T. Perry, Kilmer out for season

By Mark Curnutte
mcurnutte@enquirer.com

In moves that directly affect the Bengals' efforts to upgrade their woeful special teams, the club this afternoon announced it had placed wide receiver Tab Perry and safety Ethan Kilmer on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Perry and Kilmer were counted on as vital members of the kickoff and punt return and coverage units.

Perry appeared in just two games this season. He was the No. 1 kickoff return man, a dependable cover man and had been elevated to the team's No. 3 wide receiver while Chris Henry served his eight-game NFL suspension.

Perry had one catch for seven yards and had returned seven kickoffs for a 20.7-yard average.

To fill the hole at wide receiver, the Bengals today signed Courtney Roby to a two-year contract. Roby is a third-year NFL player. He was a third-round draft pick by Tennessee in 2005. Over the 2005-06 seasons, he played in 25 games with six starts for the Titans, with 23 receptions for 317 yards and one touchdown. He caught 21 passes for 289 yards with one score as a rookie. He also returned 22 kickoffs for a 22.5-yard average, all as a rookie. He played in all four 2007 preseason games for the Titans and had six catches for 65 yards. He was waived Sept. 1.

Kilmer, as a rookie in 2006, was second with 18 special teams tackle and was a gunner -- a key outside coverage man who runs downfield at the snap -- on the punt coverage unit that was ranked first in the NFL. He suffered a knee injury at the start of training camp. The Bengals kept a spot for him on the 53-man roster and hoped he would be ready by the bye. He wasn't.

In addition, the Bengals returned cornerback Johnathan Joseph to the roster. He had missed the Kansas City game because of a one-game NFL suspension for violating the substance abuse policy.

The Bengals last week had signed second-year safety John Busing to take Joseph's roster spot. Busing played at Kansas City and stays on the active roster, in essence, to replace Kilmer.

Mark,
What don't they cut Perry...What is up with that. He has been hurt more than he has played. Does he have something over Marvin Or Mike or what....In Greece the sick were thrown over the hill and left for the vultures. Lets gets rid of all this weakness. Can we beat the Jets or not. If they lose to the Jets we should just quit and join the Arena League. I HAVE HAD IT WITH THIS JOKE OF A TEAM. I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE

There's no point beating up on the team because they've had injuries. And pretty bad luck with injuries at that.

It's also a bit naive to criticize the players that have been brought in. We're 6 weeks into the season. We're not going to poach Randy Moss off waivers or LD from the SD practise squad. We're picking up the only players that are available.

No more Perrys. Both Chris and tab can't stay healthy

I guess everybody forget about when we sucked. I guess everybody doesn't remember going through a decade of losing. We get one good season where we should have been super bowl champs and now we can't live to see another 8-8 season because that would just mean our coach isn't trying as hard as the '05 season...... obviously isn't trying... fire him right?? You're all weak fans who need to realize what Marvin's done with what he has. You can't make filet mignon out of ground beef, and this year, based on injuries, new guys, and suspensions... he's got ground beef.

Bengals need to get rid of these marginal players who are always hurt. Nothing personal. Just a fact. Pro Football is a TOUGH Sport. Some players bodys simply cannot take pounding. Frankly I have all respect in world for these players. But to count on them in future seems like a bad business decision. Ie... C. Perry, D. Pollack etc... BTW another coach consider is Greg Williams Def Coordinator for Washington.

Really to bad about Kilmer this year. I really enjoyed watching him last year. His motor didn't stop running, he was exciting to watch.

I didn't hold much hope in Perry's playing health.
He might just be too fragile (for lack of a better word) to play and take the pounding at this level.

OK, I'm not a genius when it comes to the available roster spots. Do all of these guys on IR count toward the roster?

Over the last 3 weeks excluding the bye the Bengals special teams have been much improved. I feel the signing of special team ace Blue Adams has contributed to this. Also, Adams played nickelback against Kansas City and totaled up 4 tackles and a sack. I am happy with the progress of the special teams and don't feel there will be any let down and look for the Bengals to be back where they were last year on special teams.

Speaking of KC -- Tampa Bay just upped their running game by picking up KC's Michael Bennett. Since Priest Holmes is due back, Bennett could not have cost much. Sigh...

p.s. I don't think we have that many more injuries- but we sure don't seem good at ID-ing the chronically-injured like C Perry & Chatman..

There you go, root for the Bengals to lose the next 11 games. #1 draft pick will be ridiculous (some fat injury-prone running back, maybe?) and we'll have the same ol' same ol' as we do each year. Funny how some teams just don't change much from decade to decade. Is there an OL or DL worth taking #1? If so, GO JETS!

Too bad Perry misses another year. So much potential, so undurable...hope he gets and stays healthy for a season.

Hey 7:44, the answer is no. That is the purpose of the IR, to make roster room for healthy players.

Hey 8:40, the answer is not Michael Bennett, unless he also plays linebacker. Tampa gave up TWO draft picks for him. The last thing the Bengals want to do at 1-4 is give up draft picks, that is why they are getting all of these guys off the street instead. If they were 4-1 or 3-2, we might see some different moves...
