Injury updates, Lewis news conference

Safety Madieu Williams has a thigh bruise -- the result of a knee in the top of the left leg from Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward -- and is likely to miss practice Wednesday.

Center Eric Ghiaciuc (knee strain) and wide receiver Glenn Holt (shoulder strain) might be limited in practice Wednesday, coach Marvin Lewis said this afternoon.

Right tackle Willie Anderson (knee) has "an opportunity to play." The 3-9 Rams will play Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium. They are tied with San Francisco and Atlanta for the worst record in the NFC.

The Bengals are 4-8 and essentially eliminated from playoff contention. The Steelers lead the AFC North at 9-3, followed by the 7-5 Browns. Ten AFC teams have a better record than the Bengals.

The 2007 is the first season since 2004 and just the second in five years under Lewis that the Bengals have been out of contention this early.

What to play for?

"The chance to win four more games," Lewis said. "They'll be resilient. I don't think they know what place they're in. This is professional athletics. Either guys will be professional of they won't be here."

Will the Bengals start playing younger players to see what they can do in an effort to build for next season?

"No," Lewis said. "Next year has nothing to do with right now. None of us is promised next year."

NOTES:

-- The Bengals defensive performance in the past four games is the best in terms of yards allowed since Games 8-11 of the 2001 season. In the past four, the Bengals have allowed no more than 305 yards in one game and have allowed an average of just 277.3.

-- Tight end Daniel Coats said he was not injured Sunday night and that he was inactive because of a coach's decision.

-- Wide receiver Chad Johnson is believed to be in Miami today for the funeral of former Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

I just watched Marvin Lewis's Press Conference. In case you missed it. It went like this, better coaching, blah, blah, blah, do better, blah, blah, blah, were not consistant, blah, blah, blah.

WE SUCK!!!

Parcells or Cowher would have even this team at 8-4.

Fire Lewis or remain mediocre (actually mediocre is too generous)

yes mediocre is too nice. . .I think the word ghastly fits the bill.

Isn't Bill Cowher available? And who should our first draft pick be?

What else do you expect Lewis to say? No one will tell it like it is. Not Cowher, not Parcells. The idea is to be as politically correct as possible so the media (and the fans) can not spin his words.

Obviously, you are a bandwagoner and do not remember the pre-Lewis days. This season was a wash when the Bengals lost 90% of their linebackers.

Back off Lewis and accept the season for what it is. Lewis has done more for this team than anyone else (other than Chad Johnson) in recent years.

Dennis Gilgallon

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be much more interesting and newsworthy (and provide more growth journalistically speaking) to look into how the Bengals go in two short years from being the toast of the NFL, to being toast.

What did they do or not do during the off-season, what happens during games, what players seem to perform and which don't? Just a thought.

I will put our entire family christmas budget (about $100 for four people) against Chad Johnson NOT practicing on Thursday.

Any takers?

Bunch of BUMS. Bring in Cowher!

They won't fire Marvin, that would mean they'd have to pay him for the two more years he has on his contract and we all know how much Mike Brown likes his money. Get used to 2 more seasons just like this one, or worse.

I am a true bengals fan and would not accept cowher as a head coach. Anybody but cowher, that just doesn't sit right with me. Only a fair weather fan would even ask for that. I could understand why Dallas would accept T.O., but its too much to ask of me to take in cowher, lets just change the name to the Cincinnati Steelers why don't ya.

Maybe you all don't remember 2002 and previous. I'll take these current bengals over that. Maybe we have to take two steps back (2006 & 2007) to get to where we want to go (superbowl). My only concern with Marvin's comments about next year is that it should be a great opportunity to start the evaluation on your current players. Who is staying, who do we need to upgrade.
