Sixth-round pick is UCLA WR Tab Perry

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

The Bengals made their sixth-round pick (190 overall) this afternoon, former UCLA wide receiver Tab Perry.

Perry, who is 6-feet-2 1/2, 229 pounds, missed the 2003 season with academic problems (he said it was a case of Internet plagerism.) Both of his parents are from the Cincinnati area.

He had 22 receptions for 375 yards and three touchdowns last season. He is projected as a tough, reception receiver.

Don't really understand this pick. Why another wideout? I'm no scout, but to me Perry doesn't even look as good as his UCLA teammate Craig Bragg, who the Packers selected a few picks after Cincinnati in the sixth round.

I agree re: Craig Bragg - according to SI he also is a good punt returner.

While I respect Marvin Lewis' scouting and his last two drafts, you have to question taking two WRs when you have one of the best receiving corps in football and still need a DT and S for the run defense. There has to be more to this story than we know (like maybe they already know/suspect Warrick won't be back).

They passed on two quality DTs (CJ Mosely & Jason Jefferson) and two quality run stopping S (Ernest Shazor and Jim Leonhard - who also returns punts) for this pick . They also could have taken DT Anttaj Hawthorne in the 5th.

And not to mention Michael Munoz. Thats the kind of story I want to see - the Bengals showing some respect to Anthony and the quality of both of their characters. Maybe next round or as a free agent...

I'm hoping at least one of these will be available next round (except all the DTs who are already gone).

Tab Perry has unbelievable ability- Bragg is smaller and not as fast. Perry is one of the most physical receivers in the entire draft. He has big time ability if the Bengals coach him up. He is also a returner- Bragg and him split time. He had over 1500 return yards in college so I am sure he will be our new return man with his size and speed. Listen people, Marvin knows defense and knows people who will fit his system. If he saw someone he thought will be good and fit our system, yes he would have drafted them so get a clue. And yes, it is obvious they are going to dump Warrick and his salary know which is also a good move. With Henry and Perry, the Bengals now may actually have the makings of one of the best receiver cores in the NFL. Marvin has done a great job in this draft. You shouldn't try to fill holes if the right players aren't there so Marvin added depth and the best players available!

Its good to hear about the return ability of Perry. I'm not big on college football so I'm basing alot of my thoughts on the bazillions of reviews out there on the various players. They say he has talent but I don't remember seeing one talking about him as a returner. Maybe I missed it.

I'm big on attitude, determination, and other unmeasurables as being important. We don't need another Dillon (or Chad Johnson for that matter) attitude on the team. Seems like Lewis is big on that too so he obviously sees something in Perry that others don't.

I have huge respect for Marvin Lewis and hope he stays here a long time. That doesn't mean we can't ask questions on his choices. I'm sure he has very good reasons for his picks and it will be interesting to hear him talk about them. I love all the re-signings (Rudy, TJ, etc) and other off season moves. No question in my mind we will finally see a winning season.

No need to tell us we need to 'get a clue'. If any of us (including you) were all that great, we would be one of the guys doing the drafting instead of making comments about it afterward.

Thanks Marvin for giving us a team to be proud of again! Go Bengals!

What happened to Michael Munoz?? He didn't even get drafted!!! Although, I will say that Marvin did draft rather well.

To the guy I said "get a clue to", I did not mean to be harsh but I greatly dislike misinformed people who make snap judgements about things they clearly know nothing about. You even admitted you aren't big on college football and you are relying only on what you read from "experts". The truth is I was just backing up Marvin with facts. Tab Perry was UCLA's kick returner and Craig Bragg was UCLA's punt returner. Tab Perry is bigger and was clocked with a faster 40 time at the combine. Those are facts not opinions. He may do nothing at all but I think we owe Marvin the benefit of the doubt at this point. Give him a break- that is all I am saying. He hasn't let us down yet and hopefully never will.

We needed more receivers? Thats probably place that needed the LEAST help.

You guys crack me up!! Like any of you have "a clue" what it takes to put together a pro team. At least most of the "experts" you mention have some reason for being called that.

I'm sorry but you don't have to be an expert to know and understand football. Many people who aren't "experts" probably have as good of a chance predicting who will be good in the NFL. There is no science to it- just luck and gut instinct usually. The Bengals do need WR's though! Warrick is not healthy and they need to dump his salary. Kelly Washington is a bust (for god sakes he celebrates every catch he makes like he won the Super Bowl- what a joke). That leaves you with Chad and TJ. And we don't know for sure if TJ will have another great year or not. The Bengals definitely need to solidy the WR position for Carson to be successfull and everyone knows our has a better chance at being successfull than the defense so those picks were made to solidify that.

*our offense (sorry)

I hope so too but I am guessing they have. I think Perry was drafted as a kick returner more than anything though. The Bengals definitely need a good return man and he definitely has the ability to do that.

Looks like a possible tight end
in a few years if he can make the team
