Landon Johnson agrees with Carolina

Landon Johnson has agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, agent Andy Simms told The Enquirer this morning. The Bengals did make an attempt to match the deal.

The deal is believed to be worth a little more than $3 million per season and a total of around $10 million.

Johnson visited Carolina in the past few days.

Johnson, the Bengals' second of two third-round draft picks in 2004, led the team in tackles three of the past four seasons. He played in all 64 regular games and the lone playoff game following the 2005 season. Johnson served as the personal protector on the punt team and called signals on that unit.

Johnson is the third starter from the 2007 Bengals defense to leave via free agency. Last Friday, starting free safety Madieu Williams signed a six-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. And on Saturday defensive end Justin Smith signed a $45 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bengals did re-sign starting weak-side linebacker Dhani Jones earlier this week.

Johnson is in a position to challenge Na'il Diggs for the starting job at weak-side linebacker with the Panthers. Their other two starting linebackers are former Carolina first-round picks Thomas Davis and Jon Beason, both players the Bengals liked coming out of college.

The other third-round pick in 2004, linebacker Caleb Miller, also is an unrestricted free agent. The Bengals are not believed to be interested in bringing him back. Miller is headed to Seattle for a visit with the Seahawks.

Williams was one of the two second-round picks the Bengals had in 2004. The top second-round pick, cornerback Keiwan Ratliff, was released early in the 2007 season. The first-round pick from 2004, running back Chris Perry, has played only one healthy season in four and did not play at all last year because he was rehabbing from ankle and shin injuries sustained in the 2006 game at Cleveland.

worked hard and a good kid, just not a very dynamic LB. Goodluck to him there but I'm not too upset about this, LB needs upgraded and he was just a C grade LB.

Great job Marvin & Mike! Let's not sign our leader in tackles for the last 3 years & rely on injury prone players & suspended players.

Seriously. So what options are left for the Bengals. They have what appears to be an undersized linebacker core that is injury prone. It appears that they are placing their hopes on a recovered drug addict that couldn't stay out of jail if he was paid to. I hope we are able to pick up at least one decent LB in free agency and the draft.

What is there hope for 2008?

Whether or not you think he had the talent, you can't argue this guy had the guts and heart you want on your team. He was a warrior here - playing through injuries other guys would've been out weeks with (M. Williams had a smiliar shoulder injury LJ had, Williams missed about half a season and LJ played every game) and playing all three LB positions without complaint. I salute you Landon. Good luck in Carolina.

BTW, for a team that says it builds through the draft it doesn't seem like they have many draft picks left. But, hey, as Marvin loves to tell us we're all stupid. Well, Marvin, I see better than I hear and I see you guys need to hire a GM.

at 3/07/2008 10:10 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey, by default SOMEBODY had to lead the team in tackles. While a nice guy and a good teammate, LJ is just an average linebacker who can be replaced by other average linebackers.

Mark, any comment on the YouTube interview with Shaun Smith that was posted on the web?? Smith stated that during the 2005 playoff game CJ did in fact swing at Marvin and make contact.

Ok, we have 2 healthy linebackers signed for '08: Rashad Jeanty (who I guess is healthy now) and Dhani Jones. I guess we are going to rely on a drunk that may/may not be re-instated and a guy who has 1 career NFL start at linebacker in 2 seasons, who still isn't healthy according to reports. On a side note * A good owner would not have given Chad the largest WR contract in NFL history 3 months after punching his coach in the eye in the biggest game in recent history. If you wonder why the team became criminals and why they play like they do now, here's finally the clear answer.

Mike is slacking....we need someone to step up and take this team over, Marvin can't discipline the team or get us better defensively(the two things we thought he was supposed to do) and I get the feeling Mike is trying to help but he just doesn't know what hes doing. Im almost at the point of feeling bad for the bengals especially Zimmer. He is destined to have a horrible defense. We'll see how the draft goes. Im sorry to be so negative but its so frusterating. Comments?

Marvin. Does buidling through the draft mean you build every year only on that year & let your previous draft picks go. Becuase that is what you do you moron. You give our players no motivation to win, hence the reason you have had only 1 winning season.

Who had a worst offseason, the bungles or the raiders? The raiders make horrible signings and the bungles don't sign anyone and can't draft b/c they have 6 scouts and the colts have 24 scouts, same ole, same ole. I'm looking forward to a 5 - 11 season next year.

Another HORRIBLE decision by this front office. How on earth can we not offer a high character quality player like Landon Johnson a contract around $3.5 million per season, I'm embarrased as a Bengal's fan. I predicted the Steinbach decision would come back to haunt us, and I predict this one will also. Why are we not retaining our good young players????? What is our plan??????????? Do we even have a plan???? One winning season in 17 years and you can see why. Pathetic!

Bye, bye Bengals.

With the remaining crew and whatever the Bengals pick up in the draft, a 0.500 season will be an over achievement.

I guess waiting to see if Dusty chokes on a toothpick will be the most exciting thing to watch among our two major professional sports franchises this year.

I'm betting he will after he watches Dunn play defense or sees Junior continually ground the ball towards right with the town of Cheviot playing between first and second.

Any takers?

You can't blame Marvin for the front office ineptitude...Unfortunately WHEN we struggle on D again next year he will get the boot.

Mark,

ProFootballtalk.com is calling you out:

SHAUN SMITH VIDEO ALREADY GONE
Posted by Mike Florio on March 7, 2008, 9:14 a.m.

Less than 12 hours after we posted YouTube video of Browns defensive tackle Shaun Smith announcing at a Browns Backers meeting in Maryland that Chad Johnson punched Marvin Lewis during halftime of a 2006 playoff game, the video is “no longer available.”

It makes no sense. The video wasn’t protected by any copyright, so YouTube couldn’t have been forced to take it down.

Our guess is that Smith got heat from his former head coach (indeed, Smith says on the video that he had spoken with Lewis at 1:00 a.m. that same day), and that Smith called up whoever booked him to speak at the meeting and told that person to get the video off YouTube or Smith would be at the next meeting in a far less charitable mood.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens from this point forward. Two years ago, the Cincinnati media gave Johnson the benefit of the doubt when he declared that “nothing happened.” Given his recent change in attitude toward the local press, we think that folks like Mark Curnutte might be more inclined to shine a light on this.

Then again, it only supports Ocho Stinko’s end game. He wants out of Cincinnati; there’s no denying that. What better way to make it happen than via a disclosure that Johnson did in fact jaw-jack his head coach at halftime of the franchise’s biggest game since Super Bowl XXIII?

Bring in TKO (Takeo Spikes) for a year or two, he's basically an equal replacement for Landon Johnson....not an impact linebacker anymore, but a tackling machine. Use him as a bridge to a MUST PICK linebacker in this year's draft. He's also insurance in case Odell/Ahmed Brooks are not ready to come back. He knows the city, so we should have the upper hand to get him. Its not like he would have a lot of competition to start, at least initially.

We are a lower-tier franchise as long as Mike Brown is running the show. Sad but completely true and fully supported by the facts. It is futile to back the Bengals with any serious emotion, because Mike Brown is not fully invested in winning. The Bengals are still my favorite team in sports, but I fully expect them to go 7-9 or 6-10 every year under their current ownership.

Landon, thank you for being the most consistent performer on our defense and for approaching your job as a professional and a role model. You will be missed but you will be much better off away from Cincinnati.

I disagree with the dissent about this decision. Landon Johnson was a very solid player for us and did lead our team in tackles. That said he NEVER posted any Odell like stats or Spikes like stats. I understand the uncertainty with the Odell situation but IF he does come back thats your answer to the release of Landon. He was a backup at best and if you wish to IMPROVE on the defense which i believe we all agree we need to, we need to get BETTER players, not the same average ones that we have. This can be done in a pleothora of ways; draft, trade, Free agency, different defensive scheme etc... I believe we need to improve and to do that we need to dump our average players and get better ones. IE Justin Smith, M. Williams, and now Landon. Lets build this defense, we now have a prolific defensive coordinator, lets give him a chance to improve our D. Quit bashing, if you wanna do that then become a bills fan. Thats all they do.

You will very rarely get comments from Mark C on this blog. I respect his reporting, I enjoy reading his articles, but he offers very little in the way of opnion. Just the facts. John Fay and Doc are opinionated and answer blogs frequently, and while I wish Mark would do more of that...he either chooses not to or has been told not t0/ Which is too bad because because I like him.

I saw a comment by an earlier post, what is the future plan.
It would be nice to the fans who has not deserted the team too hear from Mike Brown what his future plan is.

I agree with building by the draft, but as the earlier post said: You do not build by letting your draft pick leave when their first contract is over.
Then You just stand stamping on the same spot.

to 12:22 Don't tell any of us what to think or how to act as fans. I've been a fan os this team since 1974 probably before you were born! Landon Johnson is not a backup caliber player, obviously the Panthers would be paying him over $3 million per year if he was evaluated on film as such. Obviously you need to learn something about football, i.e. the play of the D-line either helps make the linebackers look good or helps make thier lives miserable. To evaluate any of our linebackers based on the last couple of years would be ridiculous. As for your thinking of cleaning out last years defense and replacing it with new personnel, How idealistic are you??? Other than the draft and what little is available in free agency where are these upgrades going to come from? They are not there! The grass is not always greener and I predict you and others will find that out in a few months.

I feel bad for Carson Palmer. He has a long term contract and is stuck playing for the worst organization in professional sports. I wonder how he feels that he may never go to the playoffs again? What a waste of a great career.

sorry everyone for your loss. As an avid panther fan I am extremely happy about the signing of LJ. He seems like a very classy player the kind of player that will be welcomed with open arms to the beautiful CAROLINA'S!!!!!!!!!

1104 - You're obviously still drinking the Marvinade. As "de facto" general manager Lewis is an integral part of the Bengals front office so, yes, he should be blamed along with everybody else. He's got as much to do with drafting these players and then letting them go as anybody else. By all reports he's had as much free reign as any previous head coach and I for one am not impressed with the results.

1222 - Do NOT preach to Bengal fans about the right to bash this team. How many consecutive regular season sell outs does Paul Brown stadium have? Answer: 36 and counting (it will be a team record 44 at the end of '08). How many winning seasons does this sorry franchise have during that stretch? Answer: ONE. The team has a total record of 38-33 during the sell out stretch (21-14 at home). Rather unimpressive, don't you think? How many NFL franchises would have this kind of fan loyalty given almost 20 years of futility? ONE good season out of the last SEVENTEEN. Give me a break.

Why is it that we have to read on the Bengals' blog about Shawn Smith's comments? And we find out about it from other bloggers? Shouldn't this be something that Mark reports about? Shouldn't this be front page news in the sports section? At the very least, shouldn't there at least be some mention about this in the Enquirer?

Why is this story being buried? Why don't we ever read about the locker room problems that Smith say exist?

ANYONE WHO THINKS LANDON JOHNSON WOULD HAVE MADE THIS A PLAYOFF TEAM IS A LOSER AND SHOULD HAVE THEIR FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE CARD REVOKED.

JOHNSON IS A SECOND RATE LB WITH POOR PASS COVERAGE, POOR BLITZ, AND AVG. RUN SUPPORT SKILLS.

OUR LB'S NEXT YEAR WILL BE ODELL IN THE MIDDLE D. JONES AT WLB; JEANTY AT SLB & BROOKS SUBBING ON PASSING DOWNS...I LIKE IT A LOT.

DEFENSES GAME PLANNED FOR LANDON JOHNSON....TO RUN RIGHT AT HIM...HE WAS A LIABILITY IN ALL FACETS EXCEPT SPECIAL TEAMS..GOOD RIDANCE LANDON.

at 3/07/2008 4:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hahahahaha. If you think Jeanty and Dhani Jones are better than Landon, it's YOU who needs his football card revoked. The only one of those four LBs better than Landon is O'dell, when he's not messing himself up. Brooks, unlike O'dell, has never proved himself. He may be good, I think he will, but it's all potential and hype right now.

Jeanty and Dhani better than Landon though? Get real!

How do we know that the new Defensive Coordinator liked what Landon Johnson did as a LB ? Maybe he looked at enough tape and thought Johnson didn't fit what he had planned. Or at least didn't at that price.

So many people wanted the entire defense blown up after last year, and yet when some of the decent players start leaving, they throw a hissy fit.

Fans are idiots.

Chuck in Cincinnati

Yea MIKE you are on crack sir...landon is way better than jeanty and dhani. Get real sir. Odell won't be an impact player next year either, he drinks and smokes too much!!
