Depth chart released
The Bengals released their first depth chart of the 2007 season Tuesday at their pre-training camp luncheon.
As a disclaimer, head coach Marvin Lewis, though he puts the depth chart together with the club's media relations department, puts little stock in it.
Still, it provides a early glimpse at how the team might line up. Starters are listed first at each position in bold-face type, followed by the top backup, third-string player, etc.:

I do not see Ed Hartwell on this list. Am I missing something here. Also, how much are we going to miss our o-line guys. I havn't heard of some of these. Couldn't we have strengthend our tight end situation. Carson throws all these dump down passes but never hits the tight end with great frequency.
Any reasoning behind Whitworth not being listed as starter on the opening depth chart?
I know it is early, but has he done something to warrant demotion, or better yet what did Stacy Andrews do in the offseason to garner early starter status.
Looks like Marvin is planning for Odell Thurman not to be back with the Bengals this year. I think Thurman is reinstated that they should move Brooks to one of the outside linebackers positions.
Did we just pay Gathers a ton of money to be a 3rd down pass rusher. I thought he was going to become a 3 down DE. Why is Bryan Robinson listed the starting RE, shouldn't that be for Justin Smith and Gather at LE?
Who Deh!
Ed Hartwell aka Edgerton Hartwell.
A pre-pre-season depth chart means little in my opinion. Ed Hartwell is listed as Edgerton Hartwell. Andrews and Whitworth will see plenty of PT I'm guessing. Odell is a non-factor until he is reinstated. Coach Lewis has said this repeatedly. Move Brooks to outside????? Take another hit Spicoli. Odell goes outside. I am so fired up for the season.
I'm with Flog. This has got to be a misprint.
Does not look like a 10 wins team to me. No big deal. Most Bengal fans will take another 8-8 season, and be satisfied with it. Mike has effectively moderated their expectations.
Geathers had a double-digit sack season last year as a 3rd down pass-rusher. He is too small to be consistently effective against the run, and so the depth chart is organized to highlight the strengths of each player. Geather's strength is rushing the passer, period. Andrews and Whitworth are both athletic mountains, and I expect the starting LG job to be one of the most interesting position battles to take place at training camp this year. It also appears that Tab Perry has a significant edge as far as the 3rd WR spot goes, since he was removed from the list of kick returners. Irons will have to prove that he can pass block as effectively as Kenny Watson before he becomes the consistent 3rd down back, but regardless he will see significant playing time this year. Eric Ghiaciuc should step up this year now that he is truly competing for his starting job with Stepanovich, who played very well for the Cardinals. Also, it looks like Earl Everett is the favorite to take the last linebacker spot on the roster, but this is pre-training camp, so anything can happen.
