Look, I have no beef with marijuana...it's illegal because it's foreign - unlike the familiarity of paying British sailors with gin and the colonists raising tobacco, it's some strange weed from S. America. However, the green herb is a big red light in the NFL and the NBA. Substance usage is widespread in America, from cigarettes to alcohol to marijuana to prescription drugs. Using to get a small high in and of itself is not an issue. Conversely, substance ABUSE is also widespread in America. Sure, there are plenty of people who have taken a half day for a hangover, but the guys who fail drug tests don't have the discipline not to smoke during the season. The guys who get DUIs and are arrested for bar fights don't have the maturity to arrange a ride, say no, or drink in a safe environment. I'm sure good ol' boy from Columbia, MO Justin Smith had a 6 or 12-pack from time to time (in fact, I know this from friends who have drank with him). I would not be at all surprised to learn Willie Anderson or Levi Jones might have taken a few bong rips over the summer of their college careers (unsubstantiated) - I see nothing wrong with either action. If you look at the guys who get in trouble from their substance ABUSE issues (Pacman, Henry, Brooks, Thurman, Steinbach - how drunk do you have to be to get in trouble on the OH river?!), they tend to be the ones who have repeat issues. Occasionally, it's a one-time deal (Steinbach), but usually, it's a pattern of excess. The Bengals would do well to steer clear of these issues in the future - if a guy got a DUI in college, he drank too much, and he's a threat to overdo it one night in the pros. A pothead who gets in bowling alley fights in high school (Randy Moss) might just keep on smokin' through his pro career and cause some trouble there, too. When you're intoxicated, character isn't the issue - state of mind is. If Marvin and Mike want to pick "character guys," they have to look no farther than past indicators of someone who is likely to "step out of character" with excessive enjoyment of substances - crossing from usage to abuse. $100 says Brooks would have to be drunk or high to deck a woman in the eye rather than simply calling her a few names and walking back in the house.

It's always Groundhog Day in Bengal-dom. Nothing ever changes. This has to be a bad dream.
