Bengals to draft No. 18

The NFL released the official draft order today for April.

One of eight NFL teams to finish with an 8-8 record, the Bengals will select 18th overall as result of their .535 strength of schedule rating.

Jacksonville will draft No. 17 and Tennessee 19th.

Clearly, the Bengals' greatest needs are on defense.

I think the biggest issue is with direction & motivation, not talent.

Let's first agree that the NFL is a business and the #1 priority is to win.So instead of pointing fingers and whining about what coulda, shoulda,or woulda, the Bengals brass need to roll their sleeves up and make some tough decisions to making this football team a more competitive, cohesive unit for 2007.Several coaches and players have to go and selection of players/position needs in the draft must improve.Defensive needs should be addressed in the 1st three rounds. Play calling has become very predictable and coaches should play the players whom are performing best on the field, regardless of how many years of seniority or how large their salary is.Defense is and always will produce championships.Rudi is a decent back but w/o exceptional power or speed, should use Watson more, esp. on passing downs.Palmer needs to continue rehabbing because he needs to be more mobile when pressured out of the pocket.A pass receiving TE would help and can Wilkerson play center? Can we find someone to return a punt? We need more team leadership from players, esp.on the defense and coaches need to take a cue from Cowher--get on and fire up players when need be... The road to the Super Bowl starts now!!!!

Will we use Franchise tag on Steinbach? Seems like a guard would be relatively easy to replace, even one as talented as him, especially considering the experience Whitworth gained this year. That way we don't lose him without getting anything in return.

DTOWN 34, One of your solutions is to fire the offensive coordinator???? Are you serious? The offense was not the problem....they averaged 23 points per game. "Any" team in the NFL should be able to win if your offense scores 23 points. Its the defense. It always has been, even before Marvin came to town. All we needed this year was a defense that was at least ranked in the middle of the NFL, and we would have made the playoffs easily. "If" you are going to fire a coordinator, it should be the "Defensive" coordinator, not the offensive coordinator. Signed, MRJSS.

Dtown: Bengals don't have a #3 in the draft this year, they used it in the supplemental for Brooks

How awesome is our season that we're drafting ahead of Tennessee and Denver, both teams starting rookie quarterbacks, one of which exposed our defense for the mediocre talents many of them are. I'm delighted Dexter Jackson brings a new attitude to this team, but if he brought a few more big plays it would be helpful. Same goes for Sam Adams. As for Tory James, heck, I'd be happy if he could just stay 5 yards behind his man instead of 10. Not sure you can ask any more from him.

Good article on the real locker room scoop. Nice to hear the truth come out.

I'm surprised that (much) more isn't made out of the mess the offensive line became shortly after the begining of the season. Carson spent way too much time runing for his life (especailly for a guy coming off a serious injury) and/or without enought time to go through his progressions. Is it any wonder he began to hurry and overthrow some balls?

All of the other stuff certainly has some merit, but this offense would have averaged 30 a game if the O-line maintained any reasonable health.

Mark, don't you think the biggest concerns of 'selfishness' reflect more on the players who do not stay in their gaps on defense and instead try to chase the ball to try and make a tackle ? To me, all of the off-the-field issues don't matter in wins and losses much if you 'do your job' on the field.
