Pick No. 253 is Notre Dame safety

The Bengals added safety Chinedum Ndukwe from Notre Dame in the seventh round. He improved against the run in 2006 with 98 tackles. He is 6-1 1/2, 206 pounds and is the second safety drafted today by Cincinnati.

Counting linebacker Ahmad Brooks from the 2006 supplemental draft, the Bengals used five of their eight picks on defensive players.

If this guy has that kind of size at safety and speed, why wasn't he rated higher? He appears to be a prototype safety.

He needs substantial coaching. He's a converted wide receiver who only switched to safety, and still lacks a lot of fundamentals. He's a project, but has upside in the future, and possible special teams use now.

He was 2 picks before Mr. Irrelevant, so if he doesn't pan out, it's no big loss.

Fun fact: he was Quinn's roommate at ND.

Another player I saw play a lot (ND student). Ndukwe has all the athletic ability in the world. He was Brady Quinn's star WR in high school and converted to FS in college. He projects as a SS in the pros. He started hsi junior year, and had a nose for the ball, comming up with many (5? it seemed like it) key fumble recoveries. He has good leaping ability, and can bring down circus interceptions, but still needs to improve in coverage. He was a star WR, however, so he is intellectually very sound, and has an advantage diagnosing routes. He needs to be a bit more fluid in man-to-man coverage, but is a beast againt the run. He will benefit greatly from playing SS instead of FS, although Marvin likes to have his safties play interchangibly.

He was stuck at FS because Zibikowski (who should be playing LB) is the SS for ND. When ND faced option teams, Zibikowski moved into a Lb/S hybrid position, and Ndukwe took over at SS and was VERY effective.
