UPDATED: Henry allowed to tryout

A judge has granted Chris Henry's request that will allow the former Bengals wide receiver to travel to other cities to tryout for other NFL teams, The Enquirer reports this morning.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Henry said he would like to play for his hometown New Orleans Saints or the Cowboys. Of course, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to Henry in April 2007 -- when he suspended the then-Bengals wide receiver for the first eight games of the 2007 season -- that another violation of the league's personal conduct policy could result in additional punishment up to banishment from the NFL.

Wow... We can suspend Odell Thurman for 2 years for DUI charges, and petty theft, on 2 arrests, but we let Chris Henry have a field day with DUI, drug charges, underage consumption, blah blah blah... Apparently you can do whatever you want when you have Henry's attorney. Why would you want this wanna-be thug on your team, you're not going to change him. I think whatever team he goes to should have to pay restitution to the Bengals for all our mishaps and having to deal with this clown-shoe... I think as a deal breaker, he should play for free, to show he wants to play, and not just play around. I hope he tries to get froggy with me someday, I'd leap all over that opportunity, I don't care how thug he thinks he is...

Is it common practice in Ohio for criminals to be released from house arrest so that they can go to job interviews?

I guess you can do whatever you want w/ Henry's attorney. Why doesn't the NFL just kick him out so they don't have to deal with him anymore. While their at it, kick out Packman Jones as well.

I guess we will be seeing Chris Henry in a Dallas or Raider uniform next year. Those 2 clubs don't care what kind of rap sheet their players have ... as long as they produce on the field.

Dallas still needs a WR.....

This absolutely stinks, if the Bengal's had not released him, anyone wanna bet the Commish would have dropped the axe on him already, but now, since teams like Dallas and Washington and Philly might need him, wanna bet he skates?
How convenient it will be when Pac-Man gets reinstated too, we know that is coming too. Goodell's policy wasn't about discipline, it was another way to slap his nemesis Mikey Boy around for daring to speak out against his and his predecessor's lopsided revenue sharing agreement with the players union.

His only chance to revive his NFL career is to go to the Steelers. If he signs there the commissioner will give him a very light punishment or no punishment at all --> see Joey Porter x-beloved Steeler of the commissioner who was found guilty of an assault and not a DUI. He didn't even get a suspension. My guess, if Henry signed with Pitt, he only receive at most a 2 - 4 game suspension. Just enough time to allow him to get ready/warmed-up for the Bengals game Week 7.

He can try out in any city he wants - once the Commish reviews this case, Henry won't be in any NFL uniform for at least the 2008 season, and maybe never again.

Hey "House of Cards"

Reminds us of the "Pete Rose, Bart Giamatti" battles... lol

Relax... Goodell is just waiting to see whu has the "guts" and foolishness to sign him before he slaps a year long (or longer)suspension on him. You won't see Chris playing this year. the comish just hasn't bothered suspending yet as he isn't on a team. Can't suspend a non-player!

Goodell is ON RECORD as saying that Chris Henry's suspension in 2007 was his LAST CHANCE. If Henry is CONVICTED of anything, Goodell has to suspend him for life, to avoid losing all credibility.

I was having some fun reading articles about this that try to slam the Bengals for not cutting him sooner blah blah blah. What is funny is that they don't knock the teams interested in him and one went as far to say how he could end up being the Eagles best option at WR.
Any team that signs him should be treated worse than the Bengals were two years ago. These teams know he has a record, he didn't when he came here.

wouldn't be PFT.com, would it mindriot? I agree, its funny how when the Bengal's do/did it, they get/got blasted, while its OK for any other team to "take a chance"; the other thing that mental midget can't get thru his skull is the fact that the Bengal's actually went way above and beyond the call with Smokey McPot in trying to help get him straight. We can fault Mikey for giving second chances so easily, but we can't say anyone wanted this to work out more than he did, and not just for monetary reasons either.

The article forgot to mention that Henry's interview was for a grill cook at Willie Anderson's Fat Burger location in LA.

Would Henry get fined by the league's uniform police every week due to his house arrest ankle device not being part of the uniform?

Just curious.

I belive that their are teams that will need a good reciever like Henry like: the Raider, the Ravens, the Dolphins, the Chiefs, the Titans, and the Bears. He might be able to be the #1 guy in most of those places. He is still a nasty wideout and a playmaker. I think that the Chielfs and the Bears will fight very hard for him.

I have no problem with him trying out for the WARREN CORRECTIONAL Chiefs or Lima Lions.

I am no fan of Chris Henry's behavior nor his former college teammate Pac Man Jones. But the comments I have been reading border on racist implications, and a short memory. Remember Former Dodger pitcher Steve Howe, and the many chances he has been given, or Actor Robert Downy Jr now starring in the hit movie Iron man. remember how many times he has been arrested and let out to do Movies?. I do not approve of Maurice Clarett's actions, But he did have support from former Ohio state players some now in the NFL for the fake jobs from boosters. No work performed just stop by and pick up the pay check. Coach Tressel/Ohio St A.D. States no such actions exists. Even Roger Clemens is being accused of having an affair when he was 28 with C/R Singer Mindy McCreedy when she was age 15. People have human fralty's, and people are quick to judge, and throw stones. Instead of attacking the individual, why not fix the problem @ the root of the whole thing the hypocritical NCAA, and colleges, and coaches who act with less integrity then the students they recruit. raise the standards, and don't get excited by the vertical leap, height, and stamina of the individual. colleges invest in hands on tutoring, to make the flawed individuals more inclusive. Professional leagues, don't let players into your league without degrees, or have them complete their college time.

dragon, you cannot seriously be tossing out the race card, can you??? Please do not minimize the bad behavior of Mr. Nice-Guy by blaming The Man. Nobody holds a gun to this clown's head and makes him go out and misbehave time after time. I do agree with you that coaches at the HS and College level should shoulder a fair amount of blame for not slapping knuckleheads like Smokey into their place at a much younger age, and that if they had, maybe we wouldn't all be shaking our collective heads right now. But that doesn't take away from Smokey's own obligation to grow up and act responsibly, and conform to the rules and norms of society.
For the record, I thought Steve Howe was a turd too, likewise Roger Clemens. And FWIW, I don't hear many people saying anything positive about Rocket-man either, so that should just about torpedo your race theory.
