NFL: Porter will be fined

NFL Network -- which, by the way, is owned and operated by the NFL -- has said that the NFL will fine Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter the equivalent of three game checks for assaulting Bengals left tackle Levi Jones in a Las Vegas casino this past offseason. Porter pleaded no contest to a battery charge, the NFL's cable TV channel said.

The NFL channel said Porter will not be suspended and that his fine will likely be more than $141,000.

Jones has not yet been cleared medically to start training camp following offseason knee surgery.

UPDATE: The Dolphins won't punish linebacker Joey Porter for his Las Vegas altercation after the NFL fined him $141,176, The Miami Herald reported Saturday, July 21.

Roger Goodell's "get tough" policy just got watered down to a weak glass of tea after ONLY fining this piece of crap Porter(kicked out of games before they start, spitting on other players, voted dirtiest player several different times!) 41,000 more than he did to Brian Urlacher for wearing an improper hat at the super bowl?!?! not suspending Porter at all is a not at all funny joke!!!! this is like a $100 fine to you or i.

Porter should have been suspended. This was an intention, vicious attack on Levi. Is there a double standard in the NFL?

He should be suspened for assaulting another player (anyone for that matter). If Levi assaulted him, he would be gone for a few games. Ridiculious.

My only comment is what if this were a Cincinnati player? What would happen then! Half a season suspension, fines, probation? Oh by the way yes I am from Cincinnati!!

Double standard. Guarantee if a Bengals' Linebacker assaulted a Dolphins' Offensive Lineman he would be suspended for at least 3 games. Not to mention, not suspending Vick is ridiculous. I guess if you are on a big market team there is a double standard with Goodell's new get tough policy. What an F'in joke.

Steeler Fans say "Money WELL Spent!!!" :)

He was a STEELER! He won a superbowl championship. That makes him golden. Can we say "Double standards"?

I agree with all above. This is a travesty. The guy is the original 5-tool player, and he should have been zapped for at least four games, possibly eight. I sense that the good commish is starting to fear some backlash from the almighty players union now..... or maybe the owners? or both?

What if Levi was seriously hurt in the attack and couldn't play this season?

If a Bengals player attacks Big Ben before the Bengals-Steelrs game and he can't play because of it, would it still only be a $100,000 fine?

The NFL's handling of this matter is a joke.

Roger Goodell would be a great fit for the United Nations....

Who cares. He was fined. What else do you want, him out for a year? Maybe the Bengals should worry about their own miscreants. They should also try to put together a winning season for once in 17 years.

"They should also try to put together a winning season for once in 17 years."

Once in 17 years would have been 2005-2006 when the Bengals were 11-5 in the regular season.

They had a winning season in 2005...Fool

FOR ONCE??!! Try 2005 for starters. And also, I'd be a little worried if my head coach left, and then all the crap hit the fan in the 'Burg. Think he knew something???

Lets face it, there is a double standard. This isn't a he said/he said. This is on video. There is no denying it. He plead no contest. What else do you need. He should be suspended for at least two games. Heck, if I was Levi, I would wait till the week before the Bengals/Dolphins game and take out a restraining order against him. Although at that point he'll probably be hurt, and the fish's season will already be over!!!

The Dolphins probably lobbied hard not to have Porter suspended considering they just signed him to a huge contract, and the league might have been sympathetic since the Dolphins gave up a home game this year to aid the league goal of worldwide marketing (they will play in London's Wembley Stadium). I am a Bengals fan and think we get far too much crap for silly little mistakes our players have made, but am trying to hypothesize why Porter got a fine and not a suspension. And by the way, $150k is $150k no matter who has it! I do hate Joey Porter though, what a punk.

I guess 11-5 in 2005 wasn't a winning record? At least get your facts straight before posting and save us the idiocy. I question why an altercation in Vegas in the offseason would be mediated by the NFL at all, but I am glad to see the league at least attempt to maintain a positive image.

Clearly a Steeler fan on that last one... what an idiot! we won the division 2 years ago at 11-5.

Who's the moron that doesn't remember the 11-5 year?

at 7/20/2007 4:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

#1 - He doesn't play for the Steelers any longer.

#2 - My God, do Bengals fans have a chip on their shoulders! How many Bengals have been arrested in the past few years? 8,9? This is getting beyond the realm of coincidence, folks!

What we (those of us able to view the situation from at least a somewhat objective viewpoint) want, is for there to be some consistency in how the league handles crimes committed by their players, especially ones thta they are convicted of! Nice try at the cheap shot too, but you are incorrect as to the winning season history, idiot.

This is a joke, if a Goodell had any intentions of straightening out these criminals that play football. Porter and Vick would be suspended.

Got to love the Bengal fans. I understand the hate for Porter. I also agree that he should have recieved more. But at the same time I don't think the Bengal fans have much of a right to complain about this situation. Several of the Bengal players have been in much worst situations. By the way, you really shouldn't talk smack until your team win a Super Bowl.

DOUBLE STANDARD. If you're a celebrity, you get a slap on the wrist.

Let's see. Goodell cracks down on unknowns for puking out a car and arguing with cops, but backs off when it comes to gang attacks on other players and running animal cruelty games??? The worse the behavior, the gentler the hand. What sense does this make? Oh yeah, it's the WHO not the WHAT.

at 7/20/2007 10:21 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone discussing wins and losses is a troll. It has absolutely zero to do with anything. This is about BEHAVIOR and how Goodell responds to it.

Levi should be suspended for not being a man and taking out that weasel porter.

Levi needs to be cut. Not tough enough for the QUEEN city.

The cops must be dolphins fans or the video must not agree with what we have read.
Has anyone seen the video?

The cops are dolphin fans or the video is wrong
