Irons tears ACL, out for year

The Bengals confirmed early this afternoon that rookie running back Kenny Irons tore his left ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and is out for the entire 2007 season.

He will have surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, the Bengals said.

Irons injured his knee Thursday night in the preseason opener at Detroit. The Bengals lost the game, 27-26.

very unfortunate - so reminiscent of KiJana Carter episode it's eerie.

Surgery the way it is today - he will be fine. Could have used his skills - but hopefully he will recover on schedule.

Go Bengals!

Not shocking at all considering the recent trend of our top draft picks being hurt. Good luck to Irons in his recovery.

My question for Mark or anyone else, is why is Perry so far away from being ready? He broke his leg 8 months ago....never really heard of a break taking this long to heal. Any chance he could be back earlier than week 6? Can they remove him from the PUP list?

Ouch... At least the loss comes on the offensive side of the ball. Looking at last night, the defense couldn't afford to lose such a high draft pick.

Is Chris Perry going to be ready at any point this season?

Time to shine, Quincy Wilson!!!

Sorry to hear about the bad luck for Kenny Irons. Man, this is very reminiscent of KiJana ...

somebody's gonna have to step up and frankly i've never been very impressed with what willson or watson has done, hopefully brown will be given a chance to show was he can do. we should also think about dumping CP if he cannot play this year when hes off the PUP list, he flashed when he played but has had way to many injury issues since we drafted him. PLEASE CAN THE BENGALS GET A LIL LUCK GOING OUR WAY?!?!?!?

Sorry Kenny, this is football though. Who can the bengals pick up to fill his void because Watson isn't quick enough & Wilson just isn't good enough. Let's see if Marvin & the coaches can think outside the box on this one.

Can we finally start to admit Marvin is snake bit when it comes to draft picks and their ability to actually play in games? Chris Perry, Odell Thurman, David Pollack . . . teams don't survive long when their 1st and 2nd rounds picks don't see the field much. I'm not going to give marvin a ton of blame, but you have to admit his team has had NO luck when it comes to his 1st and 2nd round picks playing an entire season.

Marv and his staff cant even think inside the box. Irons was injury-prone in college and the no. 2 pick used on him was incredibly ill-advised.

Cant build a team in his era with draft picks alone. Free agency, trades, and using the waiver wire to pick up a decent guy here and there are all tools that must be utilized. Team desperately needs a GM who can evaluate personnel independently of the coaching staff.

No way this team wins more than 8 games.

BRING BACK COREY DILLON!!!!!!!!!

He's the answer, Bengals all-time leading rusher, what a great way to end his career. WELCOME HOME COREY!

Corey Dillon is sitting at home, knows the offense, and who knows maybe???

I am no NFL expert. It seems to me, though, that the disappointments of Chris Perry, the 2005 draft class, and Kenny Irons are going to add up at some point, if not now.

I bought a draft review magazine last spring and they noted that Kenny Irons was prone to injury (including his Junior and Senior years in college). I know the Bengals took a risk on Munoz after his multiple injuries but with their decision to replace a piece of china who is really surprised that a player noted for being fragile is another blackhole on the cap and in the trainers room.

He will play sparingly for two years after his rehab.

I think that thinking outside the box on this one may include one or more of the following picking up some of the slack: McNeal, Green, T. Perry, or Brazell.

We've got all these fast athletes, we should use them like backs and receivers both, who cares if they wear #'s in the 80's...well, most of them don't anyway.

I would love to see more Reggie McNeal. He came in last year for a few plays at QB and played very well, if only b/c of the different look. Why don't we use that more often?

Kenny Irons is the MAN!!!! He will make it back after this season and be even more of a treat. Look out NFL! Keeny Irons for President!

Bring back Dillon!

Oh, c'mon...one injury does not a season make! I feel sorry for Kenny Irons, not the Bengals.

The only fragility here is the Bengals' psyche. They have plenty of guys who can take them to the playoffs or Super Bowl physically. Marvin must ensure they get their act together mentally.

It's a passionate game -- or should be -- and I can't wait for the regular season to begin. WHO DEY!

1) I hate these easy to use comment beta's because so many unintelligent posters leave mind numbing messages.

2) Mark,

Why don't you ever leave your thoughts on the stuff you report? This isn't the Enquirer (unless they are forcing you to stay completely objective because it's on the Enquirer site), it's a blog and an opinion would be wonderful. I for one would love to know what you think the effect of losing Irons for the entire season will have on the Bengals offense and more specifically Rudi Johnson.

Mark rarely shares his thoughts and I get the feeling he does not feel its the duty of a beat writer. However, he is with the team and his insight would be nice on the blog when a major storyline tales place.

Even John Fay shows a little personality every once and a while. No offense to either guy. By the way Labrandon Toefield is available with the Jags. They are loaded at RB and may have to release him. We should act now before he finds another home.

He is the type of guy that if something happened to Rudy we could withstand the blow. Watson is a nice 3rd down player but can't carry the load.

To Anonymous 7:44 a.m,,

You could not have said what you said any better! To all of you "Bandwagon (Doom and Gloom)" Bengals fans, quit complaining so much! It was the first preseason game of the new season for crying out loud!

It kind of makes you wonder is some of these posts belong to some of the Steeler fans? We all know this city is infested with so many of them here who want to see the Bengals have another losing season, just so they can continue to say "I told you so!" or call them the "Bungles".
