first application for reinstatement was denied in July, and he was told he could reapply after the 2007 regular season.

In January, Thurman was granted permission to begin working out with the team at Paul Brown Stadium.

Thurman was the Bengals second-round draft pick in 2005 from Georgia. He played in every game, including the playoff loss, and led the team with 148 tackles during the regular season. He also led the team with four forced fumbles, and his five interceptions tied for the most for an NFL rookie that season.

Thurman had been splitting time between Greater Cincinnati and his hometown of Monticello, Ga. He is working out and regularly attending Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings and working with a counselor.

Thurman opened the 2006 season with a four-game suspension, but it was extended to a full year Sept. 27 following his DUI arrest Sept. 25.

The Bengals expected to have him back for the 2007 season.

Much has changed for 2008.

The Bengals have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Zimmer and linebackers coach in Jeff FitzGerald. The team also is considering a switch to a base defense that uses four linebackers instead of three.

Thurman could team with Ahmad Brooks to form an imposing, big-play tandem of linebackers in the middle.

He is reinstated, but must keep himself on the straight and narrow.

Great news - now let's hope Ellis is available at spot #9 Saturday.

If Odell is even half the player he was too years ago he makes our defense light years better. I almost lost hope in the guy when I heard about that fight last year, glad to see it was a bunch of bull. Go Odell, WHO DEY

That's great news . . . I hope he keeps focused on sobriety and football. Now let's go out and trade Chadwick for a #1 & #3 pick (preferably Atlanta) and grab us a DL and McFadden in the first.

Congratulations to Odell and our beloved Cincinnati Bengals!!! Keep up the hard work, Odell. Same goes for your work on the field, too. Good luck!!

I bet Odell comes back hungrier than ever. He just might be that "red ass" this defense sorely needs!!!

t-mac do you really believe that ANY NFL TEAM wants to give a #1 and #3 for Chad Johnson? Seriously, if that was true, MB would take the cap hit and he would be gone.

If you mean #1 pick of the 3rd round and #3 pick of the 4th round, that would be closer!

There are a lot of teams interested in Ocho, but the best offer Rosenhaus has come up with is a 2nd and 5th round (inside scoop stuff!). That is why the normally very loud Rosenhaus has been so quiet on the subject! He knows, that a 30 year old WR with 3 years on a contract that pays a pretty good salary and who hasn't ran very good routes in his last year and a half VALUE, is not very high. WR are a dime a dozen, listen to all the sports gurus! Sorry to burst your bubble, but it ain't gonna happen.........

We don't want McFadden anyway.... we have very good RB, and this guy will be in trouble with the law before his second season in the league!

Josh Hamilton of the Bengals? Seriously, though, Odell's problem as a rookie was being "undisciplined" and not necessarily knowing what was going on...well, if you're out partying instead of studying the nuances of the playbook, and you're hungover for films and practices, you're not mentally sharp. Sober Odell is a scary thought - for the rest of the league. 25 year-olds are faster, naturally, than 23 year-olds, and they have "old man strength," the type that develops in your mid-to-late 20s. Odell's gonna be fine, and with Dhani Jones on him, Ahmed Brooks learning from/with him, and Jeanty out there, we'll be money on D - just hope the safeties are ready.

All a big if?

That's all I'm going to say.

I like to see a stud LB that put's fear in the opposition,be it Brooks or Thurman.Just someone that gets the job done. This corps. of LB's past few season's have not gotten the job done.

Firefly, T-MAC was right. Apparently the Redskins offered a first rounder this year and AT LEAST a third next year. It could get higher based on performance.

as an addendum, manningham in round 2.

In regards to 11:33

The bengals just turned down an offer for a first rounder this year, and a third rounder (conditionally could be higher)next year for chad. So I think he does merit that demand.

Not to derail the comments from Odell -- because I'm hoping he has his act together, and was glad to hear he's going to AA/NA meetings -- but to the person who said a first- and third-round pick was impossible:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3358557

"The Redskins offered this year's first round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said."

And of course, the Bengals said no. Thank you for ruining another day of my life, Mike Brown.

Did you hear the Bengals rejected Redskins 08 1st round draft choice, and 3rd round next year, that could reach 1st round, for Chad? The Bengals said no, and told the Eagles and Cowboys that they aren't trading him..

That is sad, get rid of him already, and get the draft, hell with the Redskins 21st pick, a nice WR would have been good, but Mikey boy is sticking to his guns, sad day indeed.
