Post-game quotes, notes

PITTSBURGH -- The Bengals were 24-10 losers Sunday night at Heinz Field to the Steelers. They are 4-8, meaning they will have a non-winning season for the 16th time in the past 17 years as a franchise.

PASS-HAPPY: The Bengals stubbornly stayed with their pass-oriented offense on a bad, slow field Sunday night, though quarterback Carson Palmer threw high several times under increasing pressure from Pittsburgh’s zone-blitz defense. Palmer ended up 17-for-44 passing for 183 yards. He was 6-for-7 for 57 yards on the first drive but just 11 of 37 for 126 yards after that.

"I didn’t throw good balls," Palmer said. "The field threw off timing on routes. I failed to adjust."

STATS: The Bengals ran 23 times for 74 yards, a 3.2-yard per carry average.
They called 45 pass plays, including one sack of Palmer.

MARVIN LEWIS SAID: "I think that we were going to run our offense. We missed some throws, and that ended up somewhat being the difference."

REAL ESTATE: The Bengals squandered outstanding field position all night. Their average drive start was their 44-yard line. Three times the Bengals started drives in Pittsburgh territory – at the 28, 25 and 17.

Wake up, Cincinnati. Time for a NEW coach. Accountability starts at the top.

How do we get a coach in here that cares?....I mean about football

How do we get less of Marvin on the sideline pouting and mumbling to himself?

Two more Madden lines of the night,,,I think he's got one more challenge, why wouldn't you use it with six minutes left and down two scores; If you're at 4th and 17 and you run a 14 yard pattern, you're not in the game.

Dexter Jackson shouldn't play another down this year

TJ is one more fit from being Chad.

Chad shouldn't play next week. Sit him to make a point.

Where is Chris Henry??

How good must our 4th round pick have been from this year? If you can't push Dexter and Madeau, you suck.

Carson needs a little more air on his ball. His receiver's are 12 ft tall, yes?

We are the front runner to keep Miami from going winless

Looks like the loss to to Buffalo, Cleveland or Arizona is a meaningless loss. Stay home for the rest of the season like I do. But NOOOO.. you fools will be out there rooting them on while freezing your butts off. Get a Life!

Why are the Bengals still running Rudy Johnson, when Kenny Watson has a better yards per carry average? And it seems to me the coaching staff can’t motivate their players. Run Watson please and stop wasting talented player’s careers on coaches who can’t coach.

Bengals have three good receivers. So do the Patriots. Even Dallas and the Colts have a few. Many teams have a few stars at wide receiver. STEELERS HAVE ONE! ONE! JUST ONE! HOW DOES HINES WARD GET SO WIDE OPEN IN THE END ZONE.

Hines ward had to wave his hands a few moments to get attention. He waited so long in the end zone by himself, I thought he was trying to call for a taxi.

It was funny to listen to the announcers. "This is the time they like to throw to their only 'go to guy' Hines Ward to get a TD." Well GOLLY GEE, look at that, they just threw a touchdown to Hines Ward. Everyone watching knew it. All the people in the stadium knew where it was going. But the Bengals didn't. Inexcusable.

Fire the coaches please. PLEASE!!!

"I think that we were going to run our offense.

That's one of the dumbest things EVER uttered by an NFL coach.

Fire this incompetent boob NOW!

I like the rush/pass stat as an indicator of what happened with the Bengals. They had 23 rushes and 44 passes. The Steelers had 35 rushes and 32 passes.

The Bengals had to guess, with about a 50/50 chance of being right, whether the Steelers were running or passing.

The Steelers could predict 2/3 of the time that the Bengals would be passing. (And it was worse if you take out the first scoring drive.)

In short, EVERYONE knows that the Bengals are passing....even on a sloppy day. How can that not help the Steelers' Defense? Anyone's Defense?

They all suck. You bunch of LOSERS!

This one definitely gets hung on Palmer. WR's were open on many occassions, watching balls sail over their heads to high to get a hand on. While I would be the first one to place Palmer in the top 3 QB's in all of the NFL, he's played poorly in 2 of the last 3 games. Games that supposedly counted, games that were important, games that were deemed as "Playoffs"...Hopefully he rights his ship over the next 5 games beating up on lesser opponents and uses that as a spring board into next season.

Yet another of a mounting total of subpar performances by Palmer this year, something that exposes him as a very ordinary quarterback. A star quarterback steps up. Palmer only goes with the flow -- performing well when the team does, never excelling when the team at large does.

As horrible as the defense has been this year, when the Bengals win, it's because of the defense and NOT Palmer.

I actually didn't have a problem with them throwing the ball. In fact, I think some of the attempts to establish the run early held us back. WRs should have an advantage in those conditions. Just ask Hines Ward. I don't think Clearly Carson did not have a very good game. Missing the two short third downs early on bad over-throws really turned the momentum.

"The Bengals were 24-10 losers Sunday".....

Just take out the score and the word Sunday and you summarize the past 20 years well....."The Bengals were losers"

How can anyone really support this franchise and have any amount of self respect????

TJ is an emabarassment. Cries like a woman all game long. Just one of many LOSER sub-plots on this pathetic team.

I'm not sure why, perhaps Marvin's arrogance and condescention, perhaps the lack of effort, the lack of talent in some areas or the unfulfilled promise, but for the first time in 27 years, I don't care about the draft, or mini camp or training camp or certainly the end of the season.
I am not mad, I am not upset, I am not hopeful.
I am now totally indifferent to the team I've followed all my life. I just don't care about this group anymore.
Strange.

freaking idiots. its a sloppy field. you play sloppy field rules. first quarter, 3rd and 2 pass; wrong. 3rd and 3 pass; wrong. later in game 40 to 50 yrd field goal on 30 to 35 yard line run or pass twice you cant kick the ball off slop and d is still effective. it is impossible for a kicker to get a good clean lift when kicking off of slippery sod with no underpinning you cant plant your foot and ball is not stable. 3rd and fourth down territory go for it. palmer is unbielavable cant hit an open man (henry in a must have situation). with peripheral vision he can see there is no one within 10 yards of him. if he could just sidestep a little. great recievers who cant hold on to a ball. i understand when you make a cut on that crap when you cant keep your footing but not when the ball hits you in the hands. henry, dorsey, and watson only effective players on off. used sparsley bad idea. this is what happens when bad coaching meets bad players. total bs. mikey boy has to be sticking his fingers in the pie again or he still hasnt let go. the talent level on this team is unbelievable. i understand the line backing situation is still horrible but god damn it adjust, play to your strengths and not dwel on weakness.

The Bengals are a bad football operation. From Mike Brown all the way down to the lowest player on the roster they don't know how to win. The Steelers go into games expecting to win. The Bengals HOPE to win. Huge difference. But, the seats r full at PBS, so MB is happy.

How long has Mike Brown been the president of the Bemngals? We have had 16 of 17 seasons that are non-winning. It would be great if some local financial people that really want to win would purchase the Bengals. Mike Brown seems to have the emotion of a funeral director!!!

BengalinHouston

Nothing paostive to say about the Bengasl game last nite. Palmer is right. The Bangelas is not a good team. I also question the coaches dispositions with the game last nite. Two questionable touchdowns one to tkae points off of the steelers and one to put points to the bengals. No challenge? what a crap? I can see no questioning a questionable fumble in the middle of the field. Its okay.
My stocks are going really fast witht eh coaching staff espeicaiily marvin.

Palmer has to be the worst top 3 QB in the NFL. How can he be so highly touted and have so many &*^%$%^poor games. The OC is a joke. He can't see what's is available and make any adjustments. Eg. short passes in front of coverage when safeties are playing so deep. I will accept another losing record in 2008 IF the OC and DC are long gone and good coach- coordinators are in place.

did we not realize that it was 4th down, chad 4yards short on the sideline, then he just sorta stayed on the field like that was a nice third down pickup? down 14 with 5 minutes to play, pittsburgh punting inside their twenty, and dexter jumps on 4th down, defense recovers but we lose 2 minutes of football, only the bengals. i don't care if chris henry is nine feet tall and has spidey-sticky hands, cut him, was his uniform even dirty on sunday, in the mud and all? jump for the ball, block, haha, yeh right. carson is an average quarterback, that is all. i dont care if rudi has "earned" his starting position, he's one dimensional and he's not getting the job done on a losing football team, start watson. why is it when i watch the bengals, that i expect the other team to get things done, and i expect the bengals to dissapoint. teams around the league must love playing us. why with holmes out, why did ward play that much of a role in dismantling us, wouldnt we want to at least make someone besides ward make a play. why would we draft non-physical corners? i hate this team, i will nnot waste my sunday time on them anymore. how many opportunitys did we have on offense, and then on the previous page it mentions tj not holding on to the football, come now, tj plays every down, goes across the middle, blocks, you'd think it would read how do you beat anyone whn your qb completes %30 of his passes, or gee, when your running back gets 2 yards a carry....im done, second rate city, second rate sports teams, the banks, ha

Really, who cares anymore? It doesn't matter who's up next on the schedule, whether an opponent looks to be easy or hard, what the playoff chances are, even whether the uniforms are attractive or ugly. Being a Bengal fan is the story of waiting for something to go wrong - week after week, season after season. Successful teams (see: Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Cowboys, et al., year after year) always seem to make a play when it's needed, win a coach's challenge at a critical moment, catch a break at the right time, believe that something good is about to happen. Fans can count on that far more often than not. All of that is the exception, not the rule, in Bengaldom.

You know a Bengal will drop a pass, fumble a ball, commit a mindless penalty, run a wrong route, let a sure interception go through the hands, every time a game-changing play is at hand. You're sure the yellow flag will be thrown when they finally get a big gain, turnover, or a defensive stop. You expect an impressive score to be negated by the other coach's challenge. You're aware that you have a better chance of winning the lottery than seeing the Bengals drive for a touchdown in a game-changing situation. You can count on Shayne Graham missing a critical field goal if it's Steelers Week. And the list could go on and on.

Yep, something always goes wrong when the Bengals get their turn - every opportunity is a chance to fail rather than succeed. Poor Bengals fans - you know there's no chance of this changing. You are powerless to stop the bad karma. It's time to move on to some other, less taxing way to test our limited patience. Rooting for this team is too much like the old joke: "Why do you keep hitting yourself over the head with a hammer?" "Because it feels so good when I stop." All I know is, after enough of these Bengal Blows, my head now just hurts. Enough already - see you at the bar, watching the non-Bengals game on the big screen.

If you traded this team en masse to another franchise, it would be one of the 5 elite teams. Take one of the 5 elite teams, and let Mike Brown run them, and he would only need 6 months to "Bengalize" them and plunge them into mediocrity!

at 12/03/2007 1:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The solution is simple, really, and will never occur because that would entail the Brown family making sense in their judgements: Fire Marvin and Co--they have never been able to prepare the Benglas properly. More alarming, they have zero ability to make adjustments to the schemes of other teams at halftime. ZERO!

So fire Marvin, go with hat in hand to either Bill Parcells or preferably, Bill Cowher, and pay them whatever they want, give them whatever control they want to come here. Have Cowher bring Lebeau to run the defense. We are sick of 17 years of this crap.

"The Bengals stubbornly stayed with their pass-oriented offense"? As if their running game was doing so well? Let's run Rudi up the middle again, it hasn't worked the first four times it's bound to work now.

at 12/03/2007 1:57 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's time for Marvin to go. Say all you want about the players and the coordinators but they are a reflection of the system he runs. Chad Johnson running out of bounds, not knowing what down it was at the end of the game is typical as opposed to anomaly

Know the show Wife Swap? Well how about having a coach swap for one game???

Love to see how the Bengals would play under Belichik after a week of practice; conversely, it'd be equally interesting to watch the Patriots under Lewis.

watching the Bengals is like watching a stock you're losing money on. "it'll get better next year, it'll get better next year" it'll never get better. Just don't go to the games and don't buy merchandise.. Eventually this town will get it right but it'll be at least two years away when the Bengals finish 3-13 NEXT year.

I can't stand that guy who does the Bengals talk show after the games whateverhisname. "it's a great day to be a Bengal fan". that bozo is just as big of a problem as the coaching staff and media are. Keeps fans optomistic about a turn around in the Bengal franchise when the fans are only being fooled.. Mike Brown has NO interest in putting a winning football team on the field and people are in denial to realize it.

I used to be a drone like all the others who defend their right to pay money to watch the Bengals. Now I'm a former season ticket owner who saw the light. Until the culture changes from Mike Brown down, I will not pay money to support this franchise. One winning season in 17 years is an atrocity in the current NFL.

I've been a Bengals fan for 27 years, but the current culture is driving me away. It won't be long until I care more about my fantasy football team than my hometown team. Apathy is settling in.

"I am now totally indifferent to the team I've followed all my life. I just don't care about this group anymore."
My sentiments exactly, although I got there several years ago.

Nothing's going to change while the Brown family lawyers are owning/running the team. And they'll never give the gold mine they inherited.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over but expecting a different result" = Bengals season ticket holders.

RIP

Carson has been "Bengalized". Don't knock him, it happens to the best - sooner or later.
