0-6 when allowing 100-yard rusher

The Bengals are 0-6 when allowing an opposing running back to have a 100-yard game this season.

Game 2, 51-45 Browns, Jamal Lewis goes for 216 on the ground (one touchdown)
Game 3, 24-21 Seahawks, Shuan Alexander has 100 yards (no touchdowns)
Game 4, 34-13 New England, Sammy Morris has 117 (one touchdown)
Game 5, 27-20 Chiefs, Larry Johnson runs for 119 (one touchdown)
Game 7, 24-13 Steelers, Willie Parker runs for 126 (one touchdown)
Game 8, 33-21 Bills, Marshawn Lynch gets 153 (one touchdown)

Only in Game 1 vs. Baltimore (Willis McGahee, 77 yards) and Game 6 (Thomas Jones, 67 yards) did the Bengals hold the opposing featured back to fewer than 100 rushing yards. They won both games.

Bengals defenses are stinky for 40 years!

Mark,

It looks like the GM's that got Marvin the players at Baltimore (Newsome) and Washington sure helped him out a bunch. Marvin's current GM (himself) doesn't look like a very good talent evaluator.

The Bengals also have 0 playoff wins in 17 years, woohoo.

The stats don't matter anymore. The Bengals season is over. I give them a shot to win two more games this year; against the Rams and the Dolphins. My prediction is the Dolphins will be 0-15 going in to the final game. Their lone win will come against Cincinnati.

Bengals finish 3-13.

The Bengal's organization has succeeded once again in getting fans to believe this is going to be the year only to have it blow up in our face with lousy coaching, lousy talent, lousy scouting and one greedy owner with our money in his pockets...

Mark, what has been constant with this team? Um, the Defensive Line and um, the Defensive Coordinator and uh, the OWNER of this horrid team. Who needs to be FIRED? Um, BrezDUHan, but Mike Brown and ML are CLUELESS! Enjoy the Circus because ML said so, ML is the Ring Leader. LOL Mike Brown Step Down you old COOT!

How can the Bengals continue to be so bad year after year? I do not see any other team with so few people around the ball defensively game after game. I tune in week after week hoping for better while knowing deep down that I will see a similar version of the week before.

And they are 7-14 in their last 21 games. And they have 1 winning season in the last 16-17 years.

Why do we continue to beat ourselves over the head over the Bengals - week after week, year after year?

It's futile.

It cracks me up to listen to the Bengals post game shows every week. They have been analyzed to death for the last 17 years.

It makes no difference as long as Mike Brown is in charge. He simply just does not know what he is doing.

MARK ---- I GIVE UP. I GIVE UP. I GIVE UP I GIVE UP. Every weekend i dedicate 4 hours to the Bengals and every week they lose --(except twice) NEWS FLASH -- Rudi can no longer run. DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to lose the rest of our games so we can get a high draft pick...who won't sign in time and when he does...he will have a career ending injury.
PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS....ITS A BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD DAY TO BE A BENGAL.:(

And we still have the same defensive coaching staff intact.

They must all work for the government (cant be fired, tenure rules apply).

Let me begin my post by admitting that I'm a transplant to SW Ohio, and I'm first and foremost a Green Bay Packers fan. So, I didn't live through the horrible 1990s with the Bengals, although as a football fan, I was certainly aware of them.

With that said, I can honestly say that I have never seen fans as negative about their teams as Cincinnati sports fans are. I grew up in WI when the Packers were the dregs of the NFL. After joining the military, I lived in TX, MD, and CA (twice), as well as overseas. I'm admittedly not in a position to judge whether the attitude is deserved or not, but in all of the places I've lived, I've seen some pretty terrible teams in all sports, and listened to fans of virtually every team. But I have NEVER seen anything like this. Never. And for someone on a previous blog post to call Chad Johnson a "baby" after the hit yesterday was arguably the lowest and most disgusting thing I've ever read in a blog.

People keep saying on here that Mike Brown and the Bengals as an organization no longer deserve their support. I think a case could also be made about whether or not some fans in Cincinnati deserve professional sports.

Time to wake up, people.... there is no mystery problem here, nothing to dissect, figure out or analyze. This team is what it is and always will be. What you see is what you will always get. Do the "lost years" mean anything to anyone? Even if Mike Brown et al were to go away the vibe is so ingrained here that this joke of a team will always be as it is now. The franchise needs to be dis-enfranchised. Shoulda held the door open for them when Mike wanted to take the team to Baltimore. Season ticket holder=sucker. Sorry 'bout your luck. Maybe next year you'll save your $$$ and spend it on something that matters.

Mark, These losses are mostly our offense to blame. Look at how long the Bills controlled the clock. That allowed Lynch to have so many carries. He didn't break that back breaking run to well after 25 carries. This is the main difference from now and 2005. Back then we picked up first downs and didnt leave our defense out to dry on the field all day. Poor running plays and not executing on 3rd down is why Bratkowski will not be here next year.

Chad didn't want to get it because he didn't want to face the media. One winning season in 17 years doesn't mean you have talent! It means you had one fluke of a winning season over 2 years ago!

Worst defense in Bengals history. Period. Would anyone really dispute that statement (and yes, I have been a fan all through the darkest years)?
This is worse than the Rod Jones/Rodger Jones/Big Daddy/James Francis defenses.

How does a Marvin Lewis-led defense get consistently worse under his watch? 3 possible answers: 1. He's a fraud, 2. He's blind to Bresnahan's ineptitude, or 3. Katie and Troy are meddling big time.

I hope it's number 2.

at 11/05/2007 10:39 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I noticed something was wrong with the offense last year when all they had to do was win one of three games. They were flat, didn't know how to score anymore and that has carried over. I mentioned this to my better half and of course being the optimist disagreed. Don't worry about the offense, they can't be stopped. Guess what folks, they can be stopped but our defense can't stop anyone. Pitiful, embarrasing, bungling bungles.

What happened to this team? I don't doubt for a second that they could go 6-2 in the second half, but would that be a good thing? At this point I would almost rather see the running game stay off track and the defense continue to look like they have no idea what they are doing, at least then we'll have a high pick to use on a D-Lineman(Glenn Dorsey? We'd have to lose a lot though)in the first round and then a high second rounder to use on a RB. But with Carson, Chad, and TJ, this team is never far from a 6 game winning streak, all they need is not terrible performances from the running game and defense.

I was a season ticket holder for over 20 years. Gave them up the year before Marvin. Couldn't take it any more!

Marvin peaked my interest and at times I regretted my decision...but it always comes back to the same question....do you want to pay for an inferior product??? More people should be asking themselves that question.

My 2 cents: As long as the policy of cronyism and nepotism holds sway in the front office, this will be a losing franchise. Having the last name of Brown does not imbue you with any special football knowledge. The margin of error between teams and talent in the NFL is relatively narrow. The Bengals aren't willing to push the envelope in scouting and personel to get the team an edge. The recalcitrant attitude toward building an indoor practice facility when even the freaking Dolphins in Florida have one speaks volumes as to the priorities of this franchise.

at 11/05/2007 11:19 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

After 4+ seasons, it is apparent that Marvin Lewis is not ready to be a NFL head coach. His teams are ill-prepared, undisciplined, and lacking any spark or desire. Why do the Bengals continue to stick with someone who cannot lead a NFL team and why is it that words such as Marvin must go are deemed to be sacrilege? Look at the record. As of today he has 37 wins and 36 losses. Are we to be content with this mediocrity forever? And, what happened to the explosive offense and exhuberent defense that was aggressive and thrived on takeaways? Although Marvin seems like a very nice person, his time as a NFL coach much end!

I wouldn't say the Bungles BEAT the Jets...or the Ravens, for that matter. It was more or less they "barely avoided losing". I mean, come on, NY is 1-7. I wouldn't be too proud of beating them but having lost to almost everyone else.

Mark, how does Chuck B still have a job? He should have been canned after the Browns game. I am making a committment to discontinue watching this team until they win again. The defense is absolutely painful to watch. I also refuse to buy Sunday Ticket for next year unless some serious changes happen during the offseason. All Bengals fans should do the same. Hit Mike Brown in the pocket book and maybe it will wake him up to his ignorance.

Hey Greenbay guy, You don't like us, go back to freaking Greenbay. We are venting because we are frustrated. Frustrated because we have been supporting a losing team for 17 years. We are trying to incite change by speaking out and hoping that our pleas are not falling on deaf ears. Obviously when you have one of the premiere quarterbacks in the league and two pro-bowl recievers and you are 2-6 some issues need to be addressed. You have a lot of nerve coming on here announcing your loyalty to Greenbay and then dishing out critcism on how we should support OUR team. Go back to Greenbay or put on the Black and Orange.

Yes, Cincinnati fans are awful fans because the last time a team won a playoff game was in 1990. All we want is a winner, two pro sports teams and no playoff achievements since 1990? Yes, we are awful fans. No super bowls championships ever for the Bengals, and anyone under the age of 23 can't remember the Reds world series victory. Awful fans, just awful.

Dan .. I am not an awful fan. I love this team and have loved them since 1974. I will stick by them and again say "maybe next year." No matter how frustrated I get or how embarrased I get, I will always stick by this team.

I love the guys on this blog that come and act like WE the fans are the problem. Sure guys, it's the fans of Cincinnati that caused our football team to be so inept. Especially the GB fan who was in the military who just relocated here and doesn't understand the anguish and all the negativity. Guess what guys - to whom much is given - much is expected, ie tax money. Do some research before you come on this site and blame the fans for being as negative as they are. I mean really, walk in our shoes for a couple of decades before you rant on this site about how little you really know about this situation. Oh, and Mike Browns little interview in the Enquirer yesterday? If you didn't think he was out of touch before you read it, certainly you should now. Who talks like that anymore? He is a dinosaur. His answer to the second questions says it all. What were your expectations for this year? To get to the playoffs. Nope, sorry, the answer SHOULD be: TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. The fact the he says he is just happy to make the playoffs shows you where their minds (and their money) are. Fleecing of a city is what this is, no more, no less. Boycott this product.

What is the on constant in the last 20 years besides losing seasons? Coaches? Players? No, its Mike Brown, Mike Brown, Mike Brown!
We have a severe management problem, the same problems that send otherwise good companys into bankruptcy. If you go four or five years with losing seasons, you might have a player/coach problem... You go 20,, you have a management problem.
Since Brown owns all the stock,,, we are screwed until he is gone.
It's a damn shame!

I am a transplant to Buffalo from Cincinnati. I attended the game yesterday afternoon -- don't know how it looked on TV, but watching it live was awful! The Bengals demonstrated ineptneess on defense that is indescribable. To make JP Losman look like the next coming of Tom Brady takes some doing (the only reason he started is that Trent Edwards, a rookie, was injured the prior week). In the first seven games of the year, the Bills only scored three offensive touchdowns. Truly dreadful to watch!

As for the poster who said the offense is to blame, you've got to be kidding. One thing that was obvious is that Rudi just does'nt have power and speed like he did. Carson needs help in the backfield.

I was alarmed to find that I was not upset by the Bengals loss yesterday. I realized that I had somehow slipped back into the complacency of the "lost decade" where I watched what games I could (no sell-outs), but was never that upset when the Bengals lost because it was expected. I never thought I would feel this way in the Marvin era after his hiring. We've come full-circle

Im not trying to be political, but I had this idea and had to post it:
Mike Brown's comments compared to another guy's (W) delusions:
MB: Marvin Lewis's job is secure, and I am happy with it.
GWB: Brownie (head of FEMA), you're doin a heck of a job

MB: Who's that guy from Pittsburgh, No. 86, Hines Ward? He's our Ward.
GWB: "Jessica Simpson is here with us, which means we've finally introduced reality TV to the Lincoln Theater."

MB: To date, the season has been a disappointment. We are only at the halfway mark, and there's lots of time left, time enough to change it around, and I think we will.
GWB: (on the flight deck of a carrier) Mission Accomplished

MB: Our GM is a three headed monster, Katie, Troy and me.
GWB: Cheney, Bush, and Rumsfeld.

Sorry to get political, I actually am not a dem or a rep, but thought the similarities in denial and delusion were strikingly similar. There are lots more but I have a life!

The deficiencies of the total defense are well known. However a serious and major problem with this team is the OFFENSIVE LINE. A couple of years ago the o-line was on a par with the best in the league. Now Willie, a pro bowl tackle, is injured and probably at the end of his career as a starting tackle. Levi has bad knees and is now just an adequate rather than a superior left tackle. Rich Brahm, an outstanding center, is gone as is Steinbach an outstanding athletic left guard especially adept at pulling to support the running game. Even Adrian Peterson would have problems running behind this line. This present line cannot protect Palmer as well as previous lines have. This means more hurried throws resulting in more interceptions and fewer completions especially down field. Perhaps the biggest problem with this is the inability of the offense to keep a truly wretched defense off the field. I take issue with those who say that more scouts would do more than help around the edges. With the combine it is rare that a player goes unnoticed. Where the Bengals have failed is in the evaluation of available talent. The ultimate responsibility for this has to fall on Marvin. Would a good GM help? Absolutely. Would improved coaching help? Absolutely. It is disconcerting that Jonathon Joseph seems to have regressed this year. The best thing that could happen this year would be for the team to lose the rest of their games and get some high draft choices to start rebuilding. Of course this assumes someone capable of evaluating talent.

If you're a ND-arrogance hater and don't care about the Bengals anymore, it's really a lot of fun!!

Can we trade Marvin for "Little Tuna"?

Dear Bengals,

Outsource a job to me and save BIG! Why pay more? For League Minimum I will:

1. Drop 3-down passes
2. Not go beyond "the sticks" on 3-down
3. Miss tackles
4. Miss blocks
5. Blow coverage
6. Allow receivers behind me
7. Make stupid penalties
8. Not attempt to hide the fact that I am handing off

and most importantly (because it appears to happen over 80% of the time):
9. Call a running play on 2nd and
10 to set up 3rd and long

Question: Does Carson/Bob Bratkowski know the NFL allows teams to throw on 2nd down if the 1st down pass is incomplete?

WHY does Chad need/do to have IV's almost every game, not very commmon.....What drug is he using that drains him of fluids????

Hey GB transplant, you've never seen fans act like Bengal fans because there has never been a more incompetent franchise. Marvin Lewis has far less talent than he thinks he has (both on the field and between his ears) and Mike Brown is an utter joke--he knows nothing but acts as if he's, well, Paul Brown...genes don't always get switched on/inherited.

I'm sick of arrogant idiots complaing about Bengal fan attitudes or behavior. We're not the problem. Mike Brown is. And if Mike Brown and the Blackburns and Lewis were in Green Bay (or NY or anywhere else) there would have been a revolt and a far bigger hue and cry alot sooner. If anything, we've been extraordinarily optimistic and patient, especially with ownership.

Cincinnati fans in general have been shoveled horrible product by the Reds and Bengals year in and year out and apparently excuse makers for both teams abound. Local ownership bumbles along, full of excuses, empty promises, bald arrogance, and professional actions that amount to malpractice (like hiring not the best possible manager but rushing to hire a mediocre steroid-assisted skipper when it would have cost nothing to wait).

Lewis, get the hell out of Cincinnati you cancer. Whatever tore up your ankle obviously affected your brain--you've acted loopy and delusional this year to an extent never before seen. This year, you've shown a lack of a grasp of many more things, other than your usual inability to manage the clock during the game.

It's incredible. This whole Bengals year, from the "who were those guys first half against the Ravens?" to the "thank you for the gift 4th quarter vs. the Jets" and all the losing Bengal football and losing Bengal attitude and losing Bengal excuse-making (oh we just don't make enough plays or oh we have injuries) and losing Bengal management....

It's DISGUSTING.

Clearly, from the lowliest assistant coach to the dingbat in the bowler, everyone is incompetent in this organization.

And yet the fans show up! And yet we care enough to complain.

When the complaints dry up...it will be too late for this awful franchise.

A new owner is the only hope for us tortured Bengal fans. Until then, it's the gulag Bengalapeligo

Mark - we've all wrung our hands over the Bengals 'til we're blue in the face, and we all know it's an exercise in futility as long as Brown is the owner. But at this point, the only interesting question for me is, how did they manage to have that one winning season in the last 17 years? Was it an accident? - John in Union Twp.

If they bring this defensive staff back next year, it is the sign of "old Bengals". I'm just sick of watching a crappy defense every weekend. It was ok when the "O" was rolling up the scoreboard, but now that's a struggle too. Please, find a D-tackle, and a MLB that can be in there and play. Missed assignments, missed tackles...it's same schtuff, different season. Bring on college basketball!
