Thurman call now unlikely today

Reversing field on an earlier possibility that the NFL would announce its decision whether to reinstate Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman today, it now appears like that move will wait until Tuesday or Wednesday.

"Nothing to report on Odell," a league spokesman wrote this afternoon in an e-mail.

Thurman applied for reinstatement early last month from his year-long suspension for a third violation of the NFL substance abuse policy. He previously had been suspended for a second violation, and his third offense was a DUI on Sept. 25.

The Bengals might wait to announce Thurman's reinstatement at their annual pre-training camp luncheon Tuesday over the noon hour at Paul Brown Stadium. A decision is expected to come from the league in time for Thurman -- should he be reinstated -- to report on time to training camp Thursday. The Bengals' first practice is 3 p.m. Friday.

IF Thurman is reinstated, Do you think he will practice on Special Teams. Since the starting positions on the LB'ing core seem to be set, putting him on special teams might fill a void currently facing Special teams. I don't have any stats by me right now, but was he involved much in ST in 05'. I would like to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

That is good news, well, i hope he is reinstated and rejoins the team. The Bengals need help at the LB positions. Why nobody posts on your blog boggles the mind, i think you do a great job at providing us with up to date Bengals information, unlike, um, come lately Hobson.

For crying out loud, the league has to have been following his progress, why in the world is it taking so long to reinstate him, we need him, and he has cleaned up his act, they need to quit playing around and reinstate him.

There's no pressure to have him reinstated now. Training camp has not yet started. I wouldn't be surprised to see them wait until day 1 of camp or beyond. Just to make the point that they control his destiny, and will hold him responsible for his actions. They'll get more attention to the policy if he's held out a little bit. I think he'll be back by the end of next week.

It would not surprise me if the Commish denied Odell's reinstatement on the heels of the Michael Vick situation.

Hopefully Goodell doesn't make the decision in a vacuum and takes it on a case-by-case basis, but I'd be willing to bet he's not in the giving spirit.

Fingers crossed.

It's ridiculous that the league acted swiftly (and prematurely in my opinion) on Vick, but have sat on Thurman's reinstatement. What's the harm. Reinstate him and let him know that if he even gets a speeding ticket, that's it for him. It will be a good story for Goddell and the NFL (which they need thanks to Ron Mexico and his band of dog fighters).
