Bengals add another bad boy in Berryman

The Bengals signed former Iowa State defensive end Jason Berryman to two-year contract Tuesday -- he is one of 10 newcomers to the offseason roster.

But, according to the Des Moines Register, Berryman is just another bad boy on a roster filled with them.

According to the newspaper, Berryman last played for the Cyclones in 2005, when he was third on the team with 72 tackles, had had several legal problems.

The Register reports: "In his last college game, the 2005 Houston Bowl, he collected 12 tackles and five sacks. As a freshman, he was named the Big 12's defensive newcomer of the year in 2003.

"Berryman, however, drew almost as much attention to himself off the field.

"He was kicked off the team last January shortly after being ticketed for being "on premises under age" at a dance club. He had spent 258 days in the Story County jail for punching an Iowa State student and robbing him of $4 and a cell phone from in August 2004. He was released from jail in April 2005 and was allowed to rejoin the Cyclones that August.

"Berryman applied for the 2006 NFL supplemental draft last summer but was not selected."

Should fit right in.

Marvin has no intention of doing things differently next yr. He has a constituency of one--Mike Brown. The latter has always aspired to be nothing more than competitive in the NFL and to operate the team at a profit.

Guys like this will be welcomed aboard and contributors like Smith, Steinbach, etc., will be shown the door.

Not a single change on the coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball will occur. As long as Bengal fans fill the seats, mediocrity is tolerated.

Apparently the Bengals are addicted to signing thugs and can't break the habit. Is this Marvin Lewis's problem or Mike Brown's?

On the surface this doesn't sound like the best of circumstances, in light of other off field problems. However, these are kids, merely teenagers, and ones that have likely been raised with less than ideal circumstances.

The RISK is great to Marvin and the Organization, to take such a flier on any player with a storied legal past. I admire his guts and conviction to what he thinks is right, especially offering an opportunity to a young man that he obviously has some belief in; both personally and athletic ability.

The timing of the signing is most startling, being the same day as the "get tough" press conference.

I personally think that come opening day we will see a roster of some guy named Thurman wearing # 51, too. I hear Marvin's recent comments about Thurman not being in the mix as nothing more than a public motivational challenge to Odel, and the rest of the roster. Marvin will field a team first and foremost of the 53 best athletes, and cope with some personal issues as they appear.

Lets face it Nati, if the players in Orange and Black stripes were currently sitting at 10-6, and readying for this weeks playoff game in NE or Indy, the press would be reacting all together differently. Starting next season, the team will again be a 12-4 / 11-5 pre-season favorite to go deep into the playoffs, and we Bengal fans will be in trenched on the wagon with Marvin at the helm. We become great critics when things don't immediately go our way... (Seems to be a trait that Nati fans have perfected; not limited to only football fans either).

Go 8-8 and play wildly inconsistent defence and you are going to get criticism. If the Bdngals had not gotten any arrests people would be complaining that we are a bunch of goody-goody nice guys who get bullied. Get some nasty bad boys and tough-up would be the call.

Problem players have been around longer than Marvin. Remember years ago and Stanley Wilson's antics the night before the Super Bowl.

JT in the nati said, "We become great critics when things don't immediately go our way... ".

Huh? Things are not "immediately" going our way? In the parity obsessed NFL, four years is an ETERNITY. In the last four years, Marvin Lewis has given us 8-8, 8-8, 11-5, and 8-8, with not ONE SINGLE playoff victory. Coaches have been CANNED for less than this.

Maybe Mike Brown is okay with these poor results, since he's raking in more dough than ever, but this season ticket holder, read: CUSTOMER of the Bengals, is NOT satisfied with this failure to perform.

Or the rape in Seattle.

Hey Jt in the nati - "We become great critics when things don't immediately go our way... "?!?

Immediately?!?

The Bengals have one winning season in the last 16 seasons and have the longest current playoff victory drought in the NFL. Even the Browns and Lions have won a playoff game more recently than the Bengals.

I think this great city has been plenty patient with this pathetic organization. Now go get a clue.

Big difference between Berryman, who is a convicted thug who apparently served nearly a yr in jail, and Steinbach, who was cited for drinking and boating. Can you imagine that--a guy with a boat who also drinks beer!

If DUI arrests resulted in automatic suspensions for life, NFL rosters would be reduced drammatically.

If fans leaving a Bengals game had to blow a breathalyzer, How many of the 60,000 do you think you blow over the legal limit?

It's a good thing Marvin isn't worried about the character of the fans.

You could buy a good linebacker from on Sunday's beer sales at PBS.

Why are we trying to be the team that "saves all the lost souls"? Yes this boy may be a great football player, however ,is he going to be off the field more than he is on because of violations? Chris Henry is a perfect example of this. He is a GREAT football player but cannot stay out of trouble. What is the point in having great football players if you cannot play them? Someone please explain!!!!

What possible relevance does this comment have? Are you saying because fans drink at a game, that it minimizes the severity of our boys drinking and boating/driving?

You are truly clueless.

I recognize that Jason has encountered some difficulties during his time with the Cyclones, however, he has been characterized unfairly. I served as Jason's high school principal, and a finer young man you'll never meet. He struggled mightily adjusting to being away from his supportive family in Houston and the coaching staff at Kashmere High School.

Please give this young man an opportunity to make ammends and to deomnstrate how deserving he is of this oppportunity. Don't continue to typecast him and paint him with a broad brush.
