Browns bust bank for Steinbach
The Cleveland Browns wanted Eric Steinbach badly and paid for him.
The fifth-year guard signed a seven-year deal for $49.5 million with the Browns today. He receives $17 million in guaranteed money and $23 million over the first three years.
All of Steinbach's numbers better those paid by Minnesota to former Seattle guard Steve Hutchinson a year ago.
Hutchinson, like Steinbach, is a left guard.
The Browns liked Steinbach coming out of the 2003 draft but selected center Jeff Faine instead.
Four years later, the Browns finally got Steinbach.

This might be it for me as a Bengals fan. I've loyally followed this team since 1974 and can only take so much. After reading today that Mike brown and company could have re-signed Eric Steinbach for $5.2 million per season and still didn't I know this franchise is going nowhere. Mark my words we will regret losing Eric Steinbach bigtime.
To anonymous at 9:21: Shut up, you're not a fan, you're just someone who likes to complain. We real fans might not like losing Steinbach, but it's not the end of the world. You probably said the same line of junk when we let Jeff Blake go.
Thank you 9:57. This is a loss, but not one that we can't handle. That's why Lewis drafts for the future. Whitworth was drafted to replace the O-line guy that could not be resigned(out of Anderson, Jones and Steinbech). Eric will be va very good gaurd/tackle for the Browns, but we have much bigger needs and paying him 5.2 mil per season would not have been a good choice.
5.2 million... then we wouldn't have enough dough for studs like Justin Smith - I mean...wow that is pretty dumb :(
6-10 could be reality next year
"Mark my words we will regret losing Eric Steinbach bigtime. "
You might, but Im sure the Bengals will be fine with Andrew Whitworth replacing him. Steinbach will be more versatile, but Whitworth will eventually be the better left guard.
10:55, 6-10 next year? you must be smoking 5.2 million worth of crack.
I see New England is ready to sign Adalius Thomas. I guess it's okay, we still have justin smith for 8.6 million(snark!). Looks like Reggie Kelly will be gone now too. So much for comparing what the Bengals do to the NE model.
Who says we could have gotten him for 5.2 mill? Last time I checked the Browns are giving him over 7 mill per year. We are already paying our two tackles big money so why would be pay a 3rd guy tackle money? Time to spend some of that money on defense.
I have to agree...
Losing Stenbach is tough, but I wouldn't wrap him up in a 7 year, $49 million deal. The Bengals have some young talent on the O-line, so hopefully that will develop.
Defense has long been the Bengals weakness. We don't need a number 1 defense, but a top 15 defense, along with the Bengals talented offense could make them a serious contender.
To the idiot that posted at 9:57p.m telling me to shut up and that I'm not a fan. Sir you are the idiot, you probably haven't been a fan of this team for more than a few years, don't tell me that I just like to complain, I've been thru Hell and back with this team and your post is highly naive since you obviously don't know me from Adam. As for the Bengals having the opportunity to re-sign Eric Steinbach at $5.2 million per season here is the quote that can be found at www.bengals.com
"Bechta said he would have taken $5.2 million per year from the Bengals, but said he knew as early as October any deal was dead. He has worked extensively with the Bengals front office, including executive vice president Katie Blackburn, director of business development Troy Blackburn, and vice president of player personnel Paul Brown that included Steinbach’s rookie contract and says he’s had a good experience".
“There was just a philosophical difference on the part of management on what to pay Eric as opposed to other positions,” Bechta said. “Even though we couldn’t get it done, Katie, Troy and Paul have done nothing but treat me with respect and I walked away with a positive feeing about them
Hey 11:47, you are true fan? You're just a trouble maker.
If you're such a "true fan" then why did you write the exact same opening note under the Wilkins post as you did as this post? All you did was change the name a $ amount.
You're just looking to start arguments.
Anon 11:47PM, I know Adam, and you're not him. And you are also a pot stirrer, fan or no. This decision was a no-brainer.
2/02/2007 was absolutely correct. Mike Brown proved himself useless, once again. I grew up eith the Bengals and have no lyalty to any other teams, but why be a fan of such stupidity? Steinbach @ $5.2M/year was a steal, plain & simple, period, without a doubt. That's the no-brainer. Steinbach is having fun WINNING in Cleveland. As a Bengals' fan, if that doesn't make you want to puke nothing will.
