Bengals take LB Rivers

With defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis off the board, the Bengals just selected linebacker Keith Rivers with the ninth overall pick. Bengals linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald ran the linebacker drills at the Southern Cal pro day workouts in early April.

Ellis is a proven run defender.

The Bengals have taken a defensive player in four consecutive first rounds, with Rivers joining linebacker David Pollack (2005) and cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall.

What are the Bengals going to do front seven-wise Mark? Who are the starters in your book?

Has Rivers asked for a trade yet?

New England knows what they're doing, the Bengals do not. Mayo will be the next great LB and Rivers will be with another team in 4-5 years after a decent career with the Bengals. Way to not be aggressive and address your real need...DT, with either Ellis or Dorsey.

I quit, I can't keep getting kicked while I'm down.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! How much more pathetic can this organization get? Are they trying to drive away the fan base? I was born in Cincinnati and have stayed a Bengals fan for 36 years, but now I just don't know how I can anymore. This teams needs, needed and forever will need a stud DT! They are cut off at every pass at every opportunty! First, the DT from the Lions got snatched from us just to go to the Browns. Now, we watch the Saints trade up and get our guy! All of a sudden the Bengals decided we didn't need a DT anymore? Why do they consistently sit on their thumbs and watch other teams get stronger?? Why aren't the Bengals more aggressive and ever trade up? Is it they don't care as long as the stadium keeps selling out? Well every single person who owns Bengals season tickets are MORONS!

When are the Bengals going to draft some 1st rated linemen, both offensive and defensive?

Well I guess Mike is hoping great linemen will just magical appear and play for peanuts

Now that we have 24 LBs on our roster, I suggest switching to a 4-4 defense and moving one of the LBs to TE and another to FB.

Mike Brown's scouting dept simply purchases Mel Kiper's book and uses that analysis to conduct their draft. "What ever Mel thinks is good enough for me!"

To all the people complaining, who did you want them to take at No. 9 with who was available?

I think you can be justifiably disappointed they didn't trade up when it seemed so obvious that New Orleans would go up, but given who was on the board ... all good in my book.

After seeing undersized LBs for the past few seasons in Miller and Johnson, this is a smart move. OK Ellis would have been ideal - but remember the defensive mess last season with no LBs. No wonder the DL was awful, there were no LBs. Rivers will start and brings insurance. But can the Bengals move up in the second to get the WR or RB?

Even though we do have 25 LB's, maybe Rivers is a really good player for years! But it does not address our NEEDS!

The only way to salvage this draft and our team, is to quickly trade with Dallas for their #28 and #61 this year and a 3rd round next year and give them Chad and Rudi (for cap reasons). Then turn around and get Limas Sweed, Kentwan Balmer, Roy Schuening. That at least would give us really good young players and the cap help we need. Then the second day could be used to draft the best available people at D-line, Running Back, and again the steal of the draft Mario Urrutia, Louisville. He is a big WR with soft hands who can not be matched up with a LB or S.

This all won't happen and we will be drafting the same way next year after a 6-10 season

They just don't get it. They play in a division which runs the ball. 3 of those games every year are in bad weather. Now that the Steelers have drafted a RB its more of the same. My 8 year old son just asked if Goodell could get rid of Mike Brown. If only......

I guess you all are the same people who complained when they let Landon go..Landon is a good guy, but this pick is a tremendous up grade..Do you remember last year when they were down to 2 LB's..I agree to not trade up, the Bengals need picks!! not just one for 2 pics...Remember the buzz was about Rivers, not Ellis, at USC Pro day..They will get a DT...hopefully Red Bryant TA&M(sub 5 40, 315 lbs) comprable numbers with Ellis.

jinkclass.. Ellis is not a stud DT

his size will do him more harm than good in the NFL

Hmmm why is everyone sooo convinced that Ellis is a pro-bowl DT. Last time I checked he is small and just because he is high on peoples mock drafts doesn't make him a god. I seem to remember that a few years back the mock drafts had Ryan Leaf rated above Payton Manning. Can't seem to remember how that turned out though????
