Bengals take WR Simpson at 46

The Bengals selected Jerome Simpson, a wide receiver from Coastal Carolina. Pro Football Weekly projected Simpson as a fourth- to fifth-round pick.

Simpson had 41 receptions last season for a 17-yard average and 11 touchdowns. He is 6-1, 193 pounds. In four years, he had 161 receptions and 44 touchdowns.

The Bengals had their pick of some better-known receivers, including Oklahoma's Malcolm Kelly, Texas' Limas Sweed, Michigan's Mario Manningham and Cal's DeSean Jackson. Defensive tackles Pat Sims of Auburn, Trevor Laws of Notre Dame and Marcus Harrison of Arkansas were available, too.

This morning on the radio Marvin was talking about not over reaching for a player and then they draft a guy projected as a fourth rounder in the 2nd round. If anyone out there wonders why this team has had one winning season in the last 18 years, wonder no more

The person who most needs firing is Mike Brown. But since he's the owner we're stuck with losing every year. (Okay, every year but one)

Man!!! Now we pick a division 1 wide-out in Simpson???? WHO?????? If we wanted a wide receiver with size, Kelly, Sweed and Manningham were still there! Furthermore, we hade DT Trevor Laws sitting right there and we pass on him? WOW, this first day has been a wash! Brown is an idiot!

Ugh! Not only do we get outmaneuvered in the first, we then go out and take a WR rather than addressing our dire DL situation.

This will be yet another long season of continued front office ineptitude and Chad's whining that will poison the locker room (I'm sure it's started already).

Rooting for this team is like being in an abusive relationship. We all need a therapist, separation and some heavy medication (not necessarily in that order).

Hands down worst ran franchise in the world.

I don't know how the NFL works, but I read Moneyball and loved the chapter on the draftroom. Beane would detail a strategy about talking to a less regarded prospect, tell him the A's would sign him if he would agree to less money than the spot warranted.

Is there reason to think the Bengals are doing this here?

Why not take Laws or someone needed on defense, and then still be able to get the receiver you like later?

Really does defy logic.

The Bengals draft somebody you've never heard of so it's a bust already. People d your hoemwork. Read up on this guy, there are boards that had this guy going in the second round. If Swede and the like were that much more talented, they would have not been on the board. You fair-weathered fans are just looking for excuses to bash the organization. Sell your tickets and hop off the wagon if you'd like. Real fans won't miss you at all.

I predict this guy will be good and catch touchdown passes. Crybabies.

Well we won't have to wait long to see if we end up regretting not taking one of the better known receivers. We will see Malcolm Kelly (Redskins) and Desean Jackson (Eagles) this season and lucky us, we get to see Limus Sweed twice a year going forward with the Steelers. I do not understand this pick at all.

Bengals are dead to me! SIMPSON?! First they go cheap and don't get Ellis, Then won't even trade Chad for TWO First round pick which would've got us Mendenhall, and pass on Sweed for Simpson. To make it worst, they let division rival Steelers get both Mendenhall AND Sweed! BENGALS SUCK! They're going to be the next-year DOLPHINS.

Pick 46 Bengals WR J Simpson
Pick 49 Eagles WR D Jackson
Pick 51 Redskins WR M Kelly
Pick 53 Steelers WR L Sweed

Anyone notice a trend here? Like the team that has been to one playoff game in 17 years manages to reach for a 1-AA player projected for the 4th round, while franchises with real personnel departments - and more frequent playoff appearances (go figure) draft WRs from top 20 CFB programs after the Bengals?

Why do you think this team NEVER gets any better?

By the way,how is last year's fifth round QB pick doing?

at 4/26/2008 8:31 PM Blogger Brandon said...

I would love to see those boards you are speaking of Big Red. You know the ones that had him ahead of guys like Jackson and Sweed who were snatched up right afterwards along with Laws the DT from ND. This is straight from ESPN about Simpson

Simpson could easily emerge as a possession No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in the NFL. Regardless, don't be surprised in April's draft if Simpson comes off the board in the third-to-fourth round range.

Its all about taking your money. This guy feels lucky just to be drafted, so he will sign for a long time for pennies. That is what Mike Brown wants. Sources even said that MB was p.ss.d off that we got so many comp picks. He doesn't want to spend anymore money than he has too. That is why Chad is not traded, its cheaper to keep him and hopefully he will sit out and not get paid.....What a beautiful plan Mike Brown has.

at 4/26/2008 9:07 PM Blogger Jdarts said...

What this boils down to is now Mike Brown only has to pay this guy 4th or 5th round money as compared to picking Sweed, Jackson, or Kelly who were projected late 1st round or early second and would be paid as such. Remember, this is the same front office that refuses to trade Ocho Cancer most likely because of an over exaggerated cap hit. MB is cheap, there ability to scout is pathetic and nothing is

I find it hard to understand why there are a lot of people who are claiming they are finished as a Bengals fan based off of a 2nd round pick. If I remember right, Chad played at a small school for 2-3 years...then 1 at Oregon State.

The reports I've read say he is comparable to TJ. If that turns out, I'd say its a good pick. Only time will tell.

at 4/26/2008 9:10 PM Blogger Jdarts said...

Thank you firefly 18! You literally took the words out of my mouth. This was obviously a reach pick that saved MB a few bucks.

Wow, you guys gotta stop freaking out. The Bengals NEED a WR, and just because you haven't heard of a player doesn't mean he's not good. Malcolm Kelly and Limas Sweed had issues with speed, and Manningham with consistency. This guy has speed and athletic ability, which is what the Bengals' offense needs.

And what impact would a Sims or Laws be for the Bengals? Anything better than Peko? Probably not. So stop whining. I'm really getting sick of how much Cincinnati sports fans complain.

Everybody is harping on passing on big names but did you notice 5 teams also passed on Jackson, Sweed, Manningham. Would you be more excited if the Bengals took one of these guys instead?

Donny Avery Houston
Devin Thomas MSU
Jordy Nelson KSU
James Hardy IU
Eddie Royal VT

I think they should have taken Laws and waited on WR but people bashed a little known guy named Chad Johnson and loved a big school guy named Peter Warrick so lets see what happens.

Its a shame Chad being a baby and Henry deciding he would rather flip burgers for a living forced us to take a WR instead of defense.

Brad - if Simpson turns out to be comparable to TJ I would be very happy. Please keep in mind however that TJ was a 6th round pick. This reminds of taking Artell Toast Hawkins with a 2nd round pick. This ownership is pathetic.

The NFL Draft contracts are slotted and the money will be the same no matter who they drafted.

With think logic, Baltimore gets to pay Joe Flacco less money because he played at a small school and was projected as a 2nd Rounder?

This guy is no slouch and he replaces Henry as a guy who can make a big red zone catch. If there is one thing the Bengals do well, its draft WRs and 2nd round picks, so let this guy get a few reps before you bash him.

Trivia:

Name a wide receiver drafted since Bratkowski was named offensive coordinator who HASN'T turned out to be a major talent?

I can't hear you.

Name a wide receiver drafted in that time who was well-known and from a big-name program?

Still can't hear you.

Chad. TJ. Henry. Great talents, a bit unheralded. Each drafted because Bratkowki liked them. Word is, he really was impressed with this guy too.

Give our coaches on offense some credit. They are paid to do what they do, and judging by our top 10 offense last year in a BAD year, I think they know how to find talent.

That said, we really need defense.

Mark,
Your blog is great entertainment. I get a big kick out of reading the posts of all the NFL experts here who have never heard of Jerome Simpson, have no idea why the Bengals drafted him, have never seen him play or know anything about him until today, but have been champing at the bit to criticize whatever pick the Bengals made in Round 2.
Is he a good pick? Who knows? Just maybe we ought to wait to see how he does before exposing our lack of knowledge and making assumptions about his contract.
Just sayin'.

at 4/26/2008 9:51 PM Blogger TeacherScribe said...

Please relax. How often do you hear that the Bengals only draft guys from big name schools. How often do those turn out (Frostee Rucker, anyone? Mathias Askew? Kiwan Ratliff?).

Lay off the Bengals because they did their homework and went for a small school kid who they'll coach up.

Quick. Name me some of our past second round wide receivers . . . Chad Johnson, Darnay Scott, Carl Pickens, Chris Collinsworth . . . they know how to make the most out of a second round receiver.

Besides, if they go defense, half the people would complain that they didn't take a receiver or runningback.

The entire staff needs to be fired for this crap. Seriously, this is a joke and confirms that I will not be watching a Bengals game this year. They are not serious about getting better otherwise they would have gotten someone MUCH better in the 2nd round.

jdarts85 is a moron. That's not how paying people in the draft works. His agent will look at last year's 46th pick and work out a deal based on that.

If you think Mike Brown is so frugal, why did he never once trade down when he had all those top ten picks throughout the 1990's. He could have saved a ton of money doing so.

Get it right morons.

Amen Kevin! Finally a little sanity to the situation. This kid wreaks of athleticism. Let's see how he does before we "stop being fans."

Also, do we really think the owner who gave Willie Anderson then the biggest contract for an offensive lineman in NFL history, gave Chad Johnson the same for a WR, and Carson Palmer one of the biggest contracts in the history of the sport, really changed a pick for money? Yes, he's been a horrible owner, but get a life people.

P.S. Sims is still available, so obviously he's considered by many a "third-round" player. Would you all be screaming had they drafted him?

Mike Brown is a clown.

Turning down the picks that the Redskins offered was nearly as stupid as turning down the Saints to take Akili Smith.

This wide reciever does look good though. I am thinking he can replace Henry.

Relax Bengaldom there are still at least 5 DT,s available in the 3-4 round range.
Marcus Harrison/Arkansas
Pat Sims/Auburn

Ahtyba Rubin/Iowa St

There is still hope to shore up the line!

LOL!!! There are waaaay too many Fantasy Owners/GM's on this board. How can you bash a draft just because they didn't draft the player YOU wanted them to take? Mike Mayock on NFLN liked this pick a lot and Mel Kiper compared him to a smaller Chris Henry. That said, don't you have to wait awhile and see how players turn out? This ain't Fantasy Football, folks, and it ain't your money.

I guess all of you who've said you're done with the Bengals won't be back here tomorrow to bash the 2nd picks, right? Hehehe!

This is as bad as the 2nd round Artrell "TOAST" Hawkins pick and the 1st round Chris "missed 3 years with a sports hernia" Perry pick and the 3rd round Frostee "the missing snowman" Rucker pick. Again, no pay for a real scouting department. Slap the FT on a back-up OL, blow the Rogers deal, and let JS slide to San Fran. Still no DT. YeeHaw Bungels.

at 4/26/2008 10:29 PM Blogger Jdarts said...

Teacherscribe take it easy moron! With the compensatory picks its fairly obvious to anybody that MB is being careful with money. And your gonna tell me also that this guy wasn't a reach! Are you kidding me? On every board the HIGHEST this guy was supposed to go was the 3rd round, most likely lower. They may have been able to get him at 77 and address that porous defensive line. I do agree the Bengals have a knack for finding quality wide receivers but it just seems that this guy wasn't worthy of a 2nd round pick.

at 4/26/2008 10:50 PM Blogger Steven Ross said...

Simpson may indeed turn out to be a good pick but it was a reach in Round Two. With two 3rd Round picks tomorrow, we could have taken a WR then. Heck, Simpson might even have been available.

#46 should have been spent on helping the DL which has been a glaring weakness for years.

This guy could be the next coming of Jerry Rice and it would still be a STUPID PICK today. He would have been there with the Bengals pick in round 3, NO QUESTIONS AT ALL, that makes it a BAD VALUE PICK! I hope he is great, but the fact is: THIS IS A 3RD CLASS ORGANIZATION. They don't spend the money on players, on scouting, on marketing, or on top notch front office talent. I owe them nothing. Chad is selfish and obnoxious, but I'm starting to want out myself.

Ok one more thing jdarts85 learn how the draft works before opening your mouth.
"What this boils down to is now Mike Brown only has to pay this guy 4th or 5th round money"
Draft picks are paid based on the payment to the picks around them. You can't draft someone with the 46th pick and pay him the same salary as a 4th rounder. That is not how it works. Go take basic math again since obviously you failed it the first time.

at 4/27/2008 7:55 AM Blogger JackBlueAsh said...

In any other draft Ellis would have been a low 1st rounder or second rounder. Ill betcha many of you have never seen the guy play. You are making him out to be something he aint. His size will work againts him in the NFL..he will be average at best.

Keith Rivers is awesome..think young Takeo spikes

We saw Simpson play two games..think TJ/Henry. He was projected to be a 2nd rounder by many..by the way.

Big names in college dont always translate into big names in the NFL..quit crying and complaining

Jdarts you dont know what you are typing about regarding compensation

all of you Einsteins who think you know how contracts and the draft works..... you are showing your intelligence. Yes, the spot determines the overall # as far as $$ figures, and that is all you guys know about. The problem is, what you don't know, the contracts are full of monies garuanteed and not, incentives, etc. What a guy is willing to put into the contract determines his money and signing bonus. Do your homework before you comment!

jdarts85.

He might have been a reach, but it had nothing to do with money, as you previously claimed.

And go back to grade school. It's "you're" not "your."

All I'm saying is that you can look at several picks and call them reaches. Donnie Avery, taken with the first pick in the second round, was rated as a third or fourth rounder. Chris Johnson going in the first round to Tennessee (when they drafted Chris Henry in the second round last year)? You don't think they're fans are going nuts? Duane Brown was taken at least one round too high.

Just heard Jerome Simpson on the radio, his attitude is great, he sounds like a quality guy, and he's determined to help the Bengals and win a Super Bowl.

We don't hear that from the Chads and Chris Henrys we've had up here. And the guy has leaping ability so that will be perfect for Carson's high throws...

TJ and Jerome, sounds like a great combo. Chad has a lot to learn from our new WR, attitude-wise.

Now if Jerome can come up here, avoid the wrong crowd, and actually be a great human being (like TJ, and unlike Henry and Chad)--you know, no kids out of wedlock, no kids by 2 or 3 or 4 women, and no other B.S., then we'll be very happy about this pick).

LB, WR, DT so far this draft, it's okay, and maybe very good. If they'll draft the fastest defensive ends they can find for the rest of the draft, and one great OL, we should be better this season.

I like Rivers but the Bengals were lazy and let the Saints jump ahead to get Ellis..the Bengals should have been proactive and jumped ahead...I never heard of Simpson I would have preferred Deshawn Jackson a game breaker..He would fill the void at punt returner and kick return..he's a threat to go all the way every time he touches the ball and can compete for that 3rd WR spot..BTW he is training with Jerry Rice

This is a kid that can come in make a difference, not to mention lets remember there are several greats that came from small schools that people felt wouldn't make it in the NFL. Um does Jerry Rice ring a Bell? Not saying he is a Jerry Rice but who knows. This Guy surprised alot of folks in Reidsville at the High School as well as on the College Level no matter the size of the school, he still had to perform and he did. I am proud to see him make it as a Hometown Fan from Reidsville and as a Bengals Fan.
