Lewis `defensive'

Head coach Marvin Lewis was no more forthcoming about the condition and play of his defense Monday than he was Sunday in the post-game at Cleveland, where the Browns scored 51 points.
Lewis said he did take the defensive debacle does bother him. "Yes, I do take it personally."

He said he would not answer the question if he was going to take over control of calling defensive signals from coordinator Chuck Bresnahan, similar to what Lewis did in a 2004 game at Cleveland with then-coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Frazier is now coordinator in Minnesota, where the Vikings defense is ranked 20th overall, eighth against the run and 25th against the pass after two games.

The Bengals are ranked 30th in total defense, 28th against the run and tied for 27th in pass defense.

The Bengals are 29th in points allowed per game with an average of 35.5.

The Bengals are last in yards allowed per rush at 6.1.

How's your back feeling, Mark?

If he will not be publically accountable for this privately held enterprise that represents a city it is evidence of a lousy, ineffective leader. That is why this team promises and does not deliver. It's a game of slow death; we Bengal fans say: been there done that. Brown will be too slow to pull the string again.

When does the new season of 24 start? We could use something to distract us and enjoy.

Why do you Bengals writers allow Marvin Lewis to treat you like crap during press conferences? When someone tells me I'm too stupid to understand an explanation, I take that as an insult. You should too.

5:30 anon is absolutely right. "Melvin Lewis" insults your intelligence and you kiss his ass.

I agree about the media and how Marvin talks to you. Stick up for the fans and tell it like it is! Make ML blow up or something, show some emotion ML, besides your smile, laugh and no comment attitude. ML needs to answer about why Frazier was FIRED so soon and Bresnahan is still around for how many years now! Sounds like to me, Bresnahan's D Schemes are ML's schemes and they are just plain Horrible, but he does not want to admit it.

It is well past time for the media members to stick it to Marvin, and call him out at these press conferences. I, for one, have had enough!!

Bengals' defense is offensive !
Coach Lewis needs to step up and fix the problem, and stop the bleeding before the season becomes a struggle for 8-8.

I dont see what you people are whining about. The Patriot's coach does the same damn thing and his fans adore him. Informed fans don't make a winning team. If you were really into the game you could read between the lines and know exactly whats going on without tipping our cards to our competitors. Shut up and press on. Did ML blow coverages.... no Did ML get pushed around on the line by Kellen Winslow... no, that was Justin Smith... A lot of things can be coached but some of the foul ups were basic football knowledge. You are a pro and don't know how to bring down a running back, come on. I could of tackled Jamal Lewis or went lower than Dexter Jackson did to get it done.

Mark, Marvin called you, the fans, and the rest of the media idiots and you are okay with that. I wish a beat writer would have the guts to call Marvin out. For years Marvin has been so condescending to you and the rest of the media and you all just take it. Why give someone respect that doesn't give it to you.

Hey Mark,

Marvin Lewis does not have any respect for you or your job, yet you, and other beat writers continure to treat him like a God during those press confrences. I wish we had Marty, Thom or the cowboy as beat writers for the Bengals. Could you imagine Pete Mackanin telling Marty, I won't try to explain it to you because you are too dumb to understand. If he was anything like the Bengals beat writers he would have said, "Okay sir, your right"

I know I'm in the minority, but what exactly do you want him to say? It's obvious what & why the problems are. Calling players/coaches out to the media lacks class and may back fire with them shutting down on you. The talent we have is thin/young. Who are we going to bring in? Who are we going to trade? We lost a lot in the off season due to $$$. That's not in Marvin's control. Do you honestly expect him to call out ownership? He has what he has, & he has to do it better with them. Which is also pretty much what he said in the press conference.

"The Patriot's coach does the same damn thing and his fans adore him"

When Marvin Lewis brings 3 super-bowl championships to the city of Cincinnati he can pee on my tires for all I care. Until then how about showing fans some respect.

"Mark, Marvin called you, the fans, and the rest of the media idiots and you are okay with that."

Guess what..... the fans and the media ARE idiots. Instead of talking about what happened Sunday, all the talk is about Marvin hurting Chick's feelings.

I for one am still waiting to see the "defensive specialist" that Marvin was touted as being before he took over the Bengals. In his short tenure, the Bengal defense has repeatedly been one of the worst in football. I understand that the organization did not go out of its way to sign any major help defensively this year, but how hard is it to blitz the hell out of a quarterback with 2 NFL starts under his belt. The Steelers did just that and beat Cleveland soundly. Breshnahan or whoever else is responsible for the continued lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks should be fired. Every other NFL team seems to find a way to get to the quarterback...why can't the Bengals?

It will be truly sad, when our pro-bowl laden offense reaches the end of their collective careers and never once had a team with a defense to support them in a run to the playoffs. It will be very sad for this great offense and us fans too. - MB

Hey ANON 7:59 The media tried to talk about the loss Sunday. When Marvin was asked what happened to the defense and what will be done to fix it he said he that he isn't going to explain it because the media (and essentially fans) wouldn’t understand. Why don't you get your facts striate before you call everyone (including yourself assuming you’re not a Bengal coach)idiots.

Chick didn't ask Marvin what happened. You don't "ask" someone what happend by stating "we've heard this song and dance before". You make that statement to provoke a response.

By Chick's own admission he admitted that the controversy around this meant "I did my job".

It's all about readers, ratings, and revenue.

Now...... who is the idiot?

Holy @#$% !!!....

I'm starting to sound like Darryl Parks !!

i love it when the white media gets all up in arms over the comments of Marvin lewis. i guess it is hard to be talk to in an intelligent way by a black guy that is smarter than you are. But we love the hell out of Josh hamilton and ryan freel. Go figure

ANON 11:18

Let me put this in idiot terms so you get it. Here is what "we've heard this song and dance before" means. Every time the defense sucks (almost every week) Marvin gives the same vanilla response but yet the very next week the defense makes the same mistakes. Thus Marvin,, his coaches and his players are not fixing any of their mistakes. He called Marvin out on it. Every week your defense sucks and every week you say the same thing. That is the very definition of insanity.

And to answer your question.....still you.

Classic response...... Someone challenges your thought process, so you call names.

Can't wait to hear your next phone call to Lewis, Doyel, or McAlister.

Bresnahan: "Until we play with a level of consistency on this defensive unit, we’re going to continue to be very, very average".

Problem number 1: Bresnahan doesn't seem to have a grip on the English language. Please tell me what is "average" about giving up more than 500 yards and 51 points. That's not an average defensive performance; it's a horrible, embarrasing display of player and coaching incompetence. Average would be 21-28 points. Not good, but that would probably get Air Coryell..I mean the Bengals in the playoffs. Fire Bresnahan!!! If Lewis won't do it, fire Lewis!!!

Its about time something like this came up and blew up in the Bengals faces. For too long now the Bengals have needed to fire Bresnehan for three years now and maybe because of the Browns game they will. He has no idea of what he is doing with his defense and we should find someone who does. or at least stop calling for a zone defense where the lineman comes out to cover a reciever. THEY AREN'T QUICK ENOUGH!!!! Get rid of Chuck.
