Laundry list

-- A couple of readers have commented that I reported a few weeks ago that linebacker Ahmad Brooks was close to getting back on the field. That's what I was told by people inside the Bengals organization. Obviously, Brooks' groin injury is more serious that originally described.

-- Cut the garbage with the name calling and insults on this blog when you post a comment. I don't care what you call me. But be civil with each other. Partake in spirited give and take and discussion, but you weaken your case when you resort to personal attacks. You can do better than that.

-- My favorite road trip of the season is coming up soon, Baltimore. The train ride in the BWI is effortless; gee, real public transportation. And the pre-game atmosphere around M&T Bank Stadium -- leftover, Baltimore football fans tell me, from the era of the Colts at Memorial Stadium -- is the best in the NFL.

-- I like Tony Dungy a lot. I like what the Colts franchise has done in Indianapolis. But I wish Baltimore, like Cleveland, had been able to keep the colors, name, uniform and history in Maryland and make Indiana start over again.

-- Speaking of Baltimore, Oriole Park at Camden Yards is still the ultimate in the new era of baseball parks, even 15 years after it opened. It reminds me of what the Reds ballpark could have been at Broadway Commons.

-- Wide receiver Chad Johnson continues to mind his manners and play it low key during the week. He's behaving. If only the defense were as productive as Chad.

-- Fellow wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is well on his way toward being this team's MVP. He belongs in the Pro Bowl.

-- Here's my lyric of the month. It's Bruce Springsteen's "Long Walk Home" from his new "Magic" album. It's one of his most compelling rockers in some time. There's an element of disillusion and lost hope in the narrator as he visits his hometown -- but also a sense of optimism and faith that what has been lost there and nationally can be regained.

Here everybody has a neighbor
Everybody has a friend
Everybody has a reason to begin again

My father said "Son, we're lucky in this town,
It's a beautiful place to be born.
It just wraps its arms around you,
Nobody crowds you and nobody goes it alone

You know that flag flying over the courthouse
Means certain things are set in stone
Who we are, what we'll do and what we won't."

Thank you for your comment about the name calling and insults. Adults should be above such childish behavior.

I think a lot of people posting on these message board may not be adults. haha

I've never been to Baltimore but I've heard from other people also that it is about as good an atmosphere for football as there is out there.

Man it's too bad about Ahmad Brooks. I think he would make quite a difference in this defense if he was healthy.

He's really only played 1 game right?

I see another loss in Buffalo by more then 7 points...Bills 27-17 I'll say.

The offense is going to have to be great for the Bengals to win any road games from here on out.

Hey FOOL, are you calling me a name-calling jerk? You're an idiot.

Having lived in Baltimore when the baseball stadium was built the big difference between the baseball stadium there and The Reds stadium is it was build next to the inner harbor which was already deleveloped very nicely. They moved from a crappy neighborhood to a nice one. What people wanted was the Reds to move from a great location to a crappy neighborhood. That would have never worked.

Mark,
THANKS so much for addressing the name-callers and childish insults that have exploded on this blog.
You're right, it's hard to take a person's argument seriously when it's expressed at a junior high school level.
Hopefully, those who continue to spew juvenile rants will be either ignored by the adults on this blog or simply deleted.

Ahmad Brooks,Ahmad Brooks,Ahmad Brooks. I do not understand the concern/fascination with a player that has done ziltch for this franchise. Even when healthy in preseason, he was ineffective. Anthony Schlegel is the kind of hard-nose, blue collar guy this team needs. Not some training room hero with "potential".

You have obviously never worn a Bengals jersey to M&T Bank stadium. Having gone to that game for the last 10 yrs I would have to say that they do have a few great/friendly fans and some of the most obnoxious bunch of idiots in the NFL (smearing cupcakes on our $200 seats at half time, having fathers tell their kids to throw food at us, on and on...). They start each game in B-more with having the crowd repeat "Don't be a Jerk!" There is a reason they have to do that.
Traveling from D.C. to see the Jets game the other week I could not help but feel proud about how our fans treated the the Jets fans. Very different experience.

Well intentioned blog here. NO name calling, be nice and civil at all times.

Just like the Bengals team, nice and civil. Football is a nice, easy and civil sport, and our team reflects those values.

Winning is not important, it's being nice on the field that is. Buffalo will not be nice, and win their game.

A couple about Ahmad Brooks... First, since training camp when he was announced as starting MLB, I have read nothing but bad things about him and how Marvin should be fired for starting him, now all of the sudden, people miss him? What is the deal Cincy fans, do you always have to complain about something. Secondly, he is a rookie*, although he was plucked last year in the supp. draft, he is just now maturing to be a rookie and he will only continue to grow on the field as a player and off the field as an individual. Thirdly, Anthony Schlegel is NOT, I repeat, NOT the answer. He is a good backup that can stick his hat on a couple balls, but he just isn't on the level of Brooks. Fourthly, Marvin Lewis and the "training staff" need to give us, the fans, an honest evaluation of what is wrong with Ahmad. I have never seen a groin pull last for 8+ weeks. And Lastly, if things aren't looking good for him to play, put him on PUP or IR, he doesnt need to take up a roster spot at LB when we have our best defensive player (Geathers) playing a new position.

Tony - I agree with you. I head up to Baltimore for the Bengals game every year and get absolutely abused. A few years ago when Carson Palmer lead the big 4th quarter comeback, I got pelted with about 10 plastic beer bottles after Shayne Graham kicked the winning field goal.

I have been to a lot of Bengals road games and Baltimore fans are the biggest group of drunk idiots I have ever seen.

Mark,

I just think the level of frustration is so high with the bengal fans and people are now coming to realize that the bengals are going absolutely nowhere this year!

Bengal fans just think there is always next year! How many times have you heard that!

Mark,
I agree -- Keep it nice boys. As for the Bengals if we can just win a few games until Henry gets back and the Defense gets healthy...We could be a real force if we slide into the playoffs. The real test is this Sunday with Rudi. If he still can't gain yards...he must be put on the bench and Watson should run. If he is effective...then let him get his reps. We are not out of this yet...although it is a sudden death situtation...if we lose the season is over.

Mark agree the name calling is out of hand, and I am guilty to some extent. Question is if comment moderation is enabled why/how do name calling post ever make it on the blog?

Mark - Don't you (or whoever monitors the blog) have the option to not post comments that you feel are out of line? If you do, you can refuse to allow those comments, and hopefully frustrate the people who come on here and abuse others.

On another note, I've never been to a game at the Camden Yards, but the best of the new stadiums that I've seen so far is Miller Park in Milwaukee. Wide concourses, plenty of amenities, etc. It's just a nice environment to watch a ballgame.

I agree, name calling and showing the city and the nation how stupid you are reflects badly on all the other educated and die hard Bengals fans this city has. Talking trash on a blog? Are you serious?

As for Brooks. I am in agreement that he hasn't done much, if anything at the pro level, but his potential is the reason we all want to see the big fella on the field. He should be able to help this defense and it's frustrating to watch us get pounded EVERY week by the opposing offense.

Lastly, the way Marvin treats the media and in a way the fans has got to go. He seldom answers questions honestly and never without a smirk or slyness about it. A groin pull and out for 8 weeks!?!? Are you serious? Stephen Jackson was listed as having a "torn groin" and only missed 4 weeks as a running back. Is this training and medical staff misdiagnosing every injury on this team? It's getting to the point where the reds are with Kremchek, and that's where NO ONE returns after going under his knife. Get these guys healthy, or put them on IR and bring in more waiver wire guys that can actually play!

Mark,
I unfortunately spent two years of my life living in Baltimore. Hated it. I agree that Camden Yards is one of baseball's best. But as far as the football atmosphere being one of the NFL's best, I completely disagree. Tony and Anon 8:22 are right. I know you don't want name calling on your blog anymore but the nicest thing I can say about the Ravens fans is that they are complete drunken idiots.

I agree the name calling has to stop. People who do that are just a bunch of wankers.

It is agreed! Name calling and such must stop on this blog. We are only mere mortals and throwing each other under the bus only keeps the driver busy. Concerned here! good to be back. My solution to the Bengals is not to watch the game but rather go to a local disc golf course and throw some mighty D. It can be quite enjoyable escpecally if you're with your favorite chums Philly Cheese and Freddy Salsa...I'm still trying to master the Windmill Toss.. Get back to me Philly Cheese! Got to go .. must take dirty shirts to laundry to get ironed. As always.. Let those sweet babies soar...I'm out.

When I typed "12:24 PM" I was being facetious and I didn't think you'd post it. You might want to remove it as that's pretty rude!
