Two-year deal for WR Chatman
INDIANAPOLIS -- Wide receiver Antonio Chatman has agreed to terms on a two-year contract to return to the Bengals.
Agent Mark Mersel said the Bengals, particularly head coach Marvin Lewis and wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard, have been very supportive of Chatman and are encouraged by his renewed health. Groin and hamstring injuries limited Chatman to 16 games and one start in the past two seasons. He has 22 receptions, 19 in 2007, with the Bengals. He also returned 18 punts last season for a 5.2-yard average.
-- Mersel also represents former Bengals linebacker Marcus Wilkins, who signed last year with Atlanta. Wilkins was released by the Falcons last week and would be interested in returning to Cincinnati, where he was a leading special teams tackler.
"It's a natural fit," Mersel said of a possible Wilkins return.
-- Also today, agent Kennard McGuire met with Bengals negotiators about a contract extension for wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. There was nothing to report, McGuire said. ... Meetings between the Bengals and agents for safety Madieu Williams (Friday) and linebacker Landon Johnson (Saturday) appear to be set. Both players can be unrestricted free agents a week from Friday.

I think re-upping with Chatman was a good move as long as it came cheap. He has to prove he can stay healthy first and foremost. It's nice that we'll have some consistency returning punts (if he stays healthy).
As far as the Wes Welker comparison, I'm not so sure. He did flash a few signs of brilliance, but I think he has to be on the field more before you can fairly make that comparison. This move was made more for the punt game in my opinion.
I love the idea that they're trying to re-sign T.J. now. I think it's an absolute must. Hopefully we can get him at at hometown discount while working the contract to benefit both him and the Bengals in their search for an IMPROVED defense. We don't want to spend a bunch of this years cap room on him because of the bigger issues on defense that we have.
Although, if he has another huge year in 08 (like 07), how high will the price tag go? I think the contract needs to be set-up very strategically to maximize the ROI on T.J. while being able improve our defense.
What do the rest of you guys/gals think?

Are you kidding me,this guy is a total waste of time!Always injured & injury prone. Not Impressed with this signing.
Mark please let me know when Mike Brown & cohorts are going to step down as the GM's.Now that would be red letter day.
My understanding is that in lieu of a signing bonus, Chatman signed for a new whirlpool and fresh towels in the training room...
When are we going to learn to stop paying players that contribute little to our football team?
If we let Chatman go, he wouldn't be on the field for another NFL team....yet we give him TWO years.
This could also happen with Tab Perry and Adam Kieft who are completely replaceable with younger, cheaper players.
Wow! Two years, they should get a good 2 or 3 games out of him. Waste of ink. I have argued over the years that Mike Brown is not cheap, he just doesn't know how to spend. I wouldn't waste my Pepsi Points on him.
This move epitomizes the shortcomings of the personnell department. First, you draft a guy you can never rely on (C. Henry) and basically waste a roster spot on him. Second, the way the Chad situation was recently handled leaves another roster spot at the position unknown (wheather he shows up to really play this season, or shows up at all). Third, you 'fill in' these potential gaps with Chatman? This guy hardly ever plays. I'm sure he's thinking OMG, I can't believe I'm back, and laughing all the way to the bank.
They would have been better off drafting someone, quite honestly. Give me Glenn Holt any day over this guy.
