Willie Anderson has `procedure'

Right tackle Willie Anderson, who had not been seen for the last week at training camp in Georgetown, Ky., said this morning that he had a "procedure" in Atlanta in his right foot.

He has a protective walking boot on his right foot and lower leg.

"It's something I did last year and kept playing with it, but I found out it was something new that came out," he said. "By not knowing what it was, I'm afraid I've done further damage to it during the offseason."

Anderson would not say whether he would be ready for the opener Sept. 10.

"But it is a major concern," said Anderson, who has started 112 consecutive games. "Either this procedure works or it's bad news."

Coach Marvin Lewis said Anderson "was doing fine."

The Saints and Bengals have now done joint work.

The Bengals pass offense, quarterbacks and wide receivers, worked against New Orleans safeties and cornerbacks.

The Bengals run game offense, running backs and offensive line, ran plays against the New Orleans front seven.

On Field 2, the team roles were reversed.

There is no live tackling, though the contact is pronounced.

Bengals wide receiver Bennie Brazell beat Saints cornerback Fred Thomas on a deep pass play down the sideline and was, accidentally, tackled. Brazell came up limping but shook off the pain to run another route a few minutes later.

I am tired of the Bengals, or Marvin Lewis, or whoever in that bunch keeps all this stuff under wraps and just toys with the media. Like Willie Anderson. All of a sudden he shows up in a brace. Why could it not be told in the beginning that it is serious and here is the deal.

Any Kaesviharn interceptions? I think the Bengals are going to miss his nose for the ball in red zone situations this season.

I don't remember hearing about joint team pratices before. Is this a normal thing in preseason, or something new? I'm in favor - it gives our guys someone maybe less predictable to work against, compared to their own teammates whom they know pretty well.

Because if you're planning a game against the Ravens, you don't want the Ravens to know that your best left tackle might be injured come game time.

Its simple really...they keep things like this under wraps to make sure people still buy there season tickets. They don't want to cast any shadows on the upcoming season. This is exacting what they did when Rich Braham injured his leg and I am sure they will continue to do it in the future. Am I sick of it? Of course I am! But there is no doubt I am still buying my tickets!

Marvin Lewis and the Bengals Organization have already embarassed their fans through the police blotter. The least that they could do is be transparent in their injury reports. Don't they owe at least that much to their loyal fans?

I'm with the idea of keeping such things as disclosed as possible, more so during the regular season. Imagine this: we're playing the patriots and marvin tells the media that willie anderson will definitely be out. bill bellichek then has a full week to devise a gameplan that will no doubt be focused on taking advantage of their best lineman being missing. if he doesn't learn until gameday, they'll have less time to devise plays to take advantage. it gives us a little competitive advantage. oh, and belicheck and many other coaches do the same thing.

Ben has an interesting if un-informed opinion, especially for someone who claims to buy tickets.
To review season tickets are committed to in Feb w/ the following seasons deposit. So how does Willie's procedure last week
being kept quiet fool people into buying season tickets?

Guys, lay off Marvin for not telegraphing every little detail. Or is this the crowd who expects the Army to tell CNN attack plans ahead of time so they can get good camera position or alert the enemy? What I am more upset about is that this is not the first time the team training staff has screwed up a diagonosis and then we find out at the start of the season. Hire a freaking decent MD.

There's a pretty good coach in New England who says nothing but "questionable" on his injury reports.

I agree, Marvin doesn't need to tell us the detailed health status of every player three weeks before the opener. I think it was pretty well known that his foot was the issue. I'm sure Marvin still plans on having Willie in the lineup on Sept. 10. However the pattern of mis-diagnosis that is happening is very concerning. The same thing happened with Chris Perry & Levi.

Mark, any update on why TJ has missed the last couple of days of practice.

Why are so many fans of Cincinnati sport teams so retarded?

Are you kidding me, whining about not know who is injured and the extent of the injury!!!

I mean next I will read on here whining about how season ticket holders and fans deserve to know what hotel the Bengals stay at on the road and how we deserve to know what exactly is served to the team for food before the game...How stupid...

Of course in the real world maybe you failed to notice that EVERY SINGLE TEAM IN THE NFL hides injuries and LIES OUT THEIR TEETH about the severity of injuries. I guess you have missed that Mike Shanahan of the Broncos has been fined by the NFL time and time again for failing to disclose injuries and lying about the severity of injuries. (of course he is not the only one who has ever been fined, he is just the only one I can recall off the top of my head)

Face it, in the NFL a coach is going to take ANY and EVERY avenue out there to gain an upperhand on their opponents, and that includes hiding injuries so that the opponent can't gameplan based on the Bengals missing a starter. Or maybe you don't think that the Bengals opponent would never take advantage of a backup playing on the offensive line ESPECIALLY at tackle...

My goodness people this is about WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES, and THAT is what will make the fans happy. Fans deserve NOTHING MORE than a team that does anything and everything in their power to WIN FOOTBALL GAMES, and hiding or misreporting injuries is something that can and does make a difference. Open your eyes fellow Bengals fans and start living in the real world...

In response to the guy asking if this is a normal thing it is for other teams. It's the first time the Bengals have ever done it. I'm pretty sure the Eagles and Steelers practice together and so do the Ravens and Redskins. It is good for the guys to practice against somebody different now and then.
And for the guy saying they don't want to discourage the fans from buying season ticket you need to get the fact straight. Season tickets are all sold out. I'm sure that has nothing to do with anything.

Mark,

Please write an article that is exclusively about the misdiagnosis that has been made by the Bengals Medical Staff that has cost players significant time. Your article today talked about it at the end. I know another example is with Caleb Miller's anklle that they didn't identify properly. As a fan I am angered and really feel like they need to do some house cleaning with their medical people. Please seriously consider looking into this as a major article. Thank you.
