Utah DE Fanene is final Bengals' pick

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

Utah defensive end Jonathan Fanene was the Bengals' seventh and final pick of the NFL draft this afternoon (No. 233 overall).

Fanene, who is 6-3 1/2, 287 pounds, started 10 games for the Utes last season. He flashes strength, power and burst off the edge as a pass rusher. He does lack foot quickness and is considered a developmental project.

Fanene was the third defensive player drafted out of seven by the Bengals this weekend.

OK, I officially don't get about half the picks. Two receivers? Minimal run defense picks? Maybe there's more to Thurman (SI says he can't shake of blocks and misses tackles - didn't Lewis say this was already a problem on the team?), Pollack (sounds like they like his pass rush, not run defense), and Faene (again a pass rusher) than is immediately apparent.

I can see taking a C and OT. They need to build for the future there. Not sure these 2 were the BEST choices, but they don't look like bad choices.

I posted earlier and mentioned that I respect Marvin Lewis' ability and his previous drafts have gone very well. It will be interesting to see more info in the papers in the upcoming days on the "why's" of these choices.

I think the Bengals will be a good team this year. I hope they pick up some free agents in the next couple weeks that will create more competition in the core of the defense.

But then again, I'm not in the football business or in the media, so how much do I really know!

It sure seems the Bengals could have gotten a PR boost by drafting Munoz. Would the Bengals prefer headlines about litigation over seat licenses or a nice warm story about drafting their only hall of famers son? Seems a lack of loyalty here.

I am not looking for a warm and fuzzy story! I am looking for the best player available in the draft for the seven allotted slots!

Although I wish we had picked Munoz, I agree with Greg L....We need the best available people to help us get to the Super Bowl!!!!!

Exactly, who the crap cares about warm and fuzzy- we are talking football here. Obviously, the Bengals weren't the only team who passed on him so what does that tell you. I went to HS with Mike and I don't even think it was bad the Bengals passed up on him. I wish him luck but the Bengals did a great job picking potential contributors and adding depth.

I suspect there are issues with the backup wideouts. Lewis is a good poker player. I think Warrick will be looking for a new home, if he still able to play.

We definitely needed wideout help. As you said, I suspect Warrick will be released this year or next. Chad is our only definite lock. TJ showed great promise last year but needs to back it up with a repeat performance this year. Kelly Washington, Cliff Russell, and K. Walter haven't done much of anything. We definitely needed the depth at WR to provide Carson with the weapons he needs because the offense needs to be our strength next year. Here is hoping Henry and Perry can make a big impression!

I don't agree with the need for wideouts. Yes, PDub is good as gone, but Chad and TJ make a VERY serviceable duo. As for the comment that Kelley Washington hasn't done much of anything at all ... I disagree. Reggie Wayne didn't produce pro-bowl numbers his first few years either, but look at him now. Washington will be a good wideout for Cincinnati. Give him a little more time and a little credit for what he's already done.

Comparing Kelly Washington to Reggie Wayne is about as big a joke as I've heard on here. Washington is garbage and will never be on a Pro Bowl level like Wayne. He celebrates every catch like he's won the lottery for god sake. The Bengals needed WR depth and a kick returner. Henry provides WR depth and Perry is a great kick returner. Chad and TJ are a great duo but you need at least 3 good receivers in the NFL especially when you have no tight end!!!!

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Apr 25, 2005 — Tennessee offensive tackle Michael Munoz decided to quit football after he was not chosen in the NFL draft over the weekend, his father, NFL Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz said Monday.

The All-American started 46 games in his career despite injuries, including a torn rotator cuff that ended his senior year before the Southeastern Conference championship game in December.

Anthony Munoz said his son has not yet decided what he plans to do now.

John Clayton from ESPN said he believes Michael Munoz will change his mind and come back to play...and mentioned the Bengals.

I am really excited about the college free agent signing of Ben Wilkerson. I'd call it a steal, given that college coaches named him co-winner of the Rimington Award (shared with David Baas..drafted by SF), even after his knee injury.

With Eric C. and big Ben, we should be set after a fine career from Richie.

Who Dey!

I think the Bengals missed the boat by not drafting/signing DE Simon Fraser, The Ohio State University. Granted he had a down senior year, but he is a big guy that can rush the passer and stop the run.

To the guy who thinks comparing Reggie Wayne to Kelly Washington is a "joke":
I think if you read my comment again, you'll realize I wasn't comparing them as current players. I was simply suggesting we give Washington the same chance to develop as Wayne (and others) had.

Wayne's stats in his first two seasons ('01, '02):
76 catches, 1,061 yards, 4 TDs

Washington's stats in his first two seasons ('03, '04):
53 catches, 607 yards, 7 TDs

There's really not too big of a difference there, particularly with Washington coming into his rookie season still taking it easy from that neck injury. Washington is a bigger guy (give him 4 inches and about 30 pounds on Wayne) so he's not the type of wideout Wayne is, but I think you should give him the same time to make his mark.

I think Pdub is a special reciever with great run breaking ability. I do not think he is gone unless he is hurt permanent. I think Marvin wants the best players and he remembers how good Warrik was his first year. Henry could be another Rembert and not have the head for playing football just like the physically talented mentally challenged Rembert.
