Levi Jones out for Carolina; Whitworth new LT

Coach Marvin Lewis announced this afternoon that left tackle Levi Jones is out for the Carolina game Sunday with a left knee injury and might have to undergo arthroscopic surgery.

Rookie Andrew Whitworth will be the starting left tackle.

"We'll go as we finished (at Tampa Bay)," Lewis said.

Eric Steinbach will return to left guard, his normal position. Eric Ghiaciuc will play center.

Wide receiver Kelley Washington, who suffered a hamstring injury toward the end of the loss Sunday at Tampa Bay, also is out. His loss leaves the Bengals with three experienced, healthy wide receivers: Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Antonio Chatman.

Also out are center Rich Braham (knee), wide receiver Tab Perry (hip) and quarterback Anthony Wright (appendectomy).

Questionable are linebackers Rashad Jeanty (foot) and Brian Simmons (neck) and strong safety Dexter Jackson (ankle).

Tailback Chris Perry (ankle) is eligible to be brought off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. "Chris Perry has a chance to be cleared for action Wednesday," Lewis said.

The two other players on PUP, defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene and offensive lineman Adam Kieft, however, will not be brought up, Lewis said. The Bengals have a three-week window in which to make a decision.

Mark, this latest injury is just incredible. I can't remember a Bengals' team so shredded by injuries (I mean, who could expect a starting LB corps of Brooks, Johnson, and Miller?). Is this unusually bad, or am I a victim of selective memory?

I'm glad that you mentioned in one of your columns that Marvin has veto power over Batkowski's calls. Blaming Bratkowski means blaming Lewis. It would be nice if they could cut down on the false starts and illegal formations. It seems that they have to be conservative with a banged up line and little faith in Kenny Watson. Now they're down to 3 receivers, so Chris Perry better be ready for some action or they might get shut out Sunday.

Still, the defense played well with the patched up linebacker group, so it is way too early to write off the season. This is hardly a Dolphins situation.

Mark,

Are the bengals at all trying to make any trades with any other team and/or trying to pickup anybody in the free agent market. Whether it be a OL or DB? Do they still have some flexibility under the salary cap? Or did the signings this offseason squash any possiblity for any help?

The next 4 games will show the heart of this team and test this coaching staff. They are so thin in two huge places (LB and OL)that easily affect the rest of the units.
If they can win 2 out of the next 4 games (hopefully the ravens and the chargers) and hope rich and levi get back for the last 4 games, we will be ok.
What really scares me is the very real possibility that the porous line may allow a disasterous hit on carson?
