Upon further review ...

... Marvin Lewis said this afternoon that he would kick the field goal again.

Trailing 14-3 late in the second quarter, the Bengals were fourth-and-1 from the Steelers 2-yard line. Lewis initially was going to run a play. Then he called timeout and asked for a measurement. Then he sent Shayne Graham in to kick a 20-yard field, pulling the Bengals to within 14-6. Then the Steelers scored a touchdown at the end of a 67-yard line to go up 21-6 at the half.

The Steelers won 24-13.

"I still feel we're going to possess the ball three more times, by taking the points," Lewis said. "We have an opportunity to stop them, get the ball back before halftime then have the ball coming out in the third quarter. So I'm probably going to still kick the field goal at that point with where we were in the game. It was a good yard that way. I have to go with how I'm getting information. We weren't sure, we had a little bit of rundown on the play clock because they didn't get the ball spotted exactly right away. If you look at the tape, once I called timeout, it was a little bit further. But again, I have to go with what is there. It's easy to look back on it now, particularly after they score a touchdown, and think that makes a difference. ... It was important to get points."

So on fourth-and-1 you'd do it again, same way?

"Yes."

On Sunday, in his post-game news conference, Lewis mentioned the decision in his opening statement -- before he could be asked about it by a reporter -- and said: "In hindsight, we should have gone for it on fourth down rather than take the points. I didn't anticipate them driving down and getting a touchdown before halftime. Since we got the ball in the second half, I thought it was important to put up points at that point in the football game. Looking back on it, if we had scored a touchdown, it might have been more significant. But that is the decision I made based on that. We dug ourselves such a hole in the first half."

INJURIES: Lewis said defensive tackle John Thornton had a stinger, was "better today," and "we'll see Wednesday" how he is for the game Sunday at Buffalo.

Safety Herana-Daze Jones, a major special teams contributor, injured his shoulder and is being examined today. And tailback Kenny Watson suffered a concussion, which "subsided today," and Watson is undergoing normal procedures.

Lewis did not anticipate that right tackle Willie Anderson would play Sunday at Buffalo but would have a better chance to play the following week at Baltimore.

PLAYOFFS: The Bengals are 2-5 and have an uphill climb to make the playoffs. Are the playoffs still the goal for the team?

"We can’t worry. The playoffs are possible. The playoffs are there. The playoffs are not out of reach," Lewis said. "But we don’t need to worry about them. We need to worry about win number three in Buffalo this week. That’s what’s important. This is the game that counts. We don’t need to look ahead. If we take care of ourselves, we’ll be fine. And at this point, we can still do that. Let’s take care of what we have to take care of, and do our jobs."

Just what color is the sky in Marvin's universe? His comment that "I still feel we're going to possess the ball three more times, by taking the points," only makes sense if he truly believed that his defense could stop the Steelers' offense. And anyone watching Sunday's game (except, apparently, for Marvin) should have known that the likelihood of the Bengals defense -- the sure-fire panacea for opponents' ailing offenses -- stopping anyone were somewhere between slim and none.

Mark,
For the first time I have to admit I've lost confidence in Marvin. It is one thing to admit a mistake about the field goal...it is another to look at the tape and change your mind. Today he said he would do it again...I think yesterday he lost his team leader -- Carson -- and the team. I am calling for Mike Brown to sell the Bengals to someone who wants to win AND make money. It is a sad day to be a Bengal. :(

Marvin's game management is a disaster right now. It seems like he's lost the media, the team, and after yesterday's response, the fans as well. I don't know how things went negative so quickly, but this is starting to feel like watching the Bengals of old.

what has been the common denominator for the Bengals losing year after year after year? can you say MIKE BROWN?

Mike, you have made tons of money; do the fans of Cincinnati a favor and step down; sell the team to someone who knows football; your dad has to be rolling over in his grave.

i think that the only way we will get mike brown's attention is to stage a boycott and stop him from making money.

WhetHer the decision to kick the field goal was correct is not what people should be concerned with today. Marvin making the decision yesterday....then after the game saying they should have gone for it....and now today saying that kicking the field goal was the correct play ...SHOWS THAT HE IS INDECISIVE AND CANNOT MAKE A GAME DECISION...and you wonder why the team looks confused. Attitude and confidence go hand in hand.

What do OTHER teams do in when they NEED to keep pace with a more dominant team? Take some risk and go for the first down, touchdown, and the upset.
I still watch OTHER teams so I can see how football is to be played.

Intensity, intensity, intensity...

Look at the two model franchises in the NFL. The Pats and the Colts. They have 4 things in common, outstanding ownership, elite GM, strong coaching and a true franchise QB. Cincy has Palmer, I thought Marvin could be that type of coach but now I have doubts. Ownership and GM/scouting will always be an issue here. Very frustrating situation and I live in Edmonton, AB. Couldn't imagine being a big fan in Cincy. I would go crazy.

Marvin, you became a steeler yesterday! Your choice to believe in Pittsburgh more than Cincinnati, lost not only the game but the confidence of your team, fans and even, confidence in yourself. Be a man, and admit your mistake, take the responsibility with the consequences, and ask for forgiveness and move on to the next game. If not, move on to the next city! If a team's coach can't believe in them, why should they?

If the Bengals were 4-2 - kick the field goal. Unfortunately they were 2-4. They should've went for it. The season is practically over now, why not take the risk? Marvin, you did a heck of a job rebuilding this team from the basement of the NFL. You did that by an "attitude" adjustment. Do all of us a favor and bring that attitude back you brought with you from Baltimore.

Hey depressed bengal's fan, Do you really think Mike Brown cares about the Bungles losing? He's got one of the greatest money making teams in ALL of sports. He doesn't care if hometown fans show up to the game because he'll sell tickets to Brown, Steeler, or Raven fans or even once in awhile to Colt or Titan fans. His team is sitting logistically perfect in the NFL with all of those fans within driving distance to Paul Brown Stadium.

He's a business GENIUS. He suckered Cincinnati into a 30 year guarenteed sell out lease and doesn't have to do anything but sign a couple of star players with a mediocre coaching staff and watch the money roll in..

HAHAHAHA The Bungles will be LOSERS FOREVER..HAHAHAHA

After driving 50 yards, One yard to go on the TWO, in the JUNGLE - your home stadium, GO FOR THE DAMN TOUCHDOWN! I cannot believe Marvin says he would do it again. I think he is losing his mind along with everything else he is losing.
Has Marvin been seeing what the heck is going on with his defense? They couldn't stop St. X from scoring, or Turpin for godsakes!
This defense is young & dumb! I am a lifelong Bengal fan and the utmost optimist and I have to tell you, this season is bringing me down...way down! We were supposed to Compete for a championship!
Good teams overcome injuries, but we can't seem to overcome anything and that includes our coaching

SO SAD, What is going to happen is the team might beat the bills then the record will be 3 & 5, henry will return and then Carson will have 3 recievers to throw to and the Bengals might go 6 & 2 for a total of 9&7 just miss the payoffs again because they will out score the other teams as the defense sucks. So Mike " THE MORAN "Brown will say wow Marvin the "THE DEFENSIVE GENIUS ?????? " has done a great job so we have to put up with another year of nothing to look forward to because he will probably use the 1st round pick for , hummmm let me see maybe a trainer or punter , he would never be so dumb and use the 1st 3 picks for defensive players, like linemen who can rush the passer and stop the run, so PLEASE " MIKE THE MORAN " PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sell the team and we know you wont so PLEASE fire this so called "DEFENSIVE GENIUS " and hire Marty or someone that does know something about coaching and last thing is Chad dropped 2 balls that should have been caught so maybe he is nothing more than that other reciever that goes by TO, he also shoots his mouth off alot and he also drops balls when the team needs the catch the most, and last but not least I have 2 tickets home game and guess what " I am not going and I offered to my neighbor for free" all he did was laugh , so what can I say.

Ok? Mark when the "coach" has his news conferance on wed could you plz ask him what part of the first 2 Pitt 70+ drives did he see the hope that his D could stop them? Also could you ask why a ROOKIE head coach had the nuts to go for it on 4th down with a 11pt lead but he didn't down by 11? Could you also ask him why he felt Pitt would give him enough poss to make the score up since Pitt hasn't done that in ohh.....30+ yrs. I don't know maybe I'm crazy but don't they play keep away if they have the lead? Also could you ask why we have training camp cause this team needs to goto pop warner to learn how to tackle! Could you also ask him if he now is part of the culture he supposed to have moved away from this frachise, I know we have injuries but didn't the colts lose both starting DT's, both starting CB's, a starting LB and their backup RB in FA, what is there rec? Coaches!!!! what coaches? The best yr's a player has is befor our coaching staff ruins their talent! Why is Leon Hall a better option in the slot than Ratliff was? oh because Ratliff had heart and cared about playing time. We should have known better how many "NFL ready"...lol shut don corners drop out the top 10? hmmm? I heard john Thorton got a stinger...too bad he didn't get arrested for being a thief! just a few ?'s for the ole ball coach!

Why do you hate the people of Cincinnati so much ? Nice scam though, this whole Marvin Loser era. I wonder how many times you can pull it and keep the next generation coming ! I hope todays guinea pigs are passing this message on to them: "Don't buy Mike Browns garbage anymore".

4:48 Anon,
Great thoughts! Marvin's decision to play it safe with the field goal speaks VOLUMES about the "go for the win" attitude that is now lacking.
I hate to 2nd guess a coach's decision after the fact, since we know what happened. But -- if they could have gone for it and been stopped -- at least they would have given it a shot.
I, like many others, applauded the new attitude that Marvin brought to the Bengals when he 1st arrived here. I think the team leaders also felt that way.
I have resisted the "Marvin sucks" crowd. But after the past 2 years of mediocre drafts, innumerable hamstring and groin injuries, questionable personal behavior, I see the same old Bengals.

Anon 4:48,
My thoughts exactly.
Also, when Marvin 1st came here, he instilled a "new" attitude. The Bengals developed a swagger, especially on offense. They went for the win. They took what they wanted, no matter what the defense was "giving" them.
Now, in a MUST win game with 4th and 1 from the 2 yard line, behind by 11 points, the offense is stopped -- not by the Steelers, but by the Bengals coach.
The Marvin hired by the Bengals would have gone for it. I'm sure the team leaders wanted to go for it. If the Steelers stop it, OK. At least we were going for the win!
I have resisted the "Marvin sucks" crowd. But after 2 years of mediocre drafts, innumerable groin and hamstring injuries (preventable), poor personal behavior, and terrible clock/game management decisions -- the "new" attitude seems to have been replaced by the "old Bengals'" attitude.
Because of the previous drafts, I didn't see the Bengals any better this year than 8-8. But this?
I hope Marvin can still be the answer. But right now I wonder if he isn't as good as he initially appeared to be. Hope I'm wrong.

Don't blame Mike Brown: The NFL has a salary cap. All teams spend about the same on their players. No NY Yankees in the NFL. Brown let Marvin Lewis take more control over this team than any other coach he's hired. Marvin Lewis has one winning season in five years. Marvin is not a bad coach, he's just not as good as his competition. He's also picked some players with bad attitudes and some important players have become injured. The bad attitudes were his fault, but the injuries weren't. The Bengals were a bad team before Marvin and they are in the bottom third of the NFL now. It's obvious now that the head coach of Baltimore was responsible for the great defense there and not Marvin Lewis.

The one thing we can do to get Mike Brown's attention is to show him who pays the bills around here. All you season ticket holders out there are going to have to bite the bullet in three weeks and not go to the game.... Let's all go down and tailgate like always, but when game time rolls around, let's keep on playing corn hole, and grilling out, and drinking $2.00 beer not $6.00 beer. Let's let the rest of the nation watching the game that day know what we think of Mr. Money Hungry, Mr. 8 and 8, Mr. Ha I Suckered All You Idiots In To Paying For My Stadium..... I think you get the point. Let's see what he thinks of a half full stadium instead of a record attendance. It is up to you "SEASON TICKET HOLDER" to put your foot down, enough is enough... No selling or giving your tickets to anyone.... We can use them to start the grill. All this aside, I'm with "DEPRESSED BENGAL FAN", PLEEEEAAAAASSSSEEE Mike Brown...Sell the team to some one who gives a damn....!!!!

Mark
Will you ask Marvin why he went for it against Carolina last year and "saved the season," but this year thinks the attack mentality won't serve him well? His comments today reveal that he still thinks like a coach with a good defense and a weak offense, which is quite odd for an intelligent man and successful coach.

Apparently we can pretty much agree - Mike Brown is killing us! He's living in Indian Hill, keeping a very low profile and the family is getting richer by say $40-50 million a year (net worth).

What's the problem??

He doesn't give a hoot about Bengal fans.

Go Rooney's!!

Whoa, what a train wreck this season has turned out to be so far. Inept coaching and a team with no identity on defense. And an owner that could probably care less, and why should he if you think about it in business terms. They'll probably finish on a little run of wins and everyone will be fooled into 'wait until next year'. Or they could completely tank, who knows? Call me a fair weather fan, but I'm sure glad I haven't thrown a bunch of ticket, food, beer and parking money to this team. I guess if you do, just take it for face value - go down to have a good time and watch the visiting teams execute proper football.

Pleading with Mike Brown isn't going to help. He does not care about winning. He only cares about being profitable. We went through this already before the Marvin Lewis era, which is just a big hoax on the people of Cincinnati and Bengals fans everywhere. A con job. That's what it is. One fluke year of winning amid almost two decades of utter futility and embarrassing play... and the stadium is sold out for the forseeable future. We need a sucka free football team!

I am so pleased to see others realizing that Marvin is a problem. He cannot control his players and makes terrible decisions. 10 men on the field in a critical play after a timeout for a challenge. 4th and 1 on the 2 and he kicks a field goal. The only time that should be an option is if it's the end of the game and you need 2 or less to WIN the game. Also, I don't know who makes the draft decisions but they are a joke. Everyone knows that Cincinnati has always been short on defense and linebackers. Stop drafting corners, safetys, RBs and receivers and get some strength! Marvin has done nothing to improve this team's defense.

at 10/29/2007 9:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

How can anyone say they are just now losing confidence in Marvin? I challenge anyone to name a game decision he's made that has positively effected the outcome of a game (for the Bengals). The man simply has no game instincts or talent evaluation ability. Worse, he treats his fans and the media like idiots. I live in Chicago and he would be absolutely crucified by the media here if he acted the way he does. Also, could he please defend his comment that having 10 men on the field had no impact on the steelers first touchdown. My interpretation whoever was missing had no chance to get to Rothelslidoaiburgherwerwer, so it was just as if he had been on the field.

I have watched you Bengals fans since 1977 and the sad part is that you will continue buying tickets and supporting Mike Browns family regardless of where the Bengals stand, or how many games they lose, you will continue to go to the games. You really have no right to complain until you stop supporting Mike Brown and his family. Marvin Lewis is nothing but an extension of Mike Brown, Players don't respect him. If they did, they would play like the patriots, they have the talent, just don't have the coaching. Marvin Lewis cannot get his team motivated for a game, he's a smartass, you can't tell him anything because hs is going to do it his way or it's the highway, right or wrong. Listen to some of his press conferences, the way he answers, without an answer.

I use to be one of Marvin's biggest fans and now I have zero trust and confidence in him to guide this team to be anything but average. He's made a mockery of the team off the field and now on the field. As the previous post stated he is indecisive about the call even after he made it, who could possibly follow a leaderless leader? Here are the facts Marvin, our offense is the strenght of the team and they needed a vote of confidence from you they didn't get it. If by chance they came up short on 4th down the Steelers have to go 99 yards in 2:30. Or ponder this, if you were so confident in your D we could have stopped them inside the 10 and forced a punt from the end zone and had great field position to attempt to score before the half. If we get the touchdown on 4th down it's a win...if we don't the D your so confident in steps up and makes a play and we get it back to try and score before half...thats a win. Kick a field goal, demoralize your offense and fan base, give the ball to the steelers on the 38 after the kickoff...those are all losers as are you apparently. Atleast i respected you when you admited to making a mistake then you retract that, I now have zero respect for you as a coach and that seems to be the same amount your players have for you.

Marvin Lewis is part of the problem, Mike Brown will always be a large part of the problem, but what we are seeing is the results of the character we draft! We have done nothing but draft a bunch of spoiled punks! They have their millions in signing bonuses and garanteed contracts! Look at how many have been arrested! Do you really think they has any desire at all of being a team? All they care about is themselves! They won't work hard, they won't play hard, they don't care if they win! They are standing in line at the bank behind Mike Brown laughing at every fan that buys a ticket or a jersey and saying keep it coming. Look at the type of character the colts and Pat's have on their teams. Until we start drafting players with character we are destind to live in the 90's forever! Marvin quit drafting on potential talent and get some kids that have the discipline and character to want to put the work in to becoming a great TEAM!!!

Kenny Irons, Hall, and the Perrys have unimpeachable character.

Character alone gets you nowhere in this league.

Durability, talent, and time (for those four) are the big variables. Next year if they're all healthy, the team will be better.

Of course your grandma could play a better DL or LB than anyone on the Bengals' roster. Drafting ALL DL and LB next year would be wise.

Of course the bozos won't do anything that's wise.

He is not playing to his strength his offense. What makes sense is to allow your offense to control the clock and using 4th down when neccessary. The defense is under manned other teams are scoring no matter what part of the feild they take over and controling the clock at the same time. If we turn the ball over on downs at times the other team might score but it will take less time and get the ball back in our hands sooner. Our defense must have a bend but do not break attitude hold others to a FG and allow our offense to do what they do best score TD.desperate times call for desperate measures. Our defense and specials teams are not healthly nor deep. Marvin must realize this and go away from what the book says to do in certain situations. that is the sign of a great coach know how to put your team in the best possible position to win.Our schedule is much eassier the rest of the way and if we can get some of our troops back on the feild I agree playoffs are not out of the picture. Marvin please give us a chance to be successful play agressive football till your defense is healthly!!

What's interesting is that there is no mention in any of Marvin's many comments about "the call," that he saw it in any context other that than that particular game. It was clearly an opportunity to define his team for the rest of the season, and he made the choice to show he had no confidence in them.

I would think that most people would recognize that the decision would have greater impact than on 3 or 6 points or even the outcome of one game. In that context, there was no choice, you have to go for it (even if you have no confidence) because the alternative is telling your team that you think they are losers.

That obviously escaped Marvin's thought process at the time.

Boo hoo hoo. Dang bro, stop crying so hard or take it to Oprah & Dr. Phil.
I love bashing Bengals fans cause I live in Cincy, and I have to listen to the new generation of WWE non-football knowledge having fans talk about Chad's celebrations and listen to that stupid Fear da Tiger song on my radio (I still get misty eyed with laughter at that one). If I lived in the Burgh and was a GALs fan I would get sick of Steeler fans. Except it's worse here because of the idiocy of believing in and supporting a team that is anti-fan. If you do not like it, then start pushing your team's ownership to do better. Rather than vote for sweetheart stadium deals (Pittsburghers voted down the first Steelers stadium deal, and not because they aren't good fans, but because they used Cincy's debacle as an example. Oh, and by the way, The Rooneys never threatened to leave the city if they didn't get their way. Stoopid Cincy)
I love to come on here and make fun of idiot fans. but you're right, it is getting far too easy. It is like fish in a barrel and is losing its luster. You guys need a few more wins so I can hear fans start talking Superbowl again this year on here. Since I know GALs fans are so sensitive, I wil scale it back a little now. I mean, it would be gratuitous for me to kick you all while your team falls apart, AGAIN.
PS I have two kids, many friends, lots of hobbies, and am in graduate school for my masters. Stop whining and get used to it cause I'll keep coming back til they ban me. bee+ ooo+ ch.

Sunday prediction - Bills 27 Bengals 23, they always lose in Buffalo and the team finally implodes the week of the return of the season savior, Chris Henry.

Marshawn Lynch will have the first 100+ yard day of his young career and either Buffalo QB will look better than adequate.

Bengals' defense surrendered 31 points to the Jets, Buffalo 3 in a road game. Buffalo's D will be ready to take away the deep routes and force the Bengals into a possession game like the ones in Seattle and against Pittsburgh.

Mark,
You and Lap are the only writers I have confidence in, and seem to have common sense. I just wanted to say thanks. *As for the playoffs, yeah, Miami hasn't been mathematically eliminated yet either. There's always next year, and Mike Brown will always be "The Grinch that stole Football."

Yeah okay buddy, and I am president of the universe. You can tell by the way you choose to express your thought in all your previous posts that you are a product of 8th grade public education at best.

A day in your life given you past post are, playing video games on line, watching hours of WWE and monitoring blogs all day.

Does anyone out there really think MIKEEBOY would bring in a stern, disciplinarian coach which would also upstage MIKEEBOY to the media and NFL.......Get real

Marvin deserves some blame, yes. But I think he's gotta do something about his coordinators. Bresnehan needs to be fired. I'm sorry if your D is constantly out of position and can't tackle, someone has to take the blame. And the D has definitely gotten worse under Chuck. Plus, Brat has some suspect play calling the last few games. Sunday was better, but I still think he needs to go.

I say hire Mike Nolan for the D once he is fired by the Niners, and promote Ken Zampese for the O.

I ASSUME, Lewis is talking this year's playoffs? Is Lewis also ASSUMING that his defense will over-night get better and learn to stop the opponent? Is Lewis also ASSUMING that his high-powered offense will somehow come to life and start scoring? Lewis has proven the old adage that when you assume you make an ASS out of U and ME! No more for me, I'm done.

Lynch gains 250+ yards, Buffalo wins 38-33 (Bengals score in garbage time to make it look closer than it is).

Mo Lewis is horribly undertalented.

Can't wait to see WR Henry come back against Baltimore.

At least beating Baltimore twice this season will be satisfying...the Ravens have such a crappy offense...it's possible!

I was reading these blogs this morning and found the blog left on 10/30/07 @ 2:12 interesting. It was about the fine character of the Colts & Patriots. I do agree the that the Colts have coaches & players with character. But the Patriots? Come on, this is the same team that earlier this season was "caught" cheating and has probably done it several times in the past and only gets a handslap from the NFL. Tom Brady has how many illegitimate kids now? Character? I don't think so. Just real good football players.
