Jackson: Chad didn't hit Lewis

Former Bengals wide receivers coach Hue Jackson, now Baltimore's quarterbacks coach, was interviewed over the weekend on Sirius NFL Radio. The topic of former Bengal lineman Shaun Smith's comment came up: Smith, now with the Browns, told a meeting of Browns fans in Maryland that Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was involved in an altercation during halftime of the Bengals' playoff loss to the Steelers in January 2006.

"No, he's not accurate," Jackson said of Smith's comments. "I've heard about it, obviously; someone called me yesterday to mention it to me. And if Shaun did say that I'm a little surprised because, first, Shaun doesn't work in Cincinnati anymore. Shaun works for Cleveland, and I don't know how that would come back up again when it has been dead now for a couple of years.

" To shed light on it I'll say the same thing I said before. Chad Johnson never hit Marvin Lewis. Chad Johnson never hit me. Chad Johnson never put anybody in a headlock. Chad Johnson was very emotional at halftime of that game. The true story to all that was Chad had an IV in his arm and me, and him were talking about plans for the second half and he got emotional because he said, 'Hey, coach, without Carson (Palmer) I'm not going to be able to get the ball.'

"And that's what it was and I told him, `Well, then you need to tell (offensive coordinator) Coach (Bob) Bratkowski that.' And he ripped the IV out of his arm, and it's like anything else, you see blood coming out of a person's arm people think the worst. And he went from there to go into the locker room to let Coach Lewis know that, 'Hey, look, I want the ball.' And that was it. And when he opened the door he stumbled out of the training room so he was flailing and people think that he was swinging on people. Chad wasn't swinging on anybody. Chad would not hit Marvin Lewis, and Chad sure would not hit me. So that is not what happened and I'm very disappointed that now, even after two years, we have to discuss this again. But that is exactly what happened."

This whole situation could have been avoided (and should have been) if Bengals PR and Marvin Lewis/Hue Jackson would have simply told this story quickly after the incident occurred. The Bengals continue to show a lack of player and situation management skills. I'm not saying Lewis is a bad coach, but his personnel problems are apparent and he needs to feature discipline in his coaching strategy.

I would say the truth lies somewhere in between what Shaun Smith said and what Hue Jackson said. Jackson is still close to Marvin, so he's going to try to keep Marvin from looking bad. Notice that Hue's words were "that is not accurate". He didn't say they were a lie. Sounds a little bit like Marvin coach-speak to me.

Regardless, it's time to move on. I bet there will be plenty of people looking for Shaun Smith when the Bengals and Browns play.

Let me see, believe the x-coach that is VERY good friends with Marvin, and whom considers CJ & TJ to be his "sons" or players with no ties to the organization. Jackson makes it sound like they all sat down and had snacks at halftime. Believe what you want, but Lewis has a black eye and CJ to this day has no respect for him. It doesn't matter, but it explains why 10 players went on a crime spree after CJ signed the largest WR contract in NFL history (at the time) and why nobody plays with any respect for the coaching staff.

I sent this link to the guys at profootballtalk.com to see if they would post the other side of the story. Seems they couldn't care less about the truth and only rumors that stir the pot. They sent me some smart a$$ comment telling me to start my own website. Anyway, I think Hue's story sounds more believable.

Mark why don't you post all of the comments?

Are you afraid of something?

Looking to give him a pat on the back!

There are probably three players on that team that aren't completely sick of Chad Johnson.

To: Chris and Anonymous::
Marvin wants to keep the behind doors stuff behind doors. What is so wrong with that? Bengal fans used to have a cow with all the Pickens or Dillon talk coming out of the lockerroom and I think Marvin want to keep it private? Damned if he does or doesn't right?

Anonymous - I think Hue made it pretty clear I don't see any "in between" in his comments.

Some fans just cannot give any credit for someone in the Bengals organization handling things professionally.

Man, this Chad story casts a really ominous pall on next season. Also I hope that Carson comes back from that ACL injury and that Jerry Narron will steer the Reds to a good season this year.

Wait, no, it isn't January of 2006 anymore is it. (my mistake)

There is nothing new here, Shaun Smith told us nothing we probably didn't already know. This sounds like the same exact stuff we heard after the playoff game. Let's move on.

Chad Johnson = Carl Pickens

If what Hue is saying now is all there is to it, then he and others would have said it at the time. This drama wouldn't still be leaking out in drips and drabs 2 years later. All those saying "it's over, let's move on" aren't paying attention to the way this team has fallen apart since 85's little hissy fit.

Who cares? We don't own the team. It's none of our business what goes on in the locker room. This is ancient history. Get over it!

More stupid past drama about a losing team, and a lousy organization.

Flush it down with Mike Brown.

It is very appropriate that I was making a baloney sandwich when I heard Jackson's side of the story.

Forget about the "did he punch 'em or didn't he" stuff. The thing that really torques me off about all this is Johnson's selfishness. Huge playoff game, first in 14 or 15 years, against PITTSBURGH, Carson's down with a devastating injury that could end his career, coaches and players are scrambling to prepare for the most important second half since the last Super Bowl - and what's Chad doing? Crying because he's not gonna get the ball. Not only crying but going totally nuts to the point that the locker room turns to chaos. Makes me sick. Way to go, Ocho Me-o.

People need to realize that Chad is a winner that wants to win as bad as anyone else. Talent, ethics, stamina and mere vigor is what drives this man. I dare anyone on this blog to challenge him. He will beat you in any competition whether it would be football or chess. The man is a weapon of choice around the NFL.

i can not believe how alot of bengal fans react to rumors. the amazing thing is how alot of fans reacted to the d-lineman stories and jumping to conclusions. sounds like to me they did a good job not being premature in announsing the trades. they also did a good job in not spending too much money like cleveland did 100 million on d linemen we will still beat the browns. we have alot of draft picks wait and see then you can judge

True, he is still a weapon in the NFL, and one of the best WR's in the game today, but to say he wants to win as bad as anyone else is a flat out LIE!!! Yes, he wants to win, as long as he gets his touches and face time on TV...He is one of THE most selfish players in NFL history. He doesn't care about anything except "OCHO" and expecting EVERY play to involve around "85". Case is proven in the franchises BIGGEST game in 16 seasons, vs Steelers in Wildcard Playoff Game. The Bengals are up 17-14 and in total control of the game and have dominated the first half, without Palmer and how cared about being up and winning is "CJ"?????....He's throwing a tantrum because he doesn't know how he's gonna get the ball the rest of the game!!! Who cares that Cincy's ahead and put on a dominant 1st half performance, lets worry about how "Chad" is gonna get his touches. Yeah, sounds like a guy who's a winner and cares about winning so much.

I am so sick of Shaun Smith. Another fat lineman that is bitter the Bengals didn't give him the crazy money the Browns did.
