Bengals terrible on third-down defense

BALTIMORE -- An 11-yard pass from Steve McNair to Derrick Mason on third and 11 makes the Ravens 5 of 6 on third-down plays.

McNair also is 9-of-10 passing now for 98 yards with a third-and-2 play coming up from the Cincinnati 25-yard line.

The result: an incomplete pass. Johnathan Joseph broke up would should have been a catch by tight end Todd Heap. The Ravens have converted 5 of 7 on third down.

Instead, the Ravens settled for a 43-yard Matt Stover field goal with 5:39 remaining in the second quarter. It is Stover's 31st field goal in a row.

The Ravens are 42-1 under coach Brian Billick when they have a 14-point lead. Of course, the only loss in that record was to the Bengals in 2004, when Carson Palmer erased a 20-3 three-quarter deficit for a 27-26 Cincinnati victory.
