NFL says no to Thurman

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Bengals announced this morning that Odell Thurman's application for reinstatement was denied by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Thurman can apply again for reinstatement after the the 2007 season.

He was suspended for one year following a DUI arrest on Sept. 25, which was his third violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Bengals players are reporting today to training camp at Georgetown College. The deadline for reporting is 3 p.m.

Thurman was not listed with the 11 linebackers on the team's first depth chart, released Tuesday in the 2007 Bengals media guide.

The announcement comes as a surprise. People in Thurman's camp were optimistic.

A phone message left for Safarrah Lawson, Thurman's Atlanta-based representative, was not immediately returned this morning.

“He has done everything he was supposed to,” Lawson, told The Enquirer last week. Thurman's third violation of the NFL substance abuse policy mandated the one-year suspension.

The linebacker completed a four-month alcohol rehabilitation stay in April in South Carolina and a subsequent one-month out-patient program.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was not available for comment this morning but had left open the door for Thurman’s return to the team.Lewis had been in contact with Thurman through his rehab. Lewis, linebackers coach Ricky Hunley and assistant strength and conditioning coach Ray Oliver all visited Thurman in South Carolina.

Thurman started 15 games and played in all 16 as a rookie at middle linebacker in 2005, leading the defense with 148 tackles.

The Bengals drafted Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental draft a year ago, and after an up-and-down rookie season, Brooks had an impressive offseason and staked claim to the starting job in the middle.

Thurman, who still has three years remaining on his rookie contract, could have a future as an outside linebacker if he is reinstated after the season.Thurman had a minor scrape with the law in June in his hometown of Monticello, Ga., and it is unclear at this time whether the incident played into Goodell's decision to deny Thurman's application.

Two Monticello men filed a pre-warrant hearing application following an alleged altercation at a house party overnight June 2 and 3.But the two men who made the complaint against Thurman withdrew it late the day before a magistrate in Jasper County, Ga., was scheduled to hear it.

No criminal charges were ever filed.

Two men alleged in the complaint that Thurman had committed acts of criminal trespass, aggravated assault and pointing a gun in the early morning hours Sunday at a house party in Monticello.

If Thurman played for any team other than the Bengals, he would have been reinstated. This is the league's way of telling Mike and Marv that the team remains on double secret probation.

Well the word on Thurman is that he is denied for another year??? what the heck is the NFL offices and Goodell's problem.. the man (Thurman) has done what they asked of him and more.. and they still say no dice... this new approach that Goodell and the NFL offices have taken is becoming a little extreme and ridiculas.. I hope that Goodell can live up to the expectations he is giving out.. or he just might be the next employee of the NFL to be suspended till futher notice...

Mark,

Could you provide a little clarification please? If in fact Odell has done everything he has supposed to based on the stipulations of his suspension, I don't understand how the league can deny his reinstatement. Seems like Odell would have legal recourse of some sort against the league. As far as Goodell goes, I'm all for discipline and most of the steps that he has taken this far to clean up the league. The Chris henry's and pac man Jones' of the world deserve to be suspended for seasons at a time. I just don't understand how a reinstatement can be denied, again under the assumption that Odell has crossed all his T's and dotted all his I's when it comes to abiding by the stipulations of his suspension. I think most would agree that this country is all about second chances, ala Josh Hamilton. I say Odell deserves his, in conjunction with a tight leash on any further incidents.

The punishment had fit the crime. So he gets punished twice - does this stand up in court?

Anyone wanna bet that the commish is just in a bad mood b/c of Ron Mexico?
$20 says Odell would be playing this year if this Vick mess hadn't gone down.

i do not understand what is going on here, odell does everything he is asked to and is still not reinstated. pac man better not be allowed to play next year as well. goodell has made good choices up until now and this is a slap in the face to all of bengaldom, he again is trying to make an example of the bengals, he needs to act quickly on this vick situation and better come down hard on him. again this is a HORRIBLE decision on goodells part

Thanks Michael Vick.

Not sure what kind of message this sends. He has served his time, done what was asked of him, but he still is not allowed back in? Michael Vick better never play another down in this league or it will be obvious that only the star players can get by with crimes.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Odell held up his end of the deal and did everything that was asked of him and this is how Goodell rewards him. This is a worse punishment than Chris Henry got.
Who the hell does Goodell think he is? The Dictator of the New World Order?

Does the new commish have it out for the Bengals? First he gives Henry an absolutely ridiculous 8 game suspension for nothing, since he had already been suspended for the things he had done. Now Odell has to sit another year, even after complying with what the commish wanted him to do. So Odell gets 2 years, and Tank Johnson gets 4 games for a felony? That makes sense. Vick needs to be banned for life if this is how the commish is going to do business.

The NFL did there homework on this guy. It's now obvious there still real concerns. I say there things we don't know about. He had no business being at that party.

Mark, is there any speculation or explanation as to why he got basically suspended for another whole year?

Well, it's great that the NFL is being so clear on this matter.

Oh wait, they're not. What a surprise! May be they're too caught up investigating whether running illegal gambling rings and murdering and torturing dogs for fun and profit is against the league personnel conduct policy.

Goodell graduated in 1981 from Washington and Jefferson College, which is located in Washington, PA...in the Pittsburgh Metro Area. During his Sophomore year (1978 season), the Steelers went 14-2 and won the SuperBowl. During his Junior year (1979 season), the Steelers went 12-4 and won the SuperBowl. I'm thinking that there's an excellent chance that he was (and is) a Steeler fan.

During Goodell's senior year (1980 season), the Steelers went 9-7 and missed out on the playoffs...having twice lost to the lowly, 6-10, Bengals.

The next season (1981), the Steelers again missed the post-season with an 8-8 record...again losing twice to the Bengals. But the Bengals finished 12-4 and ended up in the Superbowl.

Throw on top of that the fact that Mike Brown of the Bengals was one of the owners that: repeatedly voted against Goodell for commissioner...repeatedly voted against the collective bargaining agreement (championed by Goodell)...repeatedly votes against instant replay (again, championed by Goodell)...

Maybe Goodell has a problem with remaining neutral in matters involving the Bengals and the Steelers...just maybe...

Have the rules changed and a third offense is now a 2-year suspension? Odell will appeal and will win. Goodell has been right on most things leading up to this, in this case, he is wrong.

I say this is a very unfair ruling considering the NFL and Goodell made no indication that the suspension would be longer than a year.. last year when they invoked it. Also the Georgia incident should have had no bearing on the decision as there were no charges ever filed. It was a complaint big difference…and gee it was withdrawn. So Mr. Goodell and the NFL Offices why the continued suspension ??? Do tell us we all would love to know!! I say that the Cincinnati Bengals and their fans should use this slight of Justice against our Player Odell THURMAN , the Team of the Cincinnati Bengals and The Queen City of Cincinnati to our advantage.. I say we use it like a huge chip on our shoulder and play every down and cheer every play for ODELL THURMAN AND VICTORY all the way to the SUPERBOWL and then we as a unit a TOTAL TEAM…..PLAYERS, COACHES, FANS will gain the respect we SO DESEVRE!!! THEN WE CAN JUST HOLD OUR HEADS HIGH.

As a huge Tennessee Volunteer football fan I was so happy that I could finaly root for the two guys from UGA. Though certainly not one of them's fault... that hope has been a total disapointment.
I hate to say it but most of the Bengal fans I know have no idea what they are missing... that duo could have been a dominant pair of guys.
Its a shame we will probably never get to see it.

On its face the decision seems excesive. It makes you wonder what other information we don't know about--but maybe there isn't any. As far as the NFL's overall image goes Odell Thurman is small potatoes. Thurman wasn't a star. Is Goodell sending the Bengals a message? All fans can do is speculate. My guess is there will be some type of appeal that ends up being futile. As a fan of Thurman it's disappointing. As a fan of the Bengals it sucks. And as a fan of the NFL the decision is a tough break for a potential playoff team.

I don't understand the decision, and it doesn't seem fair --

Unless the NFL concluded that it was likely that Odell had trespassed and pointed a gun at folks at that house party back in early June. Rememeber that the article says the NFL security office got copies all of the documents filed in that case -- even though the complaint was withdrawn.

If thats is it -- I can understand how something like that happening six weeks ago would affect the NFL's decision. Too bad.

Mark,

It would be nice to hear an opinion. Not much of a blog. It seems as others are saying that there could some legal recourse.

Something isn't adding up here. The suspension was called a 1-year suspension, with the chance to re-apply. To me, that means the suspension was not a 1-year, but an indefinite.

Obviously, Thurman has done something that has not been made public. The next key will be whether the NFLPA appeals this decision. If they do not, they know that Thurman screwed up again. If they do appeal, then Goodell mayhave over-stepped his boundary The next few days will be interesting, unless the scum that is Michael Vick takes up every waking hour of the two sides time.

So Jarred Allen gets two DUIs, and a 2-game suspension, and Odell gets 1 DUI and a 2-year suspension??? Where is the consistency? Is there any chance this is appealable or can the players union file a grievance?

Just who does Goodell think he is. I just dont understand where he gets off suspending people who were never charged with anything. I know Odell was charged and convicted on the things that got him suspended, but if Odell's last run-in caused a year suspension then Goodell needs to calm down and atleast wait until people are charged before suspending.

Why are so many people blaming Goddell? He did not skip a drug test, he did not get a DUI nor was he accused of waving a gun and assult at 3:00 in the morning. So again I ask what has Godell done wrong?

Mark, is the ruling subject to review? If his attorney submits a convincing case, can the ruling be modified? Some explanation seems to be in order. You are taking a man's livelihood away with a ruling the public seems to think is unjust.
