3-year deal for DE Fanene

INDIANAPOLIS -- High-energy defensive end Jonathan Fanene has reached agreement on a three-year contract to remain with the Bengals.

Fanene, the team’s seventh-round draft pick in 2005, played in a career-high 14 games last season. He had six total tackles, including one sack in the season finale at Miami.

He has played in 21 games with one start and has 14 career tackles.

Fanene, slowed in his first two seasons by hamstring injuries, was eligible to be a restricted free agent. NFL teams have until Thursday to offer tenders to restricted free agents. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, offensive tackle Adam Kieft and wide receiver Tab Perry are the Bengals’ other restricted free agents.

Coach Marvin Lewis was asked today about Fanene and fellow defensive end Frostee Rucker.

"Both guys have ability to play," Lewis said. "Fanene got his opportunities last year and did a good job."

Jeeezus! Could a team ever prove that they don't know what they're doing.

Who was the guard that they let go to Cleveland last year? He like played about a million more games than Fanane. Is there a black white issue in Cincnnati?

Good signing.

Hes a guy that can play DE, but is also big and strong enough to play DT.

He should get a chance to compete for more playing time if Justin Smith is gone.

After this draft and a free-agent or two,he probably won't make the team.

Anon 8:17 The gaurd that went to cleveland is one of the highest paid lineman in the NFL now. It was the estimation of the team that he was to expensive, and that the depth at o-line (Whitworth and Andrews) would cover the loss. It may have if not for theinjuries to Jones, Anderson, & the center (sp?)

Fenene is signed for just over the NFL minimum. The team has no depth at the position to replace him if lost. How does one compare the handling of these two players?

As to your question of race, both players are white, so I don't see the relavance. Could a fan ever prove he don't know what he is talking about morer thoroughly in just one post?

I agree with Anonymous 6:41,

The knob who suggested that race played a part in a personnel decision is ridiculous. I guess when you are an idiot and uninformed, then it's easy to play the race card. Get a clue buddy.
