Big Ben's fans didn't like Enquirer analysis

My analysis story this morning in The Enquirer – that I would pick Carson Palmer over Ben Roethlisberger if starting an NFL franchise – has created a stir.

Some responses:

Letter 1, from Matthew Muia: "What a surprise that you would pick Palmer in that farce of an article. Venture outside of Cincinnati, and most disagree with you."

Letter 2, from Nancy Anderson, who refers to herself as a loyal Pittsburgh fan: "I just read your comparison of the quarterbacks for the Steelers vs. Bengals. You are grossly misinformed regarding Ben Roethlisberger’s personality.

"How absurd it was of you to refer to him as a `hot dog’ – have you ever met him? His public appearances are all driven by the football fever that permeates the air in Pittsburgh. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh during the Steel Curtain days. Pittsburgh fans and the like have created the `Big Ben Era’ NOT Ben himself. He has accepted his role and has earned the respect of mostly everyone, except for you, I suppose.

"Check out his charitable contributions in the Pittsburgh area, and you will feel ashamed. I recommend that you do more research before you write your next article. That way you won't appear like a `weiner!'

"PS: Please forward this to the appropriate department at The Enquirer, so that it can be published and folks in Cincinnati can see another perspective on Ben. I dare you!"

Letter 3, from John: "In response to your article titled `Ben's a star, but Carson's a keeper' – isn't the most important aspect of any sport winning? Ben has a better winning percentage. Period, end of story. Ben is the best young QB out there. It takes more than a soft touch to win games. It takes poise and confidence and (trust) from your teammates and Ben has all of that. Carson does not."

Letter 4, from Lee W. Young: "I am a huge Steelers fan, so I guess I can give you one more advantage that Palmer has: he stays healthy. Ben's been injured all year. Both knees are bad now. Can you say, `Good-bye mobility?' And now his thumb is hurt again.

"It pains me to say this: I think it's the Bengals' year. I would love it if we won, of course, but I think (Cincinnati) will win, perhaps easily. We can't run the ball, nor seemingly now, pass it."

Letter 5, from Robert M. Farrell Jr.: "You're right on target. Up until now, at least, Ben had gotten all of the ink, but Carson is clearly the better NFL QB. As we’ve seen, stuff Pittsburgh's running game and you own them."

As a Steelers fan I will give the nod to Carson as he is the much better pure passer. Ben was just lucky to fall into the team he did, he wasn't the cornerstone of a franchise as palmer had to step into.

Ask any 32 NFL Coach's and GM's and I promise 90% of them would want Palmer. That is what this article is saying. Do not take it to heart Steeler Fans. Ben is good and yes he has a better winning percentage(because of his line, Defense & DA BUS) but Palmer is the best young QB period. No matter who you are bias towards.

Ha! That about sums the kind of brain matter we're dealing with in Pittsburgh.

Ben is God. Carson is Moses.

That could change, but I'll take my chances with God.

Ben's winning percentage? Since when has Ben actually had to win the game. I would attribute it to the running game and defense. These are Cowher's and Pittsburgh's staples. The won before Ben and then will win after him.
If you let any GM choose his QB to build a franchise around, Peyton would be the first selection and then Carson. Ben would fall into the mix with McNabb, Brady and Eli.

I love Ben and he has done a great job. But if I could trade him for Carson Palmer I would. Carson has great accuracy, an outstanding deep ball and excellent game knowledge.

I always here how Ben was lucky to fall into the Steelers. I wouldn't say Carson has a chopped liver line either. He has the best trio of receivers in the league and the second best line behind Indy, so is Carson just a product of his "system" like Ben is?

Carson has to win games because our defense is suspect at best. we have no front 4, maybe front 7 (besides Odell) and we get trampled consistently. i think carson's skills have been eminent all season long and he does pass more than 14 times a game.

The article clearly dealt with who the better QB is, not who the better "game manager" is. Carson is clearly the better QB. I must admit though, Ben is awesome at handing the ball off.

The Bengals are playing good ball because they have good skill position players. The Steelers are playing ball because they have everything else.
The Bengals have better skill players than the Steelers from head to toe. No one would take Hines Ward over Chad Johnson or Willie Parker over Rudi Johnson, likewise no one would take Ben over Carson. The Steelers always win because the rest of their team is so talented.
So who cares, because come Sunday the Steelers win.

An article like this is ridiculous. Obviously, the people in Pittsburgh are going to disagree with the contention that Palmer is better, and the people in Cincinnati are going to support any such claim. It doesn't matter what I think, or what people in Pittsburgh think or what Curnutte thinks. Talking about all this won't get the Bengals a win on Sunday, and that's all I really want.

I'm almost positive that BEN is 6-0 versus Cincinnati. 3-0 versus the horrible UC Bearcats, and 3-0 versus the Bungles.

GO BEN and GO MIAMI REDHAWKS!

"isn't the most important aspect of any sport winning? Ben has a better winning percentage. Period, end of story."
Isn't football a team sport? Can there be more than one player that could possibly contribute to a team's winning percentage? Could having the number one ranked defense in the entire NFL possibly help out a team's winning percentage? Nah, you're probably right, it's all Ben. Period, end of story.

And Ben is gay, they even put it on a bottle.

at 12/03/2005 10:38 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

NOw why even compare the two they both have diffrent threats like big ben has mobility and carson has an arm. Carson also has the likes of chad and T.J., while the steelers receivers are nothing to laugh at. Everybody loved Tom Brady when he was winning now nobody would put him in there top 5. so i guess all im sayin pittsburgh is gonna beat on the bungles like we did not to long ago

at 12/03/2005 4:20 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The big difference between Carson and Ben is that Carson will go down as one of the best QBs ever. Ben will fade away just like Kordell did.

at 12/03/2005 8:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dissing the author of this article makes no sense. He's entirely right about Palmer and Roethlisberger. Steeler Fan needs to read what Kimo vonOelhoffen said to the AP this week: Palmer is the best QB in the NFL. I don't happen to agree with that. But Manning has a six year head start after all.

First, how did you get your links to show up at the top of your second column in Internet Explorer? Mine ony works in Firefox.

Second, I'm a Browns fan but find myself cheering for the Bengals. I suppose it's the sympathy cheer, given the Bengals having been so hapless for so long.

I think todays game clearly showed who the better quarterback is.

Steel Balls and the rest are trying to figure out what excuse to use today. And they can't blame it on Ben's thumb - that pass to Hines in the fourth quarter was a laser.

Carson is just plainly a better QB.

Ben had career highs in almost every category. Most pass atempts in a game, most complations, most yards, most td's, and most interceptions. He made bad mistakes, like throwing into triple coverage, that Carson would never even try. He could not hold his composure on the field and made three turnovers because of it. Bengals O-line had trouble many times geting to Ben and he only made completions when he had almost all the time in the world. When he was rushed, he made stupid mistakes. Carson on the other hand, when rushed, looked for a open reciever as long as possible and then threw it away. Something from a smart quarterback. Lets face it, Carson is better than Roethlisberger and aways will be. At the end of the day, we know Ben goes home wishing he could go back to the glory days in college.

at 12/06/2005 1:13 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with all your comments, except for where you talk about the Bengals O-line not getting to Big Ben. It really isn't their job to go after Ben, they usually just protect Palmer.

Pittsburgh and Big Ben can cry me a river.

Bengals Offensive line has been the best in franchise history in 2005. Sacks below 1.25/game. Offensive line has one pro bowl and 2 alternatives. The NFL is full of quarterbacks that would go to the pro bowl behind that offensive line.

After contact Palmer's QB rating is less than 1/2 what Ben achieves. Giving Palmer credit for the performance of his offensive line is bizarre.

Carson Palmer is so much better then Big Ben it isn't funny. Look I love the Bengals but before Carson we couldn't win and we had Chad and T.J. It wasnt really until the middle of last year that we realized how good they are and why, because of Carson throwing the ball throwing to them before he got hurt and then watching Kitna (even though I love Jon for what he has done for the team) step in and show us what a QB like Palmer can bring to the table and how much of a difference the offense is with out him in there. You Steeler fans cant say that because you still won with Charlie Batch. Granted he was no Ben but you still was winning games. Ben was very good at Miama (OH) and I loved seeing him go to a good team but face it the Steelers were good before he was there and they would be good if he wasn't there. Carson made us good again because with out him we could only go 6-10 with Kitna.

Pittsburghers are going to have to start dealing with the fact that the BENGALS are taking over, its long over due! They've gat all the bases covered in one form or another-Carson, Chad, TJ, Odell, Justin, Deltha, Madieu, Wiler, Levi, Shayne, Rudi, Pollack, Tab Perry, Chris Henry and so on. I have been a avid fan forever and am really looking forward to the many good years to come.

He was so mixed up he couldn't think straight. And of course then he starts limping so we can feel sorry for him and it might take the heat off the fact that he is not a great QB allways looking for excuses ! I agree he's a bigger baby than any other QB or player anywhere.,,,,,,,,,,,We will see next week,,Ben,,,,,,,,,,,

************* AMEN ***************

No one person in football today can come close to the achievments that Tom Brady has worked for in his short career !
I also agree that Big Ben is a bad joke and he should be tossed out of the game and away from our kids so they don't have tp watch this guys unsportsmanship on and off the field ever again.
I just know he will milk his newest injuries for more than it's worth !!
I think he should go out and get a real job maybe at McDonalds !!

Now that we have some perspective, it's clear Roethlisberger is superior to Palmer. WAY superior.

Palmer pads his stats against the Clevelands of the league, but CANNOT beat the Indys and New Englands of the leagues. He folds like a pup tent in the second halves of these big games.

Carson has had the luxury of playing with the same star-studded WR corps his entire career -- a huge advantage nobody outside of Peyton Manning enjoys. And yet he's done nothing.

The loss to the Steelers said it all -- season on the line, everything to play for. And Palmer comes up short. If not for Willie Parker gift-fumbling at the goal line that game never goes to overtime.

Amazingly, some people here cling to the myth that Roethlisberger supposedly doesn't have to win games on his own -- check the Steelers LAME rushing totals in the '06 playoffs, and you'll see in FACT Ben carried the team to the Super Bowl.

I'd take Ben over Fading Carson in a hearbeat. Ben can carry a team over playoff-caliber competition, Carson can't. End of story.

at 5/17/2007 10:50 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah I have to agree -- ANYONE who thinks Palmer is better than Ben is an IDIOT. Look at the last game -- Ben has nothing to play for, and still shows up Carson. That said it all. Big Ben is a hundred times better than Choking Carson Palmer.

at 5/17/2007 10:54 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

As a Bengals fan, I'm tired of all the excuses made for Palmer. He faded during the big games, as usual. Where was he in the second half of the San Diego game? New England? Indianapolis? It seems Teflon Carson always escapes blame, and I'm tired of the town giving him a free pass. Time to beat the good teams, Carson, not just building a fantasy rep against the scrubs.

I'd trade for Big Ben in a heartbeat.
