Looking toward Sunday ...

... I see the Bengals pulling out a 27-23 victory against the Jets. I can't believe I'm picking them, but as was the case in Kansas City, the Bengals match-up well with New York.

But if the Bengals can't win this one, I see them dropping to 1-6 with a home loss to the Steelers next week before heading to Buffalo.

The Bengals should be able to relieve some of the pressure from its pass offense by running the ball with Kenny Watson and Rudi Johnson against the Jets.

Of course, the $64,000 question remains can the Bengals slow down Thomas Jones and the Jets run game?

Observations:

-- Marvin Lewis might have done one of his best coaching jobs of the season this past week to keep left tackle Levi Jones in the fold. Lewis and Jones clash through the media, at times, but Lewis -- sensing that he could do nothing more to criticize Jones than Jones was already doing to himself -- took a softer approach. Jones appreciated it. Jones is looking for redemption. These are two intelligent, headstrong men.

-- The lack of a solid Cincinnati run game has hurt its offense more than the absence of a "third" receiver.

-- There could be a real desperation in the air Sunday afternoon. Neither the 1-4 Bengals nor the 1-5 Jets could have seen themselves in such a dire place this early in the season. The teams should come out swinging.

I'm sure that Levi Jones is, in fact, "intelligent and headstrong". I think Bengals fans wish he were also "good at his position". Levi seems to have unfortunately contracted the virulent strain of "Bengalitis" which has run rampant through the locker room the last couple of years. WebMD defines it as "the terminal belief, without discernible evidence, that one is a much better football player than one actually is, or that can be demonstrated by quantifiable results".

The real problem isn't the offensive line or the lack of a consistent third receiver--or even a depleted linebacking corps. The problem is special teams. Looking at the game last week, the five times the Chiefs scored they started on their own 44 or closer (twice on turnovers granted). When the Bengals had them back in their own territory they never scored. Starting field position also made the difference in the Browns game. The sum total of our injuries of course hurts the kicking and punting units, but until we shore up special teams I can't see winning any games, including this weekend's.

Rudi Johnson seems slow to me...even before the injury. I also think he has a knack for missing the hole (it's almost like he looks for people to run into). It is to the point that you wonder about his vision.

Watson looks like a real blaser in comparision; if healthy, Perry would look like a rocket.

Maybe picking Irons was a telling move that the Bengals know something.

Levi has become the O line version of Sam Adams. At least Sam had the decency to keep his mouth essentially shut while collecting those fat paychecks (no pun intended).

I see the GALs eeking a win this week against the Jets. They will win it much like they did against the Ravens, dirty, ugly, lucky, and then I will spend the next week having to endure local sportstalk, west side alcoholic who dey heads talking about the Superbowl again. It will be a whole week before the Steelers get a chance to expose this team and run up about 45 points on this D. Wow, I cannot wait to see this "high powered O" go up against that Steeler D. I can't wait for "Steeler week".
By the way (and I'll prolly post this several times next week) what do the folks in Pittsburgh call the week they play the Bengals? "week 8". Stay retarded Bengal fans, we love ya. Morons. I DEY, YOU DEY, WE ALL DEY ON ANY DEY!

Who Dey Head Hunter... Boy you seem awfully into the Bengals for not liking them at all?? Do you even have a team you like, or do you just like to talk about teams that aren't very good right now.. Seems like the later to me..

Who dey head hunter
I have a question. If you hate the Bengals so much then why do you waste your time listening to local sports talk shows and posting comments on a Bengals blog. What’s the matter you keep getting rejected by all the "West side honey" What a sad and lonely life you must live.

The guy above has it correct. Lets
just let the other team start on
their own 40 yard line on every
kick-off. The Bengals would be
better off. Unreal !!!

You're picking the Bengals? On what basis? Their healthy running game? Their ability to make Chad Pennington look like Chad Pennington (instead of Tom Brady)? Those crisply run pass routes by Chad Johnson? Those not too high passes over the receivers' heads thrown by the dozens by Carson? That huge pass rush pressing opposing QBs into mistakes every week? Our smash-mouth offensive line? Our brilliant clock management? Our clever timeout burning and replay wasting? Our superior vertical offensive play-calling? Our giant of a motivator head coach Lewis?

Maybe after the Jets kick ass Sunday the rest of you will realize just how bad this team really is?

The lack of a running game is not the problem. The lack of running running plays may be the problem. Over the past two games, the Bengals ran 33 times for 135 yards (4.1 avg.) and Kenny Watson ran 26 times for 123 yards (4.7 avg.). I think anyone would say that's a pretty good running game. The problem is not the running game. It's the game plan that doesn't include running plays. I think Kenny Watson is very capable of having a big game if his number is called enough times.

The lack of a running game isn't the problem? Oh no, in the NFL you don't need a running game to win, right!

Lay off the moonshine and pay attention!

A good running game would have allowed the Bengals to have a far better chance of beating Cleveland, Seattle, and KC.

Where do these squidbillies come from?

The offensive problem is dink passes instead of a long and strong vertical game. If Carson threw 2 deep balls per series, and had a better running game to keep the DBs honest, then the offense could play up to its potential. It's not as simple as stats, and the running game is pathetic but you're right, the play-calling is garbage, we need more mid-long passes and better (less predictable) running calls. Our coaches seem incapable of using the offense to its potential, and that's not a new problem by any means here.
