Lewis: No Dillon

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis this morning, when asked if he had any interest in re-signing running back Corey Dillon, said: "It's not anything I've really thought about. Corey had a fine career here. He finished it up with a fine career in New England."

Dillon remains out of a job after asking for and receiving his release from the Patriots in the offseason.

Lewis and the Bengals traded Dillon to the Patriots in March 2004, a trade that yielded a second-round draft pick, which the Bengals used to select starting free safety Madieu Williams.

The Bengals are dealing with the season-ending loss of rookie running back Kenny Irons to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He was supposed to provide depth and outside speed behind starter Rudi Johnson.

My take is that bringing Dillon back would be a mistake. He would hurt the team-first chemistry that has developed further each year since his departure. Besides, there are no clear indications that Dillon wants to play again after completing his 10th season.

In other news this morning, the Bengals stopped practice about 40 minutes sooner than scheduled. Defensive and offensive linemen were excused first.

Quarterback Carson Palmer was not seen on the practice field; it might have been another of his scheduled workout periods with strength coaches.

The Bengals will practice tonight at 7.

Lewis also said that he anticipates that backup quarterback Doug Johnson will play fewer snaps Saturday night in the second preseason game against the Saints. Palmer might play a third series.

Lewis is pleased with the work of punt return specialist Skyler Green but said Green needs to improve more on kickoff returns.

A handful of players who missed the Detroit game last week could be ready for the Saints: safety John Busing, wide receiver Tab Perry, offensive lineman Adam Kieft, linebacker Earl Everett, cornerback Johnathan Joseph and wide receiver Antonio Chatman.

Perry, the team's top kickoff return man, will not return kickoffs against the Saints but will return to the preseason rotation afterward, Lewis said. Perry also will get a turn returning punts.

I agree Mark, no Dillon. We need to find someone who is quick enough to get to the outside and has the ability to take the ball on 1st and 2nd down if Rudi can't go for some reason. Right now from the reviews of the other guys in camp we do not have that guy.

Is there any sign that we are seeking a trade or does it look like they will be waiting for 1st cuts?

Thanks for your opinion on the blog.

why would we want dillion anyways? i know personally as a fan i would boo him almost as much as i would bonds, dillion is a virus and why would anyone in the bengals organization think about bringing him back? not to mention the fact that he isn't even the type of back that we would be interested in we would be looking for a fast, outside runner, who won't ruin the locker room. not to mention that dillion is way too old to be effective and do you want to pay that salary?? i don't, and whoever the reporter was that asked that question is an idoit and should be taken off covering the bengals. I could, without any training as a reporter, have come up with a better question that that, and i'm surprised marvin didn't laugh in his face. WHODEY

I don't realy understand why they would even consider Dillon. The whole idea of Irons (and Chris Perry) was a change-of-pace to Rudi, a speedy/shifty back. Dillon is the same type of back as Rudi, a bruiser.

Plus, the risk -- chemistry, negativity, and WAY too much institutional memory on Dillon's side -- far outweighs the positive.

chicago red: youre an idiot. the reporter asked the question because there are rumblings of dillon in cincinnati. the reporter has the duty of either confirming that the dillon rumors are true, or if they are in fact just rumors. thank god you aren't a reporter!

I have to agree but I do want to mention something. Because of the way Corey left people want to forget what he did give us. Several years of bruising running for really bad teams. In his prime he was one of the best running backs in the league. A bruiser, yes but he could also outrun anybody if given a crease. Thanks Corey, you gave us a reason to watch Bengals football in the 90's, I am glad you got your ring and I glad you made it out before playing here put you in a wheelchair.

I think Dillon's negative affect on team chemistry is a bit overstated.

I agree he was not a very mature man in his time in Cincy, but I think all the losing is kind of what made him a cancer towards the end of the career. I think a lot of Bengals fans still really like Corey Dillon.

That being said! Yeah I don't understand why they'd want Dillon as a player. He's basically the opposite of what they need and were hoping for in Chris Perry and Kenny Irons.

The sports talk media was bored I think and just wanted to bring up Corey Dillon.

Speaking of Chris Perry, what is his status?

Perry can come off the PUP list after game 5. Until then, we either pick up a good scat back (if there is one to be had) or go with RUDI>>>>RUDI>>>>RUDI>>>

Tell Dillon he can come back and play as soon as he goes back into the stands and gets hs helet and pads he lost.

Irons was suppose to bring speed to the outside. Yes Dillion can do that. But Dillion will have to know that his role is just that not starting running back. He can reprove him self then yes we can welcome him back. But if he can't handle that then he can keep on steppin.

Lance McCallister is such a rumor-mongering clown he should be ignored on every front. The guy knows nearly nothing about sports but instead makes a living with sensational angles to try and attract callers besides the usual 5 - 10 morons.

He slurps the folks that comes on his show, like all Miami coaches, and those that give autographs to his kids (real professional "Shotgun") yet is ridiculously critical of other folks without much reason.

This Corey Dillon thing is a perfect example. He makes no sense here but Lance was trying to ease his ratings over a 1.0 so he brought up a lightning rod person to stir the pot.

Nonsense.

we don't need cory dillion. how about trying Skylar Green at running back. He could be like Darren Sproles, formerly Kansas State star, now Charger running back.

anon 2:24 you're the idiot. Do you think reporters should ask about every moronic rumor that comes out of talk radio?

Ray Ray....good lord. Dillon can bring speed to the outside? Are you serious>
