They left off Shaun Smith to Cleveland and Jason Berryman as cut.

On paper, it appears that the talent of the players lost, is greater than that of the players retained/acquired.

I disagree that the player talent lost is better than what was retained or acquired. I think this is more of a case where the Bengals had to re-sign Justin Smith becuase they are already busy plugging holes in other areas of the defense. That money spent on Smith could have gone to other areas but once again there are not enough free agents in their prime interested in coming to Cincinnati for whatever reason.

Brooks and the draft of Hall are far better than James and Kaesviharn. Neither were pro-bowl guys if not middle of the road players at best. The loss of LB's are hurting which is why the release of Simmons seems odd but that was from all accounts a salary cap move more so than talent though he was definitely on the down side of his career. They did bring in Hartwell which is nice and resigned Miller and Johnson but neither of those guys are huge impact players. To me unless they know Thurman is coming back that group will be again a middle of the road at best and that doesnt work in the league when your d-backs and d-line are there as well.

Looks like another stellar off-season by Marvin. Glad he's so happy with his mediocre 8-8 team that no big moves are needed. Who dey.

This is the "gamble to make it to the playoffs this year" formula. Bring in hungry players on the cheap for a year. If everything works out, great. If not, the team is going to be exploded next year. Look, T.J. will want a new contract next year, they won't re-sign Smith (which I think is a mistake), Henry, Thurman, Perry, and Pollack will probably be dumped, and we will have at least 11 draft picks. We will lose almost all the Free Agents next year, Robinson and Thornton will not be re-signed due to age, most backups will be gone unless they are RFA's or younger. The team gets blown up after this season. And next year we still will not draft a TE (Value is never there because M.L. does not value the position).

Why does M.L. value Thornton so much? Put the kids in. It's not like Thornton gets sacks (like Smith), or tackles (like Smith and Simmons), or plugs the running game (like, well, nobody on the D).

Bengals should have been better last year, but I expect 8-8 this year again. After a horrible start. Problem is, team was snake-bit last year, and everyone around them that was good last year got better.

My predictions:

Best case 9-7, first round playoff loss. (New England, Indy, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh are too good this year to stink.

Worst case 5-11. It seems like Buffalo always has our number, the NFC West is tough this year, Romeo is fighting for his job, we always find a way to lose to Tennessee, Cards has Whisenhut and what's-his-name from Pittsburgh. At least we might have a winning December!

That last guys predictions are WAY too harsh... Steelers are the one's that look like 7-9 (tops)to me. He is saying that after this year the team will be imploded--- well, this is the NFL. There is a 53 man roster and only 45 can dress on Sundays... We will have 11 draft picks next year so--- yeah, there will be turnover. Always is.(No, we are not resigning sam adams when he is 36)
