Eagles release Spikes

The Eagles today terminated the contract of linebacker Takeo Spikes, one of two first-round draft picks by the Bengals who played his first five seasons in Cincinnati. He left the Bengals in March 2003 as an unrestricted free agent and signed an offer sheet with Buffalo. He was traded to Philadelphia a year ago.

I have a call into Todd France, Spikes' agent, to see if Spikes would have any interest in returning Cincinnati to play for head coach Marvin Lewis.

Spikes, a 10-year veteran, was popular with fans during his run in Cincinnati. He was second on the Philadelphia defense last season in tackles.

The Bengals do not discuss free agency or confirm visits until they file the visit with the NFL office in New York.

Might want to ask the Bengals if they are interested in the often injured old LB.

An experienced proven linebacker would definately be an asset to our young unproven group of linebackers! bring him back!! Our linebackers lack experience and discipline. A veteran like spikes would be a huge boost to our defense.

Screw Spikes. This is the same guy that said he wanted to play for a contender when he left Cincy, but he has never been to the playoffs with the Bills nor the Eagles. He didn't want to try to stay to see a different team (and the Bengals were different from 2003-2005) so why would we want him back? Maybe he can go play for the Raiders. Good riddance.

I am not one to go after older players, but in this case, I think it is a good thing. Spikes is familiar with Cincy (yes, a new coach, but an old system), and he is still productive. With the need for LB (as some have said), and no real reason to waste a draft pick, Spikes could fit in well, and listen up MIKEY BROWN, he probably would be fairly cheap!! We took a chance on Da Jones and looked what happened, Spikes would be just as good, maybe.

He might be a little older, or have a history of injuries, but Takeo Spikes could help to provide a little spark for the young LBs and give them advice. Also, to anyone that says screw him because he left the Bengals to play for a contender, how can you blame him? His first five or six years here were abysmal, and each person has his breaking point. Plus, I think the fans would give him a warm welcome and I think he would love to have a chance to end his career in Cincinnati.

I don't have a problem bringing Spikes back in, but not for starter type money.

The problem with most of these free agents is that they are big names with little production. Come on folks, there is a reason their team cut them.

I loved Spikes when he played here, but that was 6 years ago, which is a long long time.

The Bengals need Takeo and now he needs them to help rebuild his career. Mabey Marvin can build his confidence back up and help him return to the Ray Lewis type player he was. Imagine Dhani Jones (weakside), Odell Thurman and Ahmad Brooks (middle), and Takeo Spikes (Strong side). Bengals sign Etahn Kelly (Nose Tackle) with Robert Geathers, Odom, and mabey a Vernon Gholston playing 3-4. Break in the rookie and rest either Geathers or Odom on every series. Not a bad front seven.
