Bengals bringing in LB Earl Everett as free agent

The Bengals will populate their offseason roster with around a dozen college free agents, players who were not among the 255 drafted Saturday and Sunday.

A source in Tallahassee, Fla., said tonight that former Florida linebacker Earl Everett is headed to Cincinnati to sign a rookie free agent contract with the Bengals.

Everett was projected at one time to be as high as a third-round pick. He is an inside linebacker who had 85 tackles last season for the Gators, in addition to a sack and six tackles for loss.

Who cares about Earl Everret when we could have picked up a solid LB or DT instead of drafting a shotgun QB who is going to be riding the pine for 3 years.
We needed a VETERAN QB who won't get spooked when he has to jump in when the QB gets hurt.
Our Defense needs bodies. young, talented, raw personnel that they can mold. A total waste of the 4th round pick. The guy from Bengals.com had been defending the chris perry pick for the past 2 years, and now he's defending the Irons pick. It may all work out in the end, but I am begining to lose faith in marvin lewis. I hope I am wrong.

Oh yeah, that's what the Bengals need, another back seven guy who can't tackle. Be still my heart.

They HAVE to be planning on Odell Thurman being back, don't they? There's no other explanation I can see for this odd drafting.

This a great pick up. This guy has speed and a great hart. The fact that they did not have to use a draft pick to get him is awsome. He is going to start in 3 years I think you can count on that. Great pick up. As for not being able to tackle he seemed to do alright in the national championship chasing down Troy smith. He was the guy running him down with no helmet when is the last time we had a guy with heart like that.

Do you know what happened to cause him to drop from a 3rd round pick to a UFA? Did he do something, or just get worse? Hopefully he hasn't peaked just yet.
And I agree, they must be bringing Odell back, or they would have been looking for his replacement in this draft. For all the tough talk, it would be very tough to let a young playmaker like that go.

You have to remember that Ahmad Brooks should be counted as a LB draft pick. And the veteran QB you're looking for is Doug Johnson. They save a bunch of money by drafting a guy, and they feel comfortable if Johnson has to step in should something happen to Carson. Stop freaking out about Marvin Lewis, he's done a good job, and last year was omittable because of the ridiculousness of injuries combined with legal woes. You can't blame those on Marvin. No matter if Odell is coming back, but with Brooks, Jeanty, Miller, LJ, and Hartwell, they like their LB depth right now.

Lose your faith? Just jump off the wagon. We will find the real gem.

I was hoping that we would give Everett a go... huge upside to this kid. I think Marvin can develop him and we will see him start down the road.
This draft wasn't flashy, but the Bengals took what they could. Hall should be solid and Irons will probably surprise people, as most Auburn RBs do.

You should feel lucky to get a player as good as earl. I have watched him all the way through high school. He is one player that you won't have to worry about getting in trouble. The guy was raised to be a gentalman. He should have been picked up by somebody better than the Bengals

Being a Gator fan and watching the Gators closely for years, I was surprised that Mr. Everett did not get drafted. I think he has great potential, and I believe the Bengals fans will recognize this in the near future.

Earl Everett is a great pick and he will be a great asset for the Benagals. In still shocked that he did not get picked during the draft but as we all know everything happens for a reason and who know what the future has in store for him!!! Im rooting for you Earl Everett! Congratulations!

Earl did not get worse. He has never been in trouble. I am his aunt we were surprised as well when he went undrafted. All these teams were calling him but it never materialized. I think he was undrafted because there were more important positions that the teams needed to fill. This kid is the most humble and talented individual you would want to meet. The Bengals fans will not be disappointed.

How can anyone argue with Earl Everett's aunt ? ;)

Several of the scouting sites had him going in round 2 but possibly slipping to the second day.

As weak and as thin as the Bengasl are at LB, bringing in a young free agent who can play is definitely a good thing.

I met Earl back in early April in the airport in DC. He was a very humble respectable young man and I think this was a very good pick up for the Bengals. That is coming from a Big Vols fan, too. He should have went in round two or three. I wished my beloved Steelers had picked him with one of their picks. Good Luck Earl! Like I said in DC, I am looking forward to seeing you play on Sundays...JHH

The Bengals will be well advised to recall Mr Earl Everett back as a practice squad player or as a NFL Europe player, if not on the active roster, before some other team snatch him up. This young man is an idea NFL player, Role model and all around decent, respectful young man. Cousin Al

I have seen Earl Everett develop into what I believe as a great athletic player. The Kid has heart. Nobody can forget the National Championship, and the no helmet tackle. He has heart, he has the ability, and he will get the job done. Brandon Siler once said in an interview that Earl was probably the most athletic individual in the back field. I think the Bengals will regret not signing him to atleast the practice sqaud, because some other team will pick him up and he will be the one in a few years hurting them. I might be partial, because I have been around Earl all through his High School Career, but I know that if given the chance, he will get the job done and make any coach proud that they have him on the team. Plus he is a great role model for kids, he has been at South Sumter High School with Clinton Hart of the Chargers putting on a mini football camp for little kids and he is what the NFL need for role models, someone kids strive to be and look up to. He has my respect and which ever team he ends up playing for, will have my support, because they made a great pick. He had a little hard luck in training camp due to an injury, if he was good to go, he would have been signed and probably not just to the practice squad, but they have to start some where. Great Guy, Great Player, Great Athlete, and Great Role Model.
