O'Neal, Houshmandzadeh miss voluntary practice

Cornerback Deltha O'Neal and wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, both projected starters, missed the Organized Team Activity practice today. They were the only two players who had missed previous OTA practices prior to the mandatory minicamp during the weekend, which they both had attended.

OTA practices are voluntary.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice that a theme of the offseason is that all Bengals players and coaches "have something to prove."

"We've had a good offseason, as much as you can do football without pads," Lewis said. "We have little bit of time before training camp and the preseason games. Those are things you build upon."

Safety John Busing, who had missed on-field time with a hamstring injury, was back on the field today.

Any reason cited? Perhaps both of them think that they don't make enough money to participate in these camps.

Clearly they have much more important things going on. Like... grocery shopping or picking the kids up from ballet.

The rest of the players, coaches, support personnel just happened to be free today.

To say that O'Neal had a subpar season is being generous. When he didn't look lost, he looked old and tired. You would think he'd want to impress the coaches and the rest of the league (the way he's talking, he's just chasing $$) in hopes of a better contract.
Hey Delta, don't forget who rescued you from the Broncos doghouse and gave you an opportunity to show yourself. One season does not make you a champ bailey. you are and always will be an enigmatic, moody, and inconsistant player, until you put together a string of good years.

O'Neal thinks he isn't getting paid enough after a pathetic 2006 season with one interception. He is not good for this team, especiall with the off the field incidents. Not sure what TJ is doing? ... what are people saying in Cincy?

Lets see. Can somebody remind me of what the definition of voluntary is? If you want them to show up maybe you should call it mandatory or something like that. I don't know just a thought. These are people not slaves, I believe slavery was outlawed. Let me know when they miss something mandatory. As far as we know they can be in the lab training with other super trainers and atheletes like I know that some players do in the offseason. Half you fans dont even show up to the games. Even when you are there, you aren't. Our fanbase is a freaking joke. No loyalty. Give our guys the benefit of doubt.

Not life and death about Delta but he is not going to make it for the 2 years remaining on his contract... Hopefully he has a good year (unlike 06) and we can trade him after Hall has a year under his belt and JJ has one more.I see 4th round pick for Delta after this year and someone gives him an extension. Thank god the bengals didn't rework his deal after 05. Can you imagine how he would act WITH a huge contract? Good move Bengals.

That one post proclaiming the "voluntary" and comparing it to slavery-just a foolish post. No one is calling guys who make 7figure salaries "slaves" any time soon. Yes, the camps are officially "voluntary" but you would like all of your players to do everything they can to better themselves in a team way and with the team. Not life and death but doesn't exactly warm your heart either. The slavery comparison and ripping our fan base--off base and foolish...
