Injured players improving

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was not confrontational or angry during his Monday news conference within the past hour. He did avoid answering some questions directly but did say that he puts more pressure on himself internally than any fan or boss could, in the wake of his team's 1-4 start.

Lewis said that the team suffered two notable injuries Sunday at Kansas City. Wide receiver Antonio Chatman (hamstring) and linebacker Corey Mays (hamstring) were injured but still have a chance to returning to the field for the Jets game Sunday afternoon.

Out will be right tackle Willie Anderson (heel, knee), safety Ethan Kilmer (knee) and wide receiver Tab Perry (hip).

"We'll see where Ahmad (Brooks, groin) is," Lewis said.

Lewis did say linebackers Caleb Miller (back) and Rashad Jeanty (calf) have an opportunity to practice this week.

Lewis also said tailback Rudi Johnson (hamstring) "came though the game" but experienced tightness in the hamstring during the third quarter. Johnson said Sunday he did not aggravate the leg.

Tight end Reggie Kelly suffered a sprained left ankle but returned to the game and said afterward that he was fine.

Other points of interest:

-- "Carson (Palmer) puts a lot of pressure on himself all the time," Lewis said of the quarterback, who threw two more interceptions and lost a fumble Sunday against the Chiefs.

-- Asked how only five of 83 teams since 1990 -- when the playoff format was expanded to six teams in each conference -- have started 1-4 and made the playoffs, Lewis said, "We get a chance to do something special."

-- Running back Chris Perry, who is eligible to return from the physically unbable to perform (PUP) list this week, said he has not been told yet by coaches whether he will be back in time for the Jets game. Lewis declined to speculate about Perry's immediate future or the team's plans for the running back this week.

I am SHOCKED Antonio Chatman is hurt. Isn't he the Cal Ripken of football?

I'm glad Reggie Kelly is going to be back though. His 3 yard out patterns are invaluable to this team. He's such a great guy!

Putting all the attitude/selfishness/coaching issues aside...

The Bengals have had some really crucial injuries this year.

Losing Brooks on defense, Marshall after after only playing 1-2 games.

Probably the biggest ones have been Willie Anderson and Levi Jones...I know a winning franchise should be able to overcome a certain amount of injuries, but the key to the Bengals offensive success in recent years has been as much Willie Anderson and Levi Jones as anyone else.

This team is really bad, and while it's surprising at first, when you think of all the injuries, and the draft picks gone wrong, it's not so surprising.

Having re-watched the KC game, I have one comment - fix the running game and a lot of things will get better. Kenny Watson may be a good possession receiver on third down, but he is no part of a successful running game. Either Rudy can go full time and all out or do something else. You won't succeed with the running game you have now!

I am sorry, but with 70% of payroll invested in Offense, and with the personnel available, Brat is not delivering. his management of the game with deciding plays is horrendous. If something works, he does not do it again. If something does not, he has to do it... Bresnahan has the injury excuse. Don't cry 3rd WR, with Chad and TJ, there is no excuse.

If this continues, don't be surprised if Carson Palmer is one of those players that retires early so he doesn't have to be on this team of losers.

Trade Chad Johnson to the Vikings, first and foremost. Trade Rudi to anyone who will take him for a decent return. Sign Whitworth to a long term deal as soon as possible. Replace bratkowski as the end of the season, cut your losses and go with a coordinator who will call a consistent and moderate gameplan, tailored to defeat the weaknesses of the defense. We don't think. We expect everyone to be able to defeat their matchup. It don't work that way, you have to maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses; and to minimize opponents strengths and exploit their weaknesses. We DO NOT THINK like that.

Off-topic:

Anyone know where I can find the parody of the Bengal growl song that 700 WLW has been playing recently?

It's hilarious!

BengalsFan is correct in observing that we also happen to have a big problem running the ball (a shortage or good running backs in addition to linebackers). Surely Irons' season-ending injury ruined that part of the Bengals' offense given Rudi's sudden and precipitous decline.

Marvin Lewis, aka Mr. Excuses, still can't claim that it's all about the injuries when other teams go through the same degree of first-stringer losses.

This season is lost. There's really nothing more to it than that, even if the Bengals beat the Jets next week, which they won't unless Marvin can not only fix his lousy coaching staff and their inability to get the offense on the same page and the defense on any page, and get Brown to make a trade --why not try to get Tatum Bell from Detroit or Chris Henry from Tennessee for Oucho Stinko, the biggest jerk in the NFL?

Imagine how nice a twin Chris Henry offensive punch would be? Not that the Titans would be stupid enough to welcome Jerko Sinko into their locker room.

Chad Johnson, shut up and play better or get the hell out of Cincinnati!

Yesterday at the press conference, a reporter asked Coach Lewis something about Chris Henry. Coach Lewis responded by saying that Chris Henry is not on the team.

I know he's suspended for the first eight games, but his name is not listed on the roster on Bengals.com. Not even in the catagory of "Reserve/Suspended" which is currently occupied by Johnathan Joseph.

Is this how it has been since week one...or is this new?

Somehow it seems like 1996 again.

Remember when the Bengals were almost rolled into another team, closing up shop on this franchise? I knew I'd one day regret that the Bengals pulled through.

It's idiotic to blame Chad Johnson for the Bengals stinkage. He's a top player (although didn't do much in big games last year)... no matter what, his antics are the problem. The problem starts with special teams that stink, the worst defense in the NFL, mega-bucks offensive tackles who are perpetually injured, and a one-dimensional offense with two guys who are pass-catching threats.

Not to mention a cheapskate jerk of an owner who won't pay for more than about 2 scouts, so your draft picks end up either stinking or in jail (or both).

I think an excellent example of the respect level of this team was when Chad Johnson walked off the field and completely blew off Marvin Lewis as he was trying to talk to him. Marvin even tried grabbing his arm, but Chad continued toward the bench. Am I the only one who noticed that? Also, one of Palmers interceptions should be credited to Johnson. Granted, Carson overthrew it a bit, but I remember the commentators even mentioning that Chad let up towards the end and just gave up on the ball. Why not at least try and bat the ball away from the defenders?

sandlotch Marvin is 1-4 in weeks after a buy, in 2002 they beat the Ravens 34-26 after the bye. Still horrible, but not zero.

Can we please stop using the terms "Bungles" and "Ocho Stinko" I know this team is sad and Chad is struggling, but both of these terms are so overplayed and corny.

The bengals have many problems, defense,o line and our running game. First thing they should do is TRADE CHAD JOHNSEN. He is a overpaid baby and needs to grow up. We haven't won anything with him,who is to say we wont win without him. The way he act's is not good for this football team, its corey dillon all over again and he dont carry the team like corey did.I was never sold on rudi,he has the vision of a blind 80 year old. Trade levi, chad, rudi and get picks and players and start over.

Chad is still our best (perhaps equal best with TJ) offensive player. He gets upset, as we all do, when the team sucks. He also gets double-teamed out of many games, which is different than not showing up.

Our problem is coaching. A good coaching team would take these talented players to a 10-6 season without too much trouble. Marvin isn't that bad. His coordinators are. His biggest fault is tolerating mediocrity which breads ineptitude.

lets be real people. you guys are all kidding yourselves if you thought the bengals had turned a corner to 'elite' team status. how many times have they been to the playoffs under lewis? um yeah once. and how many seasons have they finished 8-8?

sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but things aren't gonna get any better. they will be lucky to even finish 4-12 this year.

and that defense. oh my word, even if they were all healthy they couldn't stop a high school team. i thought marvin lewis was the architect of the 'greatest defense ever assembled' aka the ravens' D from their SB year. well where is that magic now? i think it just goes to show that players should get way more credit than coaches for their performances.

here's to 4-12! cheers!
